Chapter One A SURPRISE IN THE KITCHEN There is a small cottage near the forest. An old woman and an old man live there. They don’t have any children. • cottage: a small house 2 • old: not young

One day, they are a bit hungry. The old woman is in the kitchen. She’s making a cookie. It’s a gingerbread man. She says “I’m making a little gingerbread boy.” She sings “Mix, mix, mix.. Stir, stir, stir…” She starts to knead the dough. She adds some butter and an egg. Then, she puts some ginger. She smiles. She shapes the gingerbread man carefully. He has a head, a little nose, two eyes and a big smiling mouth. He has arms and legs. • little: small 3 • knead: shape • ginger: a reedlike plant

She adds some chocolate chips for buttons. She places some sweet on the gingerbread man’s tummy. The old woman is happy. She looks over her glasses and “You’re my little gingerbread boy,” she says and smiles. • tummy: stomach 4

She puts him in a pan. She opens the oven door and puts him into the hot oven. Then she waits. • oven: stove 5

Soon the old woman hears a voice. She is a bit scared. Then, she realizes that the noise is coming from the oven. “Open the door!” it says. “I want to go out.” She wears her kitchen gloves and opens the oven door carefully. She is really excited. And….. The gingerbread man jumps out. He hops down the kitchen floor. The old woman screams “Oh, my God! I can’t believe my eyes.” • scared: afraid • excited: thrilled 6
