PROJECT PROPOSAL Project Title: Handling Hard Times Area of Action Closing the Gap Area: Ballyarnet Youth Worker: Martin Gallagher + Kevin Thompson Quarter:1 Project / Output Aim? This New Beginnings Programme will focus on alleviating some of the concerns young people have as they prepare to make the transition from primary school to secondary school. This 6 week programme will explore some of the key challenges young people have identified and we will apply youth work methodologies to ensure young people are prepared to start this new chapter in their education journey. Methodology: Objectives: Group Discussions Young people will complete a pre and post Walking Debates programme baseline questionnaire to measure Interactive Activities progression against expected outcomes Games with Aims Young people will participate on a 6week Resources Required: programme that will aim to alleviate some of the concerns issues listed during openning Flipchart / Markers session on 9th May 2022 laptop Clever Touch Tv Each session will be delivered in line with Balls learning styles identified during feedback String from young people to maximise participation Clothes Pegs levels with group members. Card Print Outs Young people will receive a certificate of Ink recognition upon successfully completing this programme. Expected Outcomes: Enhanced Personal Capabilities - Managing Feelings

SESSION Date: 10th May 2022 PLAN Programme : New Beginnings Session number: 1 Youth Worker: Martin Gallagher + Kevin Thompson Topic: Introductions Session Aim: Introductory session to our New Beginnings programme Session Objectives: Group members will be aware of the content of the programme that they are participating in and will have an opportunity to shape the delivery style of each session. Young people will devise a working agreement and identify the key issues that we will explore over the next 6 weeks Materials Required: Flipchart/Markers, Laptop, Pages / Ink Activities: 5 Minutes - Welcomes and Introductions - Young People are welcomed to tonight's session and provided with a snapshot of today's session. 10 Minutes - Bean Bag Challenge - Reactions game that encourages teamwork and communication skills. Beanbags are lined up in the middle of the room with young people facing off over the bean bags. Facilitator calls out a range of actions.. touch your head, nose, clap hands etc. when beanbag is called, young people race to grab the beanbag with a point awarded to each successful person. points can be allocated as a team or individually. 10 minutes - Contracting- Young people and staff will devise a working agreement which will establish the grounds for working together on this programme. This agreement will come under the acronym of P.A.C.T - PURPOSE of the experiential growth group- why we are working together and what we aim to achieve. ATTENDANCE- Being present is more than just showing up, in order for young people to get the best experience of this group work project, then they will need to 'be present in each session and participate as best as they can. CHOICE - As a group young people have a choice to show up or not, if they are showing up we are asking each young person to respect one another, support one another, participate in group activities and be open to try new things. TAKING CARE- what happens in vegas..... stays in Vegas, tghis applies to this group work programme too, however, if anyone discloses anything that we think they or someone else may be in danger, then we will apply our child protection policy and report to our CPS tEAM. 10 Minutes - What Jars you? Young people are invited to highlight some of the challenges they are facing as they prepare to transition into secondary school by listing them on a post it not and placing the worry into the worry jar. These worries will help us build the programme over the next 5 weeks. 5 Minutes - Evaluation - Young People invited to reflect on the session using the head heart feet bin evaluation



SESSION Date: 10th May 2022 REVIEW Topic:Introductions Session :1 How did Tonight's Session Go? This session went really well, young people were able to identify the main concerns that they had in relation to moving into secondary education which will provide us with a programme plan to alleviate these concerns and meet the needs of the young people Highlights of the Session Any Issues / Concerns There was a great buzz from all the young one of the young people identifies as people, the excitement from the group to be transgender and miscommunication out of class and the voluntary participation between the school and youth staff lead of young people as we delivered the session. to the person being addressed in wrong pro-noun which caused a negative response Any Theory related to tonight's session? or circle of Courage implementation? increased sesne of belonging with some members who are registered at LYC and a sense of pride of being able to participate in a school programme at their youth club Future Actions: we think it will be better to split the group into smaller groups for discussions and also we will be mindful of LGBTQIA+ language to ensure the young person feels accepted and valued in future sessions.

SESSION Date 17th May 2022 PLAN Programme : New Beginnings Session number: 2 Youth Worker: Martin Gallagher + kevin Thompson Topic: making friends Session Aim: To explore tips for making friends as young people prepare for secondary education Session Objectives: To help the young people learn new conversation skills. also so help them with starter conversations. Materials Required: Flipchart/Markers, Laptop, Pages / Ink Activities: 10 mins - Welcomes and Introductions - Young people are invited to share something positive that they have down since our last session with the aim of building confidence and communication skills 15 mins Energiser - Splat - Young people invited to make a circle with one person standing in the middle. The person in the middle goes around the circle pointing to various people, once they point at the person they shout 'splat' the person must duck with the people on either side reacting and also shouting splat. The person who reacts last is out, game continues until the last 2 remain and the game concludes with a 'shoot off' 20 Minutes - Group members are split in 2 and asked to navigate around the monopoly themed board which has 5 questions focusing on making friends. Young people are invited to feed back and give their responses to each question, how can they apply these techniques when they move into secondary school? 5 mins - Group discussion - Ask the group want makes a good conversation. invite young people to share their views on what makes a good conversation. 10 mins - Who are You? - Young people are invited to pair up with people they don't really speak to, and to find out a little more about each other. Young people are then invited to introduce the person and share some of the new things they found out about each other. 5 mins- Check Out Charlie - Young people are invited to give verbal feedback from the session as they leave to head back into their classroom



SESSION Date: 17th MaY2022 REVIEW Topic: making friends Session :2 How did Tonight's Session Go? Most of This session went really well, All the young people really engaged on all the activities and seemed to have a good understanding of ways to start conversations and some really good examples of tips they can use when looking to make new friends. Highlights of the Session Any Issues / Concerns, There was an altercation between 2 young people that To see some young people really open up and was dealt with very quickly. SESSION Date24th May 2022 PLAN Programme : New Beginnings Session number: 3 Youth Worker: Martin Gallagher + kevin Thompson Topic: Bullying Session Aim: To examine the various types of bullying, and how this can impact school experiences for young people Session Objectives: Young people will be aware of the various types of bullying and what to do if they notice themselves or others being bullied as they move into secondary school Materials Required: Flipchart/Markers, Laptop, Pages Activities: 10 Min utes - Welcomes and introductions - Young people invited to share something positive they have done since our last session with the aim of building confidence and communication skills. 10 Minutes - Energiser - Never have I ever- Circle game where each young person has 10 lives. Young people take turns in disclosing something they have never done i.e. swimming in the sea, if someone in the group has done the activity, then they lose a life. game concludes when last person with any lives left. 30 Minutes- Carousel - Timed activity with young people are asked to work in small groups and answer the questions on the flipchart. What is Bullying? What are the main types of bullying What would you do if you or someone you knew were being bullied 10 Minutes - Feedback from each group- explain to young people that all schools have a zero tolerance towards bullying and there is policies and procedures in place to help eradicate bullying from educational settings, so if anyone notices any form of bullying report it straight away to keep you and others safe. 10 MInutes - session evaluation - Young people are asked to reflect on todays session by listing one thing they learnt, how they felt, what they are walking away with and anything they didn't like.



SESSION Date: 24th May 2022 REVIEW Topic: Bullying Session :3 How did Tonight's Session Go? This session went really well, the young people were bit relived when we talked about each school having policies in place to protect young people from bullying but some young people realised that they have a role to play too, and trying to get young people out of the mindset that they are 'TOUTS' if they report bullying Highlights of the Session Any Issues / Concerns All young people seemed happy with the There wasn't any issues to report on today. session, there was good feedback and it is ' clear to see some of the young people realising that their time in primary school is coming to an end which is going to be tough for a lot of them. SESSION Date 7th June 2022 PLAN Programme : New Beginnings Session number: 4 Youth Worker: Martin Gallagher + kevin Thompson Topic: work load Session Aim: To explore tips for helping the young people to manage their work load. Session Objectives: to show the young people how the can manage work load with out getting overwhelmed with the amount of work they have to do. Materials Required: Flipchart/Markers, Laptop, Pages / Ink Activities: 10 Minutes - Welcomes and Introductions - Young people are invited to share something positive they have done since our last session. 10 min Icebreaker - lets bounce -basketball game were young people have to bounce the ball to the rhythm of the music. (eye of the tiger) 20 min get the young people to put down on paper all the things they will have to manage in evening and at weekends. Then have a conversation with the young people about want ways they can manage there loads. 15min ga 5min do a check out with the young people to see how they felt about the session and want they are taking away from it.



SESSION Date 14th June 2022 PLAN Programme : New Beginnings Session number: 25 Youth Worker: Martin Gallagher + kevin Thompson Topic: Evaluation Session Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of this programme against the expected outcomes and to ensure young people felt that the programme alleviated their concerns about moving into secondary school Session Objectives: Young people will complete an end of programme baseline Young people will complete a satisfaction survey Materials Required: Flipchart/Markers, Laptop, Pages Activities: 5 Minutes - Welcomes and Introductions - Young people invited to share something positive since our last session 10 Minutes - Baseline Questionnaire -Young people are invited to complete an end of programme questionnaire so we can measure the impact of the programme against the expected outcomes. 20 Minutes - Carousel - Young people invited to give feedback on the delivery of the programme, what went well, what didn't go well and what they learnt from participating on the programme. 10 Minutes- Satisfaction Survey- Young people are invited to give us feedback on how satisfied they were with the programme delivery from really satisfied, satisfied and not satisfied. 20 Minutes - Presentation of Certificates



PROJECT Date: 30th June 2022 REPORT Programme : New Beginnings Programme Youth Workers: Martin Gallagher Kevin Thompson Knowledge - Summary of Session Reviews: Overall feedback from this programme was all positive, apart from the altercation on week 2, there were no issues and feedback from young people and teachers was all positive. Skills - throughout the 6 week programme Values - we have seen a development in team work over the programme we have seen this group skills and communication skills and grow as they come to the realisation that increased awareness on the issues impacting some of their journey in education together their day to day lives. will come to an end at the end of the school Young people fully participated on each year. This group will commence a fresh start session and feedback was really positive and we hope this programme has equipped from young people and teachers the young people with the necessary tools to thrive through this transition into secondary education. Youth Work Outcomes - Baseline Questionnaire completed at start and end of programme indicate an increase in enhanced personal capabilities with 11% increase in young people looking forward to moving secondary education 27% increase in communication skills 20% increase in ability to make new friends Summary of Young People's Evaluations of overall programme - Each session was evaluated by young people and overall feedback indicates young people had a positive experience from participating on this new beginnings programme, and the programme covered the concerns highlighted on our first session.

Young Peoples Satisfaction with programme (Numbers) Not Satisfied Satisfied Very Satisfied 75% 25% Youth Worker Self-Reflection Strengths- This programme was delivered in partnership with Leafair community association and EA and we feel the partnmership went really well, we worked well together and this is the first time we have worked together so hopefully plenty of scope for future work together. Areas for Development - starting sooner, having set dates boxed off to minimise disruption due to the school calendar. Young People Considered for Case Study? Yes / No
