Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] JULY 2015 Page 7 SNAIL INFESTATION REPORT by Brian Waldman Many homeowners, boaters, anglers and swimmers have likely noticed the increase in snails around the lake these past 2 years. The POA Board would like to pass along the following information from the USGS.gov website about the snails in question, which are considered invasive here in Indiana. Common name: Chinese mystery snail Size: can reach 2.5 inches Native Range: From Southeast Asia to Japan and eastern Russia. Status: Considered an invasive species Great Lakes Region: The first record of the Chinese msytery snail in the Great Lakes dates from some time between 1931 and 1942 from the Niagara River, which flows into Lake Ontario. It also occurs in Lake Erie, where it was introduced some time prior to 1968, and has been reported from the states of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and New York. Ecology: It feeds on organic and inorganic bottom material as well as algae, mostly by scraping. It Prefers slow-moving freshwater rivers, streams, and lakes with soft, muddy or silty bottoms. Life cycle: Females live up to 5 years, while males live up to 3, occasionally 4 years. Young are born from June through October in eastern North America in shallow water, then females begin migrating to deeper water for the winter in the fall. Impact of Introduction: To date, this species has exerted no recorded impacts in the Great Lakes and is considered relatively “benign” with respect to its potential to greatly change or influence ecosystems and native species. Can clog screens of water intake pipes, boat lifts and hoists, and become a general nuisance. Management Control: Specific control methods for the Chinese mystery snail have yet to be developed. Biological Control: Manipulation of predator fishes and turtles that eat snails may be useful in the control of snail populations. However, as a relatively large snail, they may avoid being eaten by smaller fishes. Physical Control: Drying is not an effective control method for mystery snails. Field experiments under normally humid conditions indicated that this snail can survive exposure to air for at least 4 weeks. Chemical control: There are copper compounds that are sold as snailicides but they are usually not selective in the snails they kill. With Chinese mystery snails possessing the ability to “close up”, more damage would probably occur to native snails in the treatment area than to the target pest.

Page 12 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] JULY 2015 THE KEY OF CERTAINTY Every year there are at least one or two comments from the kids that will keep me smiling unƟl next year’s Kids’ Character Camp rolls around. There were a couple of good ones this year, but top prize has to go to Peyton. As Miss Sarah was teaching a very interesƟng lesson, there’s Peyton, giving full aƩenƟon. A comment in her story was that, not everyone believes there’s a God; to which Peyton immediately responds, “Well of course there’s a God, He made space and me.” PreƩy deep statement for a second grader! It’s not his words that keep me smiling, but his tone. He said it in the way you might say, “Well of course there’s a sun, that’s how we have day… dah!” The sheer natural certainty of it! That’s what Jesus was geƫng at when He said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like liƩle children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MaƩ 18:3 As we grow older, we accumulate facts, including some that seem to conflict with one another. We experience decepƟon and cynicism. The result is that we doubt as much as we believe… in everything. The real key into God’s kingdom is not belief, but certainty in belief. That is why Jesus made the startling comment, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.” It is why the father pleading with Jesus to heal his son insƟncƟvely said, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” It is not that we have certainty for the sake of certainty, but rather, we are open to truths that are worthy of certainty. A “childlike faith”, as defined by Scripture, is not a faith, absent of higher reason. AŌer all, we are also told to mature in our faith. The powerful quality of the child’s faith is not in childishness, but in its certainty. To hold on to that child-like certainty, your spiritual understanding must mature with your physical years. So how does a person “mature” spiritually? There is no single answer, but the apostle Paul gave the Roman church a vital starƟng point, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 TransformaƟon requires a consistent and deep relaƟonship; with what God has already said, with His people, where He is working now, and of course, His presence. Growth doesn’t avoid the hard quesƟons but wrestles with them on the ground God has already given you. The boƩom line is this; if you want the keys to God’s kingdom, you need certainty. To have certainty, be as open as a child, but conƟnue to grow up spiritually. That takes hard work, but the reward is; you get to be a kid again… like Peyton. Anyway, it is certainly food for thought. Pastor Kevin and his wife & editor, Kathy, are happy members of Canaan Community Church, just off Heritage Lake. canaan-church.org BIBLE STUDY GROUP The Bible is more than just another book. It is God's revelation of himself .. The very mind of God. The more we know about the Bible the more we know about God. It's like working a big jig saw puzzle. The more pieces that come together, the clearer the picture becomes. It is a critic of the thoughts and intents of man's heart. It is absolute truth .. Not man's opinion or religious bent. It is Pre-written history , the past, present and future. It tells how we got here, who we are, what purpose God has for us and how we can have a relationship with Him. It's a revelation of Jesus Christ and His love for us. 2 Tim 2:16 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] JULY 2015 Page 13 Heritage Heartland Homemakers by Marianne Novak After making cards with the campers at Kids Count Camp during the day on Tuesday, Homemakers enjoyed a relaxing dinner (shortened) meeting at The Fluttering Duck. Discussion included recapping our successful Marina breakfast on May 30. BIG THANKS goes out to Donna McGinley and Bev Spires who put this event together and pulled it off with precision! Our next meeting topic was the Kids Count Camp. With a sticker here and a sticker there, here a sticker, there a sticker, stickers, stickers everywhere! Bev organized the craft of helping the campers make cards. Each card was unique to the camper's own liking. Lastly, we had a lengthy discussion about the up-coming Putnam County Fair. After the meeting portion of the evening, Meegan installed our officers using the metaphor of birds. She even made us celebratory cards. It was quite charming! July 30 2 P.M. at Extension Office Leader Lesson - Couponing 101 Heritage Lake Book Club by Marianne Novak This month's book selection was The Chaperone by Laura Moriarity. We enjoyed the evolution of Cora and thought the historical account of Louise Brooks was a very clever vehicle for the author to present that fictional character. Cora started out as a very prim and proper middle-aged woman with many secrets. Her secrets had the potential to hurt many people she held dear. Rather than expose those secrets as she sought her own personal happiness, she found clever ways to hide them. We admired her courage to do so. The novel's rating was 3.6. Up-coming book club discussions: July 8 The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein August 12 Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarity September 9 A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler Heritage Lake Garden Club by Christina Shinovich The Garden Club met June 11th at 9:30AM. Sue and Donna had planned for us to visit 13 homes & Gardens: 1. Ben & LeAnne Fuchs, 2. Jeff & Jane Collins, 3. Anthony & Brenda Smotherman, 4. Dan & Ellen Smock, 5. Scott & Leslie Herrick, 6. John & Beth Metzger, 7. Leon & Jean Nascimbene, 8. Ted & Zrinka Repass, 9. Philip & Betty Spears, 10. Tom & Kim Kennedy, 11. Sue Craighead, 12. May Davis, 13. Christina Shinovich. All the Gardens were beautiful of course we hit a Garage Sale along the way! All this was followed by a delicious lunch prepared by Sue. It was beautiful—hot day and the drinks were welcomed.
