MESSAGE: FROM THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR'S DESK Dear Readers: Ellen White writes: In a knowledge of God all true knowledge and real development have their source.” She further states that the mind of man was designed to communicate with God which would lead to him more fully reflecting the Creator’s glory. Education, p. 14, 15. The Seventh-day Adventist philosophy of education is Christ-centred and points to the redemptive goal of true education, which is to restore human beings to the likeness of God. These principles of education have not changed. They have remained steadfast and unmovable. Therefore, the true purpose of Seventh-day Adventist education at the early childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary levels is to restore the image of God in our children and young people for temporal and eternal service. It should be noted that the Adventist philosophy facilitates the holistic development of all our students. This includes the development of all forms of literacy, inclusive of “digital literacy” (Kerkhoff, Paul, Spires, 2017, p. 2235). Therefore, it should not be surprising that our schools have sought to provide online and hybrid education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Department intends to continue its pursuit of this form of literacy through STEM, STEAM, robotics, and other initiatives in the near future. The booklet includes readings for Sabbath April 22nd or 29th, and other planned education and health emphasis programmes. The booklet includes a school directory and summary external examination reports. Seventh-day Adventist Schools seek to follow in the steps of our Master Teacher, Jesus Christ. He taught by precept and example as Son of Man and Master Teacher, while on earth, some 2,000 years ago. He continues to be the Son of Man and indeed our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary as He intercedes for us. Our Saviour, Lord is set to return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords in the very near future. Let us be ready for Him. Sincerely, Jessica Cunningham Jessica Cunningham Education Director South Caribbean Conference of SDA Page | 2

THEME SONG The Wonders of Redeeming Love 2 He gives Himself, His life, His all, A sinless sacrifice. For man He drains the cup of gall, For man the victim dies. 3 And now before His Father’s face His precious blood He pleads; For those who seek the throne of grace His love still intercedes. 4 He knows the frailties of our frame, For He has borne our grief; Our great High Priest once felt the same, And He can send relief. 5 His love will not be satisfied, Till He in glory sees The faithful ones for whom He died From sin forever free.1 1 Stanzas Two (2) to Five (5) is a Copy of Hymn Number 179 in the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal, Word Edition, South Caribbean Conference of SDA Page | 4
What You See Is Real: I Am A Product Of The Spirit When I was a boy back in the village of Mason Hall in Tobago, my dad bought an acre of land and planted a number of fruit trees on it. Every dry season my brothers and I had the task of wetting those fruit trees. I just knew that there were mango trees and citrus trees and some avocado trees. Years later as a young man I finally knew which trees were Julie mangoes, or starch mangoes and what were lemon or lime or oranges or Portugal trees. I was only able to identify them after they bore fruit. And the reality is that while there may be experts who can tell different kinds of trees just by looking at the plant, the vast majority of us will only be sure what type of trees we see only when they have fruit on them. Today we will focus on the topic – What you see is real: I am a product of the spirit. Fruit as defined by the Miriam-webster dictionary is noun, often attributive 1a : a product of plant growth (such as grain, vegetables, or cotton) the fruits of the field b(1) : the usually edible reproductive body of a seed plant especially : one having a sweet pulp associated with the seed the fruit of the tree (2) : a succulent (see SUCCULENT ENTRY 1 SENSE 1C) plant part (such as the petioles (see PETIOLE SENSE 1) of a rhubarb plant) used chiefly in a dessert or sweet course c : a dish, quantity, or diet of fruits live on fruit d : a product of fertilization (see FERTILIZATION SENSE B) in a plant with its modified envelopes or appendages specifically : the ripened ovary (see OVARY SENSE 2) of a seed plant and its contents e : the flavor or aroma of fresh fruit in mature wine The wine's fruit is rich in tangerine, apricot, and papaya flavors. 2 : OFFSPRING, PROGENY the fruit of the womb 3a : the state of bearing fruit a tree in fruit b : the effect or consequence of an action or operation : PRODUCT, RESULT the fruits of our labor the fruits of victory 4 slang, usually disparaging + offensive : a male homosexual Isn’t it interesting that even neutral words such as fruit have now taken on negative connotations. Let’s turn our bibles to the following passages Galatians 5:22,23 (NKJV) Page | 5
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [a]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Matthew 7:16-20 New International Version (NIV) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. I can ask the question, why is it important to identify the fruits we bear? The immediate answer that will come is simply this. The fruits we bear tell who we really are. You see I can look like a Julie mango tree all my life but the day the first starch mango is what I bear then I will be known as a starch mango tree. Or I can look like an orange tree all the time but as soon as a grapefruit is what comes out from my flower then I can no longer pretend to be an orange tree. The one advantage we as humans have over actual trees is this, there is the option for us to bear different fruits at different times. Training, education, and teaching allow us as humans the opportunity to be transformed, to be changed, to be renewed. This can be obtained through true education. A lifelong process that begins in the home and continues in the church and the school. Ellen White in the book Education says, “Such an education provides more than mental discipline; it provides more than physical training. It strengthens the character, so that truth and uprightness are not sacrificed to selfish desire or worldly ambition. It fortifies the mind against evil. Instead of some master passion becoming a power to destroy, every motive and desire are brought into conformity to the great principles of right. As the perfection of His character is dwelt upon, the mind is renewed, and the soul is re-created in the image of God. p. 18” As a church one of our fundamental beliefs teaches that the Holy Spirit is one part of the Three Persons who are God. Christ promised us the Holy Spirit as a gift when he was leaving earth. Do we recognize the potency of this offer that is freely available to all of us? The Holy Spirit inspires us, empowers us and guides our understanding. The Spirit touches our hearts and transforms us, renewing the image of God in which we were created. God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He is as much a person as are the Father and the Son. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ’s life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures leads it into all truth. (Gen. 1:1, 2; 2 Sam. 23:2; Ps. 51:11; Isa. 61:1; Luke 1:35; 4:18; John 14:16-18, 26; 15:26; 16:7-13; Acts 1:8; 5:3; 10:38; Rom. 5:5; 1 Cor. 12:7-11; 2 Cor. 3:18; 2 Peter 1:21.) Page | 6
Roy Adams in the Adventist review said the following: “Take, for example, the interesting parallel passages of Matthew 7:7-11 and Luke 11:9-13. In the Matthew passage Jesus says that God is more willing than our earthly parents to give us the “good things” we ask for. But in the parallel version in Luke, we learn that Jesus had in mind something infinitely more important than mere “things.” In Luke’s rendering Jesus says: “‘How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!’” (verse 13). Trying to resolve the apparent discrepancy one day (with one passage saying “things,” the other “the Holy Spirit”), I came upon a statement by Ellen G. White that seemed to bring it all together for me. Referring to the Holy Spirit, she says: “The power of God awaits [our] demand and reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other blessings in its train” (The Desire of Ages, p. 672). This means to me that though it’s right and proper to do so, I need not present a checklist to the Lord. I need not ask for victory over this, victory over that, and victory over a hundred other problems. I need not bemoan my lack of faith, my lack of wisdom, my impatience, and a thousand other deficiencies I know I have. Nor do I need to present Him a catalog of a hundred and one “things” I want. Instead, all I need to do is to ask for the mighty Third Person to come and take possession of me. Then that “promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other blessings in its train.” It’s what I call God’s “Package Deal.”” The thought that pervades my mind here is this: Since the Holy Spirit possess this transformative power and since He is available freely and since our fruits are an indication of who we really are, isn’t the logical thing to ask for the Holy Spirit to take control and possession of us. Adams continues, “Sometimes I think we don’t seriously agonize for this Presence in our lives because, frankly, we’re afraid of the Spirit. And we’re afraid because of what we’ve seen from some of those who loudly claim to “have the Spirit.” We think that the Spirit will lead us to do stupid things, to make fools of ourselves. But the Spirit never leads us to do things that are repugnant or stupid in the particular culture or setting in which we function. Quite the contrary, it’s the Spirit who often holds us back from doing many dumb things of which we are so prone. Indeed, this Gift is much more practical than we sometimes realize; and in this connection one might point to Exodus 35:30-33—to what I call “the secular activity” of the Holy Spirit. For here we find the Spirit providing abilities for design and construction, of all things! It suggests that whatever our calling or occupation, we can lean on the Spirit for the enablement we need. This is fantastic stuff, when you stop to think about it! Whether you’re a builder, a teacher, a nurse, a mechanic, a physician, a homemaker, a janitor, a student, or whatever, the presence of the Spirit increases your ability and competence. The Spirit does not make us better just for the sake of it. Rather, God would have us use the Spirit’s gifts to build up His kingdom.” Page | 7
Have We Become Self-sufficient? With all the technological gadgets and wonders we have today, it’s quite possible for many of us to feel no need of any help beyond ourselves. But God’s word through the ancient prophet is as true today as then: “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit’” (Zech. 4:6). The early disciples, recognizing their inability to accomplish anything lasting on their own, prayed “with intense earnestness for a fitness to meet [the people around them]” (The Acts of the Apostles, p. 37). And what followed was Pentecost! This is our greatest need as a church. And we have prophetic intimations that that need will be fulfilled before the end. “The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power of God than marked its opening…. By thousands of voices, all over the earth, the warning will be given. Miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed, and signs and wonders will follow the believers” (The Great Controversy, pp. 611, 612). Up Close and Personal The Spirit is, as well, the ultimate solution for all our maladies and problems. In the words of our Fundamental Beliefs, No. 5, “those who respond [to the Spirit] He renews and transforms into the image of God.” Guilt, anxiety, hostility, and a host of other problems melt in the presence of the mighty Third Person. He comes with overwhelming, quickening, recuperative, transforming power, falling like an electric shock on our palsy-stricken souls, causing every nerve, every fiber of our bodies to reverberate with new vitality and power. And all this quietly, imperceptibly. “No one sees the hand that lifts the burden, or beholds the light descend from the courts above. The blessing comes when by faith the soul surrenders itself to God. Then that power which no human eye can see creates a new being in the image of God” (The Desire of Ages, p. 173). As we read before in Galatians 5:22, 23 (NKJV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [a]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Do we live in a world lacking all these things? The answer is a resounding yes. Selfishness, sadness, war, impatience, wickedness, unfaithfulness, harshness, and lack of self-control are the order of the day. Homes no longer seem to be able to teach children the right values, and when anything negative happens these days with children we are quicker to blame the teachers and school than look to the home. Churches are even neglecting their responsibilities to uphold the moral and spiritual values on which they should be founded. We have the opportunity to ensure that as parents and as a church that also has schools under our control to repair this breech. Our families need to return to the values and principles we once held dear to us and ensure that the children we send out into society are well trained. Our schools need to remember that we were established as schools of the prophets and uphold those core values which make the difference. Page | 8
Teach our children right, prepare those minds for eternity as well as time, present our curriculum in a way that will transform the minds of the children and restore in them the image of God. Let our churches stand firm on the values and principles on which we were founded and always seek to point lives and minds to God. It is said that you can know when learning takes place because there is a change in behaviour. I think the time is here to ensure that our homes, schools, and churches are centres of learning. We can’t waste the opportunity to introduce our children and even adults to the Holy Spirit and let them see the great transformation that can take place once we allow Him to take full possession of us. How many of us today are willing to let the Holy Spirit be the one who influences the fruit we bear? BY: Mr. Leslie Hislop, Principal of CUC Secondary Page | 9
Strengthening Your Immune System Healthy ways to strengthen your immune system 1. Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables. 2. Exercise regularly. 3. Maintain a healthy weight. 4. Get adequate sleep. 5. Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly What foods build your immune system? Plan your meals to include these powerful immune system boosters. 1. Citrus fruits Most people turn to vitamin C after they've caught a cold. That’s because it helps build up your immune system. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are key to fighting infections. Popular citrus fruits include: grapefruit oranges tangerines lemons limes Because your body doesn't produce or store it, you need daily vitamin C for continued health. Almost all citrus fruits are high in vitamin C. With such a variety to choose from, it's easy to add a squeeze of this vitamin to any meal. 2. Red bell peppers If you think citrus fruits have the most vitamin C of any fruit or vegetable, think again. Ounce for ounce, red bell peppers contain twice as much vitamin C as citrus. They’re also a rich source of beta carotene. Besides boosting your immune system, vitamin C may help maintain healthy skin. Beta carotene helps keep your eyes and skin healthy. 3. Broccoli Broccoli is supercharged with vitamins and minerals. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as many other antioxidants and fiber, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables you can put on your table. The key to keeping its power intact is to cook it as little as possible — or better yet, not at all. Page | 10
4. Garlic Garlic is found in almost every cuisine in the world. It adds a little zing to food and it's a must- have for your health. Early civilizations recognized its value in fighting infections. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health Trusted Source, garlic may also help lower blood pressure and slow down hardening of the arteries. Garlic’s immune-boosting properties seem to come from a heavy concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin. 5. Ginger Ginger is another ingredient many turn to after getting sick. Ginger may help decrease inflammation, which can help reduce a sore throat and other inflammatory illnesses. Ginger may also help decrease nausea. While it's used in many sweet desserts, ginger packs some heat in the form of gingerol, a relative of capsaicin. Ginger may help decrease chronic pain and may possess cholesterol-lowering properties 6. Spinach Spinach made our list not just because it's rich in vitamin C. It's also packed with numerous antioxidants and beta carotene, which may increase the infection-fighting ability of our immune systems. Similar to broccoli, spinach is healthiest when it’s cooked as little as possible so that it retains its nutrients. However, light cooking enhances its vitamin A and allows other nutrients to be released from oxalic acid. 7. Yogurt Look for yogurts that have \"live and active cultures\" printed on the label, like Greek yogurt. These cultures may stimulate your immune system to help fight diseases. Try to get plain yogurts rather than the kinds that are preflavored and loaded with sugar. You can sweeten plain yogurt yourself with healthy fruits and a drizzle of honey instead. Yogurt can also be a great source of vitamin D, so try to select brands fortified with vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and is thought to boost our body’s natural defences against diseases. 8. Almonds When it comes to preventing and fighting off colds, vitamin E tends to take a backseat to vitamin C. However, vitamin E is key to a healthy immune system. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires the presence of fat to be absorbed properly. Nuts, such as almonds, are packed with the vitamin and also have healthy fats. A half-cup serving, which is about 46 whole, shelled almonds, provides nearly 100 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin E. 9. Turmeric You may know turmeric as a key ingredient in many curries. But this bright yellow, bitter spice has also been used for years as an anti-inflammatory in treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Also, researchTrusted Source shows that high concentrations of curcumin, which gives turmeric its distinctive color, can help decrease exercise-induced muscle damage. Page | 11
10. Papaya Papaya is another fruit loaded with vitamin C. You can find 224 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C in a single papaya. Papayas also have a digestive enzyme called papain that has anti-inflammatory effects. Papayas have decent amounts of potassium, B vitamins, and folate, all of which are beneficial to your overall health. 11. Kiwi Like papayas, kiwis are naturally full of a ton of essential nutrients, including folate, potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts white blood cells to fight infection, while kiwi’s other nutrients keep the rest of your body functioning properly. 12. Sunflower seeds Sunflower seeds are full of nutrients, including phosphorous, magnesium, and vitamin B-6. They’re also incredibly high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Vitamin E is important in regulating and maintaining immune system function. Other foods with high amounts of vitamin E include avocados and dark leafy greens. The old saying, “An apple a day can keep the doctor away,” may have truth behind it after all. Eating nourishing foods rich in certain vitamins can help your immune system fight off illness. Vitamin C is one of the biggest immune system boosters of all. In fact, a lack of vitamin C can even make you more prone to getting sick. Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, kale and broccoli. Daily intake of vitamin C is essential for good health because your body doesn’t produce or store it. The good news is that vitamin C is in so many foods that most people don’t need to take a vitamin C supplement unless a doctor advises it. Vitamin B6 is vital to supporting biochemical reactions in the immune system. Vitamin B6-rich foods include chicken and cold water fish such as salmon and tuna. Vitamin B6 also is found in green vegetables and in chickpeas, which is the main ingredient in hummus. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off infection. Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts, seeds and spinach. How to grocery shop to boost your immunity A simple rule can help you when choosing fruits and vegetables at the grocery store or farmers market: The more colorful the fruits and vegetables are, the better. Can supplements help your immunity? While vitamins and supplements can help fill in the gaps in your diet, the best way to load up on essential nutrients is to get them straight from food. Your body absorbs and uses vitamins and nutrients better when they come from a dietary source. When it’s a vitamin or supplement, it’s often questionable how much you’re actually getting Page | 12
Staying hydrated can boost your immune health too. Water helps your body produce lymph, which carries white blood cells and other immune system cells. Or try eating more hydrating foods, such as cucumbers, celery or watermelon. What is the best herb for your immune system? Herbs like, Echinacea, Elderberry, Andrographis and Astragalus can help reduce the duration and severity of illness. Anonymous Page | 13
NEWSTART Health N Eating healthy food keeps you strong. Everyday you should eat lots of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and seeds, the best foods to keep you strong and healthy. A balanced plant-based diet is the best form of nutrition. Snacks, even the healthy ones, should be avoided as they keep your stomach working when it needs to rest. E To keep your body healthy, you need to exercise every day. It is good to strengthen your muscles, lungs, heart and bones. Exercise helps to make you happy and keep you from becoming overweight. You need at least one (1) hour of exercise every day. W Strong, healthy bodies need lots of water as your blood is made up mostly of it. Your body also uses water for cleaning and cooling itself. Your body needs water for the inside as well as the outside. This will help rid your body of germs or toxins that can make you sick. S Sunshine is important to all life on earth. It kills germs, helps your body to fight infections and strengthen bones. Sun exposure also helps the red blood cells carry oxygen to the body and help make you feel happy; however, getting sunburned can put you at risk for getting skin cancer. T Temperance means to stay away from things that are bad for you and to use carefully things that are good for you. Some things that can hurt your body are: alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Too little or too much of any good thing is also not good for you. A Growing up strong is not possible without fresh air! Your brain cells start to die in just five minutes if you do not have air! The air we breathe contains oxygen. Each cell in your body needs oxygen to live. Your blood takes the oxygen from your lungs and carries it to all the cells of your body so they can do their jobs. Smoking makes the air you breathe bad. It hurts your lungs and keeps your blood from being able to take oxygen to your body like it needs to do. Even if you do not smoke, just breathing the air around someone who smokes can hurt you. R When you sleep, your body is resting, and it is able to renew its energy. Sleep also releases growth hormones which are needed to make you grow well. It is also important for success in school and to help you keep a good attitude and be happy. T Trusting in God is an important part of growing healthily. God made you. He knows all about you and your problems, and He has the answers for every one of them. God has promised to help us if we will trust Him. Trusting in God does not mean that He will take away all your problems but He has promised to be with you to help you and give you strength. JESUS’ MINISTRY WHILE ON EARTH SERMON: Jesus The Servant Leader THEME SONG #545: Savior Like A Shepherd TEXT: Matthew 9: 35-37 Jesus went through all the towns and villages. He taught in the synagogue. He preached the good news of the kingdom. And he healed every illness and sickness. When he saw the crowd, he felt deep concern for them. They were beaten down and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. Then Jesus said to his disciples, the harvest is plentiful. But there are only a few workers. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest field. Did you know that God has a special work for you to do? Yes. You see in the scripture verse that we just read, there were many people who were in need of different kinds of help in Jesus’ day. Some were in need of hearing the word of God, some were ill and needed to be healed, some were helpless and needed someone to help them to carry water, or go to the store to buy stuff for them. Some people did not even have the money to buy what they needed. Also some people needed help to do the right thing. So you can well imagine that Jesus had a lot of work to do, which meant that he was always busy and wasted no time being idle. While Jesus lived on earth He always looked out for all the people who were in need so that they would understand that he cared for them and that he wanted them to live a better quality of life. Whenever he saw them doing the wrong things or committing sin he would help them, then say to them go and do not continue to commit such sins again and follow God’s way. Did you know that God’s way is the best way to live? When we follow Jesus’ example we please God and our lives are happier. God loves us and He tells us what is best for us. That is why Jesus came to show us how we should live. Jesus wants us to live like He did - looking after the needs of others. Well you see boys and girls, we were all created by God. A God who loves us so much he never forces us to do anything that we do not want to do. However God tells us what will happen if we do our own thing and ignore His leading. As we mentioned before God has a special work for you to do, just as in Jesus’ time. Today there are many people who are in need of different kinds of help. God in His wisdom gave each of us specific gifts to care for the varied needs of the people around us. Some of you may be passionate about sharing God’s word with your friends and people you meet. Some of you may become nurses or doctors to assist in healing those who are ill. Some others of you may have the gift of teaching and enjoy helping others learn how to read and understand the Bible. Some of you love to help anyone you see that is in need: to help them carry water or go to the store, help around the yard – and do so happily. These are only some of the many gifts that God has given us to use to help others. We can use our gifts to be good examples to others, like Jesus is for us.
