Chapter One HELPLESS JACK! There is a little boy, called Jack. He lives with his widow mother in a small house in the forest. Jack’s father is dead. They need money but Jack is too young to work and his mother is old. Jack can’t plow the farm, too. They don’t have enough money. They can’t find food to eat. There is no furniture in their house. They have no tables, no chairs or beds. They sleep on the floor. They are really poor. • widow: a woman whose husband is dead • dead: not living 2 • furniture: chairs, tables, beds, cupboards in a building

All they have is an old cow, Daisy. But it can’t give milk because they can’t feed it. It is unhealthy. Jack has worn clothes and his shoes are full of holes. Jack sometimes lies in long grass under the shade of a tree. He daydreams a delicious food. In his dream, Jack opens the doors of the kitchen cupboards. The shelves of the cupboards are full of delicious cakes, fresh fruits, biscuits and chocolate. He eats these delicious foods in his dream. Suddenly, his mother calls him; “Jack, Jack, come on. It is supper time.’’ Jack wakes up unhappily and gets in the house. They have only bread for supper. He remembers the food in his dream. “We have no food, Jack,’’ says his mother. “We have no money. I am sorry to say that but you have to take Daisy to the market and sell it.’’ Jack feels so sad. Daisy is his only friend and he loves it so much. “I can’t, mom. I can work and earn money,’’ says Jack. The mother replies “No, you can’t, Jack. You are too young. You can’t work. We need money. Daisy is old and weak now. It can’t give milk anymore. We must do it. Go and sell it.’’ Jack is helpless. “Okay, mom,’’ he says. He can’t sleep all night. He is too upset. He prays God to change his mother’s mind in the morning. The next morning, Jack opens his eyes and looks out of the window. Daisy moos outside. Jack must take it to the market today. He pleads to his mother for the last time. “Please let her stay here with us, mom,’’ he says. “There is nothing to eat for breakfast, lunch or supper,’’ the mother sighs. • weak: not strong • mind: decision, belief • pray: to speak with God to ask • plead: request 4 or something • sigh: breathe out slowly and noisily

“We will starve if we don’t sell Daisy. It is the market day today in the town, so you must go now. Make sure you get a good price. She is worth five gold coins!’’ Jack takes Daisy to the market. He feels nervous. He doesn’t want to do it. Jack and Daisy walk through the forest and arrive at the market. The market is very busy and noisy. People buy and sell animals; sheep, ducks, horses. That’s not all. There are foods for sale; cakes, biscuits, chocolate, fruits like his dream. He remembers the empty cupboards at home. “It is time to sell Daisy,’’ Jack decides. • starve: suffer or die because of hunger 5
