Relocation In 1989, Harris Institute opened in a 1,800 sq.ft. building at 296 King Street East in Toronto. In 1994, it relocated to a 15,000 sq.ft. industrial building at 118 Sherbourne Street that was designed in 1908 by Massey Hall’s architect George M. Miller. From Here, There and Everywhere Since 1989 international students have come from 142 countries. In 2017 students (pictured) came from Japan, France, England, Bermuda, Korea, Tanzania, Cuba, Scotland, Spain, Bahamas, Brazil, Mexico, Iran, US, India, Jordan, Colombia and China. Innovation Internationally acclaimed studio designer Martin Pilchner designed Harris Institute’s recording studios. He is a founding faculty member and the Associate Director of APP.

Participation Harris Institute has delivered innovative and experimental educational programs with a wide range of international and Canadian partners. Most Awarded Faculty Anywhere, Ever Harris Institute has the highest percentage of award-winning faculty of any school with over 50% having won awards for what they teach. It is unlikely any other school has even 10%. The Irish Are Coming CROSSFADER In 1997, The Crossfader Group was the first of six annual ‘Peace & Reconciliation’ programs for 20 young adults from conflicted areas in the North and South of Ireland funded by the International Fund for Ireland. They wrote and recorded the album ‘blah’.

Recognition Harris Institute ranked ‘best school of it’s kind’ in the 2020 ‘Media Arts Education Report’ for a 7th year. It was the only school outside of the US in Billboard’s ‘Top 11 Schools’ and was featured in Mix’s ‘Audio Education’s Finest’ and Billboard’s ‘Schools That Rock’. Another First Harris Institute is the only post-secondary school in North America to have achieved five 0% Student Loan Default Rates and a 90.91% ‘Employment Rate in The Field of Study’. AMP has achieved nine 0% Default Rates and APP has achieved seven. Scotland Here We Come In 2004 the first Harris grads earned BA and BSc degrees at UWS on full scholarships. Since then over 220 Harris and UWS students have benefited from the unique partnership.

Not Forgotten Former faculty who are now teaching in much higher education: Jack Richardson (Canada’s most honoured Producer), Dr. Eric McLuhan (acclaimed media theorist), Scott Richards (admired music executive), Ron Scribner (Canada’s pioneering booking agent), Richard Hahn (esteemed music attorney) and Doug Kirby (renowned booking agent). Contribution Since 1995 Harris Institute has donated its facilities annually for the Honey Jam Industry Workshops for emerging female musical artists. Four Unique Programs The Audio Production Program (APP) and the Arts Management Program (AMP) are 12 months in duration and Music Business Professional (MBP) is 20 months (APP+AMP). Harris International Program (HIP) features scholarships to earn degrees in Scotland. Political Correctness Policy In 2015 Harris Institute was the first post-secondary school in North America to introduce a comprehensive policy ensuring ‘free speech and the open exchange of ideas’.

Honoured In 2006 Harris Institute and Canadian Musician Magazine created the Domenic Troiano Guitar Awards in honour of the legendary Canadian guitarist. Nine guitarists received $43,500 over 5 years. Trustees included Alex Lifeson, Rik Emmett, and Kevin Breit. Domenic's Leslie, repurposed for guitar, is regularly used in the Harris Studio. Inspiration Harris Institute’s faculty working together for a common goal was the inspiration for the proposal to create the world’s first ‘music city’ on Toronto’s waterfront. Industry Builders The emphasis on entrepreneurism in the APP and AMP programs has helped Harris Alumni create 100’s of companies, many of which have become very successful. Expansion In 2007 the government of Barbados offered to fund HIWI, a waterfront Harris Institute campus east of Bridgetown to be designed by Toronto’s KPMB Architects with studios by Martin Pilchner. The global financial crisis of 2008 ended the initiative. More Innovation In 2006 Harris Institute partnered with Solid State Logic to install the groundbreaking SSL AWS 900 console. It was subsequently inducted into the ‘TEC Awards Hall of Fame’ and Is today the world’s leading pro audio console. Photo is SSL staff training Harris faculty.

‘It Was A Very Good Year’ In 2017 Harris Alumni and Faculty contributed to Leonard Cohen’s Memorial Tribute, Neil Young’s concert from Omemee, Shania Twain’s Grey Cup Show, Gord Downie’s JUNO winning Secret Path, The Weeknd’s #1 Starboy and OSCAR nominated Earned It, The Tragically Hip’s final concert film and Alessia Cara’s Platinum album Know It All. Imagination Internationally renowned visual artist MEDIA (Evond Blake) created a 23’ X 8’ masterful mural on the southwest wall of Harris Institute and incorporated the name of the school. Appreciation Harris students will be forever grateful for the 600+ scholarships with a total value of over $2.1M that made a difference in their lives.

Presentation KISS leader Gene Simmons presented his unique marketing concepts to Harris Institute management students at the Sony Centre in 2010. Celebration The celebration of the 15th anniversary of the unprecedented partnership with UWS included the announcement of an expansion enabling Harris students who complete both APP & AMP direct entry into Master’s Degree programs at UWS with partial scholarships. Donation Confidential Records, operated by students in the Arts Management Program and coordinated by faculty member Anne-Marie Smith, has donated the proceeds from over 100 album releases and showcase events to charities and non-profits.

Recognition In 2018, Harris Institute founder was awarded the Cashbox Canada Legacy Award for ‘Lifetime Contributions to the Canadian Music Industry’. Alumni Awarded Harris Alumni Awards co-founders Dan Broome and Jamie Porter presented Awards of Excellence for Audio, Music Industry and Education at the 30th Anniversary Party.

Master's Degrees In 2014 Harris Institute and the University of the West of Scotland expanded their unique 10-year-old partnership to enable double major Harris grads (APP + AMP) direct entry into MA programs in Sound Production, Songwriting, and Music Industry. 10 JUNO’s Although it may never happen again, Harris Alumni won 10 major 2017 JUNO Awards including Rock Album of the Year, Single, Group, R&B Album, Pop Album, Blues Album, Songwriter, Producer, Adult Alternative Album and Country Album of the Year. Grad Delivers Baby Alumni Jamie Porter delivered his baby grand Kawai piano in 2014. The donation is in memory of his mother Jill. It was used by Stephan Moccio, who Jamie has managed since 1997, in ‘A New Day’ (Celine Dion) and ‘Wrecking Ball’ (Miley Cyrus).

Exhibition In 2005 Harris faculty contributed to the design concept for M3 - Metronome Music Museum, featuring interactive exhibits celebrating Canadian musical artists from all eras, genres and regions of Canada. 3D jukebox by Anyez Cheung (AMP '97). Another Championship Season Harris Alumni have won over 450 music, film and television industry awards including Grammys, Oscars, JUNOs, Emmys, Canadian Screen, CCMA, ASCAP and SOCAN Awards. FYI Music News A feature story by FYI Editor David Farrell starts with, “If we are to measure a person by their achievements, Harris Institute's founder and president, John Harris, has to be to be one of the Canadian music industry’s most underrated success stories past or present”.

Future Milestones A proposed Harris Institute South Africa (HISA), with the participation of countries in the 16 member Southern African Development Community (SADC), will be located in a 65,000 sq. ft. building in central Johannesburg that includes the renowned DownTown Studios where numerous music luminaries have recorded. The first-of-its-kind program, taught in part by visiting international experts, will focus on the new music industry, audio production fundamentals and global music marketing with an emphasis on entrepreneurial aspects. Confidential's 25th Confidential Records, the non-profit music company operated by students in the Arts Management Program, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022 with a gala awards event honouring past participants and contributors.
