1A CELEBRITIES READING – DETAILED A Read the texts about celebrities. Match them with the photos from the previous exercise. Text 1 I love listening to pop music, so my favourite celebrity is Lady Gaga. She is a very famous singer and she is really unique. She is thin and blonde and she wears interesting clothes. Her music is fun and I love dancing to it. Some people don’t like Lady Gaga because she is different, but I think she is really cool. Text 2 My favourite celebrity is David Beckham. David Beckham is very sporty and muscular. He is an amazing football player. David Beckham comes from the UK and he is married to Victoria Beckham who was in a famous music group called the Spice Girls. I think David Beckham is really attractive and he is very friendly, too. 1A CELEBRITIES READING SKILL/TIP reading the topic sentence of a paragraph Skimming means reading a text quickly to understand the main idea. When you skim a text or article you should read the title and predict what the text is about. Then you should read the first sentence of each paragraph. The first sentence of a paragraph is usually the topic sentence. The topic sentence gives the main idea of the paragraph. A Work in pairs. Read the topic sentences and predict what the paragraph is about. 1 Beyoncé sings songs about love and relationships. 2 Today, Beyoncé lives in Los Angeles in California. 3 Beyoncé is a famous American singer and songwriter. 1B CELEBRITIES READING A Skim the article about Mark Zuckerberg and answer the questions. 1 Where is Mark Zuckerberg from? 2 What can you do on Facebook? 3 Why is Facebook different than other social media websites? Mark Zuckerberg is a very well-known American computer programmer. Zuckerberg went to Harvard in the USA and studied computer science. He is famous for starting Facebook in 2004. He started Facebook in his college when he was 20 years old with four of his college friends. Facebook is a social media website where you can chat with friends, write on your friend’s wall and share interesting and funny articles and videos. At the beginning, Facebook was only available at Harvard, but it quickly became popular in other universities in the USA and later all around the world. Facebook is very popular because it is unique and people enjoy socialising on the internet. Facebook is different to other social media websites because you can communicate with people in lots of different ways. For example, you can use Twitter to send short messages or pieces of information, but you can share stories and lots of information on Facebook. Facebook is more social than Twitter because you communicate better with your friends. On Twitter, you can send short texts about something that is happening at the moment. Twitter is instant and is great for news. 2A PARTIES AND CELEBRATIONS READING A Read the texts and match them with the celebrations in the pre-reading section. Text 1 favourite festival is the Chinese New Year. It starts in January or February every year My we celebrate it for 15 days. There are always lots of fireworks and all the family and comes together to celebrate. On the 15th day of the festival we have the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival is a wonderful celebration when all the children fly lanterns in the evening. It is a beautiful thing to see. Text 2 from a small town on the east coast of Spain called Buñol. It is a quiet little town, I come except in August every year when we celebrate the tomato festival. The celebration lasts for one hour and everyone comes into the town square and throws tomatoes at each other. The festival started in 1945 and every year we celebrate as a community on the last Wednesday of August. After the festival, we clean the streets and then we have a big dinner party. Text 3 spring in my country, we celebrate the festival of colours. We celebrate during the Every full moon in March every year. It is a Hindu festival to celebrate love and the beginning of spring. First, we celebrate with a bonfire and the next day is the festival of colours. During the festival of colours we throw coloured powder on everyone in the streets. Everyone sings and dances together. It is a beautiful day! 19

When you scan a text, you do not read every word; you only look for the information you need. A Read the questions below and write the type of information you need to find in the text near them. 1 Where is the festival? Place – city or country 2 When does the festival start? 3 When does the festival end? 4 How long does the festival last? 5 What time is the party on Thursday? B Scan the text and find the answers for the questions in exercise A. The Running of the Bulls is a very famous festival in Spain but many people also believe that the festival is bad for the animals. Every year, many Spanish people and foreigners celebrate the festival in Pamplona, a small town in the north of Spain. The festival starts on 6th July and finishes on 14th July. It goes on for 8 days in total. On the last day, there is a big party where everyone in the town comes together to celebrate. The party starts on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. and goes all night. 21
