TEXT ABORIGINIES “Aborigine” means the people who live on the Australian continent. They are the native of the continent and they have different life customs, religious belief and cultural traditions. Aborigines live in tribes. They believe every human being is an important part of a community and so human being is a precious creature. People call them “savages” but they create a social and a fair society for themselves. They come together at breakfast and dinner time and they share their 4 food. Traditionally, they wear a few clothes. They use animal skins to cover themselves but their legs and bodies are generally naked. They like wearing accessories like necklaces, hair combs, waistbands, masks, or headdresses. Aboriginal people respect nature very much. They say “The land is our food, our culture, our spirit and identity.” They do not know the time concept. The days, months and years are not important for them. They believe “Dreamtime.” Dreamtime is the Aborigines’ understanding of the world and its creation. It includes past, present and future. They say “The time is not important. Unit 1
The good deeds you do 5 in time is important.” They generally do not know reading or writing. They transmit their culture to the next generation by orally. At nights, they sit around the fire, and old Aborigines tell stories about the past and the young Aborigines to learn from the elder’s stories. They are not aware about the concept of money. They hunt together and they share their belongings. They build their own houses from trees so they don’t need money. In the Australian continent, different kinds of people live. They love people and nature. They live happily in nature altogether.
