Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] SEPTEMBER, 2017 Page 3 HLPOA INFORMATION Office phone: 765-386-7447 Office Hours Over the past 45 years, Heritage Lake has been made up of many exceptional people that have donated their time to the committees of their choice. These committee members do so much for our community that people do not realize the importance of these volunteers and what they do for all residents that live at Heritage Lake. Many of these volunteers have made this the great community we all have invested in. However, we live in a busier world than 45 years ago, and understand everyone’s spare time is valuable but, new committee members are always needed to continue what has built our community. This is your opportunity to have a voice and make a difference for your community. Each committee has its own agenda, from monitoring structure, to keeping our grounds and lake clean, including future planning for Heritage Lake. If you are interested in learning more about one of the following committees, please contact the office at 765-386-7447 for further information. McCullough Excavating added stone around lift stations V4 and J2 that had eroded from the heavy rainfall. Doug reported that all the lights in the lab/office building have been switched over to LED’s. Michael repaired a damper above the meeting room that had never been properly installed. It was allowing cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer so it is hoped that the heat pump will work more efficiently now. Doug requested the board consider replacing the floor coverings and the board directed that quotes for laminate be obtained. Doug reported that the contractor had begun work on the treatment plant buildings. It became apparent when they began working on the roof that the white facia board and soffits would also need to be replaced to look right with the new roofing and siding. The board had previously set the next regular meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 14 at 10 a.m. at the district’s office.

Page 10 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] SEPTEMBER, 2017 FOOD FOR THOUGHT After the Charlottesville demonstration blew up in the news, I found myself asking, “What exactly, is the alt (alternative) right?” I didn’t care much for what I found, but I admit, I was amazed at the extensive world out there! For example: Beside the blog group with the name sake, “Alt Right”, there’s the Identitarian movement, a white nationalist movement that advocates a re- turn to “traditional western values”. The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi white supremacist website; the Traditionalist Youth Network which sup- ports “white supremacist view of Christianity” (as if that’s possible); The American Nazi Party; National Anarchism out of Britain that sub- scribes to each race living in their own confederation; The Council of Conservative Citizens, an American white supremacist group, and the list goes on and on. Needless to say, we could venture just as far into the left. Each group claims to be enlightened, each group claims to be reasonable and open, but somehow it always slides into exclusivity, violence, and hate… lots and lots of hate! Ultra-left or right, either way; they’re OK with you… until you disagree with them! It makes me think of the letters of John. Some 2000 years ago, he was dealing with the same thing, just by different names. In the face of that same polarized human mentality, here’s a summary of what he said: He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. (1 John 2:9) Whoever hates his brother is a murderer… (1 John 3:15) If someone says, \"I love God,'' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? (I John 4:20) I should also add that the ancient Hebrew saw “hate” a bit differently than we do. “Satam” (saw-tam’) in the Hebrew or “miseo” (mis-eh’-o) in the New Testament Greek, can mean to detest or actively persecute, but it can also mean to simply “love less.” The idea being; you don’t detest someone, you just prefer others more. It’s preferential treatment, usually of our own little group. I guess that’s why special interest groups give me an uneasy feeling, no matter what the interest. If we’re all about women, men, black, white, English or Hispanic, or whatever, it is inherently preferential. We “love less.” When we devalue even one portion of humanity, we devalue being human. Consider the sad history of human atrocity, it all starts with dehumanizing someone. In our society, it seems the collective cry is getting louder. We are a nation born out of unity; it is even our name! Yet, we are watching our society polarize and fracture. How did we get here? …One thing I’ve noticed is just how far both the left and right have moved from God, as God defines Himself. But it’s not just the left or right, it’s us in the middle. With each passing year we move further from a Biblical view of the world; of life; even of God Himself! The average adult today knows less of what the Bible really says than a first grader in the days this nation was born. (Just check out the original “New England Primer!” You can find it on Amazon.) As people continue to radicalize in all directions, we are losing more than a common world view, we are losing a wise one; we have certainly lost a holy one. If any of us think we are walking in the light, or that we love God as we love others less, we are liars, and the first person to whom we are lying, is ourselves. Logic would dictate that if we are so prone to lie to ourselves, we need someone greater than ourselves. We don’t need a return to “traditional values” or religion, or even a relevant brand of Christianity, we need a return to the PERSON of GOD. Then again, that’s been what we’ve needed since we first tasted of knowledge of good and evil. God said, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and … seek my face and turn from their wicked ways … I will … heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14). God says, the offer still stands. ~And that’s certainly food for thought. Pastor Kevin & his lovely editor-wife are happy members of Canaan Community Church. Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] SEPTEMBER, 2017 Page 11 by Marianne Novak In August we held a planning meeting for the year. Jan Hedge joined us as a guest, but we hope that she will become a member in the future! We recapped Family Fun Day at the Fair in July. All agreed that it was a huge success, but we are glad that it is behind us. A BIG THANK YOU to all who supported us at the August 12 breakfast at the Marina. We started spending the money already by donating money to Ronald McDonald’s House and the Putnam County Community Foundation. The next HHH meeting will be on Tuesday, September 19 at noon for lunch. Hostesses are Sue Hoff and Bev Spires. Donna McGinley will teach the lesson on Putnam County Foundation. Call Pam for information (386-6226). Heritage Lake Book Club by Marianne Novak We all remember the nursery rhyme, “The Little Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe,” but did you ever hear of The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules? This is the book that we read for August Book Club. We laughed and munched on decadent chocolates (Ghirardelli - as in the Grand Hotel portrayed in this novel). Then we tried to imagine ourselves in Sweden with the League of Pensioners, pulling off the capers that they did. Catherina Ingleman Sundbergs’s story is a commentary on how society treats the elderly in a retirement home setting. We rated the book 3.1. September 13 Before the Fall by Noah Hawley October 11 The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher November 8 The Last Child by John Hart If you’re interested in learning more about us, call Julia at 386-2431. Heritage Lake Garden Club by Audrey Birtchman The meeting opened at 9:45 A.M. after some delicious bread and coffee. We discussed all the ribbons won at the 2017 Fair – even a second place on our Pepper Jelly. It was a first time for the Garden Club to enter – not bad! We decided to enter again next year. We decided that we need some signs to let guests know about planting and gardens. May Davis told about wild flowers – drying and pressing. She also brought some plants to share. Donna Wilson had the program and told many common sense things about entering the fair and planting. Always add some greenery. Pick early in the morning, before bugs appear. Now is the time to watch for seeds that can be replanted other places. As we get older, we need to cut back on flowers and plant shrubs instead. It is a good idea to have cut flowers in your home. It just makes you feel good. Tomato cages are great for bracing large plants. Welcome to the next meeting on September 14 at 9:30 A.M. If you’d like to hear more call Donna Wilson 386-2702
