Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS 5-26-2011 Publisher: Heritage Lake Community Services JUNE 2011 The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics By Francis Scott Key 1814 Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light The VFW will have a tribute at What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? the Heritage Lake / Clear Creek Cemetery Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, Memorial Day , MAY 30th at 8:0 0 AM O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: \"In God is our trust.\" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] Page 7 Health and Fitness Corner CHILDREN, FITNESS AND HEALTH Last month we discussed ways to get your children involved in fitness and adding healthful choices to their diet, while eliminating sugary empty filler foods. This month I would like to introduce you to the “Green Smoothie”. You may be familiar with the prepackaged smoothie mix in the freezer section of your grocery store. Most of these have added sug- ars and or preservatives. The smoothies you purchase at fast food chains are full of unhealthy ingredients too. Green Smoothies are full of healthy ingredients without added sugars. They are green, because we add our green leafy vegetables to the fruit. The fruit’s natural sweetness disguises the greens. Drinking Green Smoothies are a great way to get green veggies into yours and your children’s diet. All experts agree that we need to eat fresh fruits, veggies, and greens every day – and most of us don’t eat enough of them! For optimal health adults should try to eat 1-2 bunches of greens per day according to researcher Victoria Boutenko, who wrote, “Green for Life”. Try chewing all those greens and your jaws will be tired! Green Smoothies are a perfect solution. Some of the Benefits of Drinking Green Smoothies include: * more energy, * less body aches and pain~because of their alkalizing effects, * normalized blood sugar, * reduced or \"cured\" insomnia,* increased libido, * mental clarity and focus, * better vision, * increased fiber intake, * regular bowel movements, * clearer skin, * rich in chlorophyll, * less illness, * easy weight loss, * reduce bad food cravings, * balanced body PH, * reduced craving for coffee and caffeine ... and the positive benefits goes on. The best fruit for the smoothies are: bananas, pears, peaches, nectarines, mangoes, strawberries, blueberries, and apples. (low sugar~use an avocado and berries) You choices for greens are: spinach, kale, collards, parsley, romaine lettuce, bok choy, and other edible weeds. The darker the leaves, the more nutrients the vegetable usually has. I have found that spinach is the mildest green to use in Green Smoothies when you are just starting to add them into your diet. For the best absorption and assimilation always drink your smoothie on an empty stomach. Drinking smoothies is a great way to start the day. You can make them the night before and just grab one and drink it on you way to work. You can take them for your break at work and avoid the mid-day slump and need for coffee or sugary snack. Instructions: To make a Green Smoothie you will need a good blender. 2 cups of water, 4 pears-cut into pieces. Begin with 1/2c. to 1 c. of spinach or other mild green ( start adding more as you get used to drinking them )This is the basic recipe. For more variety you can use banana’s* instead of pears and add any frozen berry or other fruit listed above and blend until smooth. Just don’t forget your greens. Greens provide protein and lots of minerals. If you are dia- betic or have blood sugar issues use ½ of an avocado instead of the pear or banana and use berries, which are low glycemic. You can also add ice and blend for a slushy smoothie. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your flavor combinations, use your favorite fruits and add spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg or vanilla. I like to add a small amount of fresh ginger. *Only use ripe banana’s with spots on them for optimal sweetness and nutri- tional benefits. Green Smoothies will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days if filled to the brim in an airtight glass jar. I like to use mason jars. If you want your smoothies sweeter, just add a few drops of liquid Stevia. It has zero calories and is zero on the gly- cemic index. Stevia is a natural sweetener that is made from a plant. You can purchase it at Kroger’s in the health food section, or buy the plant at Hobbit Garden’s. If the green color is disturbing to you or your child, use a colored cup with a lid. Most children think the color is fun. Encourage children by giving your green smoothies fun names. Involve your children by allowing them to choose the fruits and the greens when you go to the store. If they are very young let them push the buttons on the blender and watch. Most of all, make it pleasant for your children so they develop healthy eating habits that last a lifetime. If you search green smooth- ies on the internet you will find tons of recipes, websites and other helpful information. ON A FITNESS NOTE: Hendricks County Parks are sponsoring the “Summer Fun Run Series” again this year. On Wednesday evenings during the summer you can visit one of Hendricks County’s local parks and walk/run a 1 mile or 5K course. It’s FREE for all ages. Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] Page 11 food for thought I’m going to steal from a pastor friend of mine! Pastor Mick Buchanan of Roachdale Christian Church has a sin- gle word motto, “engage.” That one word sums up what The Church is here for. As a group of people, the purpose is first to engage God, and the second is to engage people. When both are done in a real and positive way, good things happen. Our church isn’t perfect, but I believe Canaan has some incredibly committed and growing Christians. I am truly grateful to be a part of them. I believe we’re making progress on the engaging God portion. But there has been an increasing desire to do more for and in the community. Not as some kind of self-promotion, but for the sake of the community in which we live. After all, if we can’t engage our own community in a positive way, why are we here? Each month, the idea behind this article is to provide a little “food for thought.” So here’s what’s been on my mind to share. Among other efforts, here are a few good things Canaan folks are doing in and for our community: The Activity Center gets turned into our man-cave for an hour or so. The MEN’S GROUP is dedicated to exploring Biblical truths as it applies to real life experience. But considering the 'not so fancy snacks’ and the kicked back atmosphere, this is defi- nitely a regular bunch of guys. What isn't so regular is the amazing way that one man's life experience can impact another's, just through sharing. We’re never more than an hour and change, and we’re always glad we’ve made it. Men’s Group meets on alternating Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm at the Activity Center. Upcoming dates: May 31, June 14, 28, and July 12 (you get the idea). Here’s an interesting story. Through Pastor Jason at Bainbridge Christian Church, we began a relationship with a ridiculously talented recording group out of Nashville called MOSAIC. They sent me an email saying they could be up our way on July 3rd. Hmmm, I wondered… I approached the POA and asked what they’d think about having a, par-excellence musical group, hold an outdoor concert/ worship to cap off Sunday on the lake’s 4th of July weekend. They were on board! I then asked the group how they felt about an outdoor con- cert. They were a little dubious. They loved the concert gig, but said, “We haven’t had the best luck with outdoor sound.” …Well, let’s just say; sound is one of my things (even professionally for a time). After I explained on how I planned to turn the lake into a huge sound transducer, they were into it. Bot- tom line: This should be good! As of now, the concert will kick off at 6:30 pm, Sunday, July 3rd. The plan is to set up behind the Activity Center. If we happen to change location, don’t worry. Just follow the sound. (Here them for yourself: On facebook, check out their info page and links “Mosaic”; or their site mosaicworship.com) V-We just wanna play ball! In the summer, the lake is really about having fun in the sun. And that’s what we want to do too! Perhaps you’ve seen a guy who runs an abusive number of miles around the lake each day. Well, that’s my buddy Steve. Steve, along with his son Mike and ever-nimble friend, Jordy, have been trying to spread the word to all- especially Jr. and Senior High kids. They are trying to get some volleyball action going on down at the volleyball court. All and any teens are welcome to join in. Steve and his entourage are meeting on alternating Saturdays, 6:00 pm. Dates for the summer are: Saturdays, June 4, 18, July 9, Aug. 6, 20 (Soccer or B-ball in Aug.) Kevin Thompson is pastor of Canaan Community Church, just off Gettysburg, 800 E www. MAY 2011

Page 12 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] Heritage Heartland Homemakers by Nancy Skala On May 17th 12 members met at 11am for Lunch. Our guest, Sandra Glass from the Putnam County Extension Office was introduced. Out two Hostesses served Spaghetti and Meatballs, other members supplied the side dishes and des- serts. The Hostess Gift was won by Nancy Skala. Out meeting was called to order at noon. Next we had our opening items of Flag Salute, Club Creed, Thought for the Month, Roll Call and Song of the Month. After the reading of the Minutes and Treasurers’ Report, were our Commit- tee Reports by members. Sharon Glass, Treasurer of the Homemakers Putnam County Council gave our Lesson this month on “Ingredient Sub- stitutions”. The lesson included a short written quiz and a handout with substitutes if a specific ingredient is not avail- able when making a recipe. It was very informative and all of us enjoyed the lesson. Under old business, one thing shared was at the Spring Dessert held last month our club was one of three clubs to win recognition selected by the Putnam County Playhouse Players for our table decorations and outfits worn to represent the Musical, “My Fair Lady”. The prize won was that our club has been invited to attend the dress rehearsal of “Music Man” at the Putnam County Theater on May 31st. Under New Business, our President covered the upcoming Nutrition Days to be presented at Kids Camp in June by Club Members, happenings at the most recent County Council Meeting, a donation to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for books to benefit our Putnam County Children, and the Putnam County Fair 2011. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 14th at the Clubhouse at 11am (our regular meeting has been rescheduled due to a conflict with our involvement in Kids Camp). Please join us if you are interested in finding out what our busy and energetic Homemakers Club is all about. Heritage Lake Book Club by Marianne Novak Members agreed that it was difficult to separate fact from fiction while reading Sarah's Key by Tatiana deRasnay. This horrific tale went back and forth between 1942 and 2002 France as Sarah's story enraveled the events surrounding the 4,000 children who were sent to concentration camps. It does prove that people can survive terrible things and reminds us to: \"Remember never to for- get!\" We rated the book 3.16. Future selections: June 8 Saving CeeCee Honeycut by Beth Hoffman July 13 The Good Daughter by Jasmine Darznik August 10 Self-selected fantasy book Regular meetings are held at the Clubhouse at 1 P.M. on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. For more information, call Julie Prather at 386-2431. Also, when you're at the Clubhouse, visit the bookcase in the small conference room to \"borrow\" a book. Return it when you are finished reading it. Heritage Lake Garden Club by Bobby Salm TO EVERY ONE THAT HAS WORKED HARD ON THEIR GARDENS (you do not have to be a Garden Club Mem- ber) AND WOULD LIKE TO SHOW THEM OFF, PLEASE CONTACT BOBBY SALM 386-7199. On June 9th we are looking for some new gardens to visit in the Heritage Lake area. If you would like us to visit your garden in the morning please let me know. You are also welcome to join us at lunch. It is our annual pitch-in luncheon and garden tour. The tour will start at 9:30am at the clubhouse and end at the clubhouse. Garden Club Members please contact me if you are going to be able to attend our luncheon. You can let me know if you want to bring a salad or dessert. We always have a good time and look forward to seeing all our snow birds. REMEMBER: WE WORK ON THE BOXES THE THIRD THURSDAY, JUNE 16TH. 9:30AM AT THE CLUBHOUSE. MAY 2011
