Who we areScottish Seas is a co-operative of Scottish fishermen, working together to bring the best of wild Scottishseafood to the world in a way that sustains our homecommunities and the seas we depend upon.We land our catch at different ports along the Scottishcoast. We fish for a broad range of North Atlantic species, from haddock and cod to langoustines and scallops. We work inshore and offshore. Some of us are fairly newto the business, and some come from fishing lineagesgoing back generations. What we share is a commitment to creating a sustainablefuture for our communities, our fisheries, and oureco-system. It was formed bythree founding Fishermen Producers Organizations (FPOs)and represents around 60 vessels and more than 250fishermen.Founding vessels and fishermen-members belong to: Aberdeen FPO Orkney FPO West of Scotland FPO

Like most fishing communities around the world, this isa family business. Many of our boats are skippered bythird or fourth generation fishermen, some with hopes ofwatching a fifth generation take over the operations in thefuture. The new Audacious gets ready to hit the water for the first time.

On the same note, we are more than just families andfishing boats. There are entire communities that dependon our landings for business. From those who work onthe docks, in warehouses, processing or packing to thosewho transport our fish to far away places, we are proudto be an integral part of our greater communities. It is for this reason that we joined together to formScottish Seas as a fishermen’s co-op. We know that toface the future, we need to supply consistent year-roundfish to chefs and retailers. We can do this by workingtogether. Our fishermen land fish inports all around Scotland. We then hand select the fishfrom the boats to be sent tothe US market.Because we are a fishermenowned company we canensure continuous supply ofthe best seafood. Our staffis in touch with the boatswhile still at sea, allowing usrecieve information aboutthe catch prior to landing.

How We FishScottish Seas vessels fish in the rich, deep andcold waters off the West, North and East coastsof Scotland. Our Scottish waters are some ofthe most diverse on the planet. The warmerplankton-rich waters coming in from thesouthwest mix with the cold waters of the NorthSea creating an ideal environment for one of themost plentiful regions on the globe.Scottish Seas members adhere to the UK’sResponsible Fishing Scheme. Additonally wehave boats fishing under Marine Stewardshipcertification for haddock, cod and pollock. Our stocks are int

Because of this confluence of waters with varying temperatures, our weather patterns can be quite harsh and unpredictable. Scotland is Europe’s windiest country and our fleet faces over 30 storms per year in gale force winds. This can make for difficult and dangerous fishing conditions. Our fleet fish in waters that range from 50 to 200m in depth, but there are offshore areas that include waters of depths greater than 2,000m. Our offshore boats stay out at sea anywhere from 5 to 8 days, while our inshore vessels remain at sea for 3 to 4 days.e carefully managed, many through ternational certifications like MSC.

Unique LandingSome of our members are pair trawlers who work intandem landing fish, alternating between the paired boats. The paired boats must approach close enough to throw anet line from one to the other. Then the crew membersstretch the net between the boats and effectuate the trawl.Regardless of the trawling style, once the fish has beenhauled on board, the crew heads below deck to gut andsort the entire catch. This happens very quickly and thefish is immediately sorted, packed into shallow boxes andiced. This style of immediate packing means the fishermen only touch the fish once, when it comes on board. They are laid out in an organized manner which means the meat is not broken nor does it need re-sorting.Peterhead fish market The fish boxes are then off loaded from the boats with an on-board crane and are ready for further processing or packing.

Faithlie off-loads in Peterhead The fish landed in Scotland, especially inPeterhead, are recognised internationally as beingwell looked after: gutted precisely and cleanly, iced properly, as well as packed.
