Chapter One POOR T ESSA! 2

There is a girl called Tessa. She lives with her mother in a wooden house in the forest. They are really poor. Her mother works hard. Tessa picks flowers in the forest and she sells them. They don’t have enough money. They don’t have enough food. • poor: having little money • pick: remove, gather • enough: as much as necessary 3

They can’t eat delicious food. They are always hungry. One day, her mother says “Oh, my little daughter. We have no food. Look! This bowl is empty now.’’ The mother is too sad and helpless. Tessa says “Don’t worry, mom. I will look for some food in the forest. I can find it. Please trust me.’’ She leaves home with a basket. She walks through the trees. She looks for food. She looks everywhere. But she can’t find any food. She is too tired and hungry. She sits under a tree. She cries “I can’t find food. I am very hungry. My mother is really hungry, too.’’ A deer and two rabbits come and see Tessa. The deer asks “Why are you crying, pretty girl?’’ • hungry: in need of food • helpless: unable to do anything • bowl: a round, deep dish • look for: try to find • empty: not filled • trust: believe • leave: go away 4

Tessa answers “We have no food. I search for food all day. But I can’t find any food here. My mother is waiting for me. She won’t make dinner for us.’’ The rabbits say “Don’t cry. You are a nice girl. If you look for carefully, you can find food for yourself.’’ Then, the animals leave the girl alone. • carefully: with great attention • alone: without other people 6

It is late. Tessa stops looking for food. She walks to her home unhappily. Tessa meets an old woman on the way. “Hey, little girl! Can you help me? ’’she asks. Tessa answers “Sure. How can I help you?’’ “I am so tired that I can’t carry this heavy bag,’’ the old woman says. “Let me carry your bag, Madam,’’ says Tessa. The old woman answers “Oh, thank you, little girl. That is very kind of you! ’’ Tessa and the old woman walk through the forest. “What are you doing in the forest alone?’’ the old woman asks. “I live with my mom in a near village. We are poor and hungry. I am searching for food in the forest,’’ answers Tessa. • unhappily: sadly • kind: helpful • heavy: difficult to move, not light 7

The old woman says “You are a helpful girl. Thank you. Here is a gift for you because you are very kind.’’ Tessa asks “What is it? Is it a pot?’’ The old woman answers “Yes, it is a magic pot. When you are hungry, just say to the pot ‘Cook, little pot, cook.’ It will cook delicious porridge for you.” The little pot fills with sweet porridge. The porridge starts to bubble in the little porridge pot. Tessa can’t believe her eyes. “When you want to stop the pot, you must say ‘Stop, little pot, stop.” And the little pot stops cooking. The little girl is very surprised and becomes really happy. • gift: present • magic: having special powers • pot: round dish for cooking food 9

“Take it home, the little girl,’’ the woman says. “Say cook, little pot, cook. It cooks porridge for you. And say stop, little pot, stop. It stops cooking,’’ she reminds. “Thank you!’’ cries Tessa.
