I want to thank Pat Livvix for all of her efforts and time in bringing this community event to the point of being a tradition that, not only we all look forward to and benefit from, but a lot of folks from surrounding commu- nities have come to enjoy. The success of an event of this magnitude does not happen overnight, it took years to get it to this point --- and for that we are all grateful for Pat’s involvement. I also want to thank the Clean Up Committee for stepping up and assisting with this year’s sale. We could not had done it without their help, and guidance. Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] or [email protected] Page 11 POOL FUND NEWS The Pool Committee keeps working hard to achieve their goal of having a Swimming Pool for this coming summer. We really need everyone’s help---everyone that owns one or more lots, with or without a house. Many of us on the committee will never use the pool for swimming but we want the children to have a safe place to play in the summer. Several of us have been teachers or worked in schools and know and care about the children and their sum- mer needs. Please help us keep these children safe and show them we really care. We had a very successful garage sale this year as well as last year. Between the two sales we’ve made over $3000—not near what we need but great. Thanks to all of you who do- nated to the sale and all of those that helped: Missy Edgar and Richard Ruhe with the help of Phyllis Taylor, Peggy Purvis, Jim Ash, and Jan Sallee cooked and sold lots of goodies; Nancy Schuch, Marie Goins, Lois Napier, Pat Reiva, Janelle Clements, Mary Williams and Nancy and Frank Skala plus the kitchen help spent hours setting up the sale and manning it. Thanks to all of you that purchased items or donated money in our jar. You all are real caring POA people. Keep up the good work and let’s get the pool in for not only the children but for every- one. Nancy Schuch has said she will be happy to teach water aerobics in the morning for non-working people and in the evening for working people. How great is that!! I’ve never been in the pool but I’ll do that. I also want to thank the office staff for coming to the basement after working in the of- fice and help pack up the left over items and the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts with their leaders for packing the truck from the Humane Society. Mary Williams took all the left over baby items to the Carenet Pregnancy Center –How great was that, also. Let’s all get on the “Band Wagon” to get the job done because we’re all one Family of Heritage Lake Property Owners that need to think of our future and the future of our families and our home values. Page 12 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] or [email protected] Heritage Heartland Homemakers by Nancy Skala On April 20th members and guests gathered at the Clubhouse for an “Egg- Dish” potluck lunch. There were all kinds of dishes shared made from eggs, including some hot main dishes to delicious desserts. Our Hostesses this month were Sue Holzer and Pam Miller, and each person received an “Earth Friendly Bag” at their place setting in honor of Earth Week. The Hostess Gift was won by Rosalyn Antcliff. At 1pm our President called the meeting to order. After our opening items, Secretary’s Report and Treasurer’s Report followed our individual Committee Reports by members. Next, some of the items covered under Old and New Business: we were each reminded about bringing our “Pennies for the 2010 Fair”; a review of the District Meeting held in Parke County last month; discussed our “Recycle” Projects to be made from denim for the 2010 Fair; our Casino Trip held on April 14th; the Spring Dessert to be held at the end of the month at Putnam County Fairgrounds where our club will be hosting a Chicken & Noodle Dinner for 150 Putnam County Homemaker Members along with the Rustlers Homemakers Club; and lastly we selected a date to make pillows for Riley Hospital in May. Our Lesson usually follows the Business Opening portion of our meeting but was delayed until the end of our meeting as Sue Holzer and Pam Miller presented our Lesson on making Cards. The two ladies brought many craft items so that each of us could make two or more cards each complete with envelopes. The finished products included buttons, ribbons, lace, puffy flowers and butterflies, glue, glitter, many types of stamps with assorted colors of stamp pads, peel and stick fancy print of individual letters for Names or Words to personalize our cards, other crafty items to glue, fancy pens for the written or printed words, and of course Baby Wipes to clean our hands and the tables of the ink and glue, (one of my cards I placed on the refrigerator with a magnet when I got Home as my “Art Project” to share with my family). Our meeting adjourned at 3pm following our Closing Prayer. Reminder to bring to our meeting next month an item that could be, or has been, reused, redone, restyled, or recycled; the items brought will be part of our Lesson for May. food for thought In the last few years of my flying career, even the smaller airplanes were fitted with “glass cockpits.” For a large part, flying has become a task of managing an impressive array of data. A moving map display relays every feature on the ground. The map can be overlaid with the present weather from airborne radar or satellite. That in turn, can be combined with routing, real-time traffic and airport approaches. But for all the high tech, there is a humble little instrument that looks out of place on that space age panel. Straight out of the 1940’s is a vacuum powered standby horizon. The FAA mandated that every glass cockpit must have one, and in this case, it was a wise call. Because if all the gee whiz gismos ever fail, the pilot would need this instrument to survive. It would tell him or her, which way was up. When the average pilot disregards his instruments in the absence of visual cues, their senses are completely fooled within 60 sec- onds. Turns feel like you’re going up, but you are actually sending the plane in a downward trajectory. Pilots have a name for it; the graveyard or death spiral. It’s not only our physical senses that suffer disorientation. Our moral senses can get turned around as well. Life can dish out some complicated situations, and when our ethics bend with our situations, we are soon flying blind. Crime, broken families, at risk youth, drugs, alcoholism; they are all lives caught in the spiral. It happens very fast in our high tech, fast paced world. What does a church do for the community? It is that reliable little instrument on the side of your panel. It is a reference to show which way is up. It doesn’t make the rules, it just faithfully reflects the principles God has already put in place. A great pilot once said, “Flying isn’t dangerous as long as you remember it’s dangerous.” Such wisdom fits life in general. Life is a wonderful thing, but it can quickly become a living hell if we lose the sense of which way is up. There’s an instrument to help, it’s called the church. …Anyway, it’s certainly food for thought. Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] or [email protected] Page 13 Heritage Lake Book Club by Marianne Novak Crying Tree by Naseem Rakha stirred up lots of emotions for us both as we read the book, and then when we discussed it. To us mothers, the death of a child would be the worst thing that could happen to us, especially a violent death as depicted in this book. We rated it 3.3. Future selections are as follows: May 12 A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve June 9 The Help by Kathryn Stockett July 14 A classic book of your own choosing Join us on May 7 at DePauw University when we listen to Nobel Laureate, F. W. de Klerk, speak in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Apartheid's End. Regular meetings are held at the Clubhouse at 1 P.M. on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. For more information, call Julie Prather at 386-2431. Also, when you're at the Clubhouse, visit the bookcase in the small conference room to \"borrow\" a book. Return it when you are finished reading it. The Clear Creek Conservancy District board of directors met April 14, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at the district’s office. Directors Present: Brian Waldman, Robert C. Hansen & J. Duane Kelly Also attending: Kathy Deer, Administrative and Financial Manager; Doug Clodfelter, Plant Operator and Operations Manager; Harold Paetow and Richard Ruhr. Brian Waldman moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting. Duane Kelly seconded. Vote unanimous. Kathy Deer reviewed the financial report for the month ending March 31, 2010. Brian Waldman moved to approve the financial report and Register of Claims, with the exception of the claim from the Putnam County Treasurer for mailing Exceptional Benefit Assessments, dated March19, 2010 through April 14, 2010. Duane Kelly seconded. Vote unanimous. Brian Waldman moved to adopt Resolution 2010-3 setting the Sewer Connection Fee at $1,520.00 effective July 1, 2010. The fee is adjusted annually to reflect the change in the CPI-U. Duane Kelly seconded. Vote unanimous. Kathy Deer provided a written report. No Certificates of Deposit mature until May. The Sewer 99 CD’s will be cashed in to call the 2017 and 2018 bonds as was budgeted for this year. A worksheet showing a redemption plan for the 2001 bond issue was also re- viewed. Brian Waldman moved to authorize an additional appropriation to call bonds financing the 2001 sewer installation project. Duane Kelly seconded. Vote unanimous. Garth Hughes has not yet submitted the engineering agreement for the dam inspection to be completed this year. The billing summary shows 1,324 active accounts, one more than last report. The February/March billing statements are due on April 15. Based on conversation with customers it has been determined that customers whose bills were included in the 3-digit 461 sort were delayed somewhere in the postal system and the bills going to Fillmore addresses were not delivered until Monday, April 12. The bills were mailed on March 11. Due to the known postal delivery problem, Brian Waldman moved to not assess late fees on all accounts until April 30. Duane Kelly seconded. Vote unanimous. There were 53 lien warning letters mailed on March 30, 2010. Doug Clodfelter provided a written report showing the average daily flow at 427,000 GPD and peak flow at 691,000 GPD for the month of March, with rainfall at 3.2 inches. A new Power Boss pressure washer with a Honda engine was purchased to replace the old one that was malfunctioning. A new tool box for the utility truck was purchased. Spear Incorporation made repairs to the chlorination equipment. Mike and Don will be replacing the 6” gate valve on the pump truck. Sludge is scheduled to be hauled in the next 30 days before spring planting of the field. Some areas of rip rap around the dam above the water line needs some addi- tional rock. No further information is available at this time on the POA’s pole barn plans. Some evergreens in the planting around the treatment plant fence have died and will be removed. The next regular meeting is rescheduled for 3:00 pm. on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at the district’s office. MAY 2010
