2022 COMMUNITY REPORT Sunshine Dreamer Hiam and her brother Watching Disney on Ice was the first time she got to enjoy a night of entertainment with her whole family together.

MESSAGE FROM SUNSHINE A Message From Our President & CEO For the past 35 years, The Sunshine Foundation of Canada has transformed the lives of thousands of children and youth across Canada living with severe physical disabilities, by giving them an opportunity to see a brighter, more hopeful, and engaged future. During this time, we have fulfilled more than 8,800 dream experiences and coordinated 64 Sunshine DreamLifts, changing the trajectory of these young lives. Thank you so much for being part of our efforts. Last year we worked with 64 children and youth across the country to fulfill their dreams and inspire them to see a future full of possibility, eliminating our waitlist. This year we are excited to provide some amazing updates: • As we emerge from pandemic restrictions, we have opened intake again and are actively certifying referral partners across the country who help us connect with our program participants. • We have launched our first five-year $10M Comprehensive Campaign to raise the necessary funds to increase intake four-fold—4X as many lives will be changed! • We have designed a new peer-to-peer national fundraising event, Breaking Barriers, and continue to work with our communities on many third-party fundraising events. • We have welcomed two wonderful new additions to our National Board of Directors, helping us guide the future of Sunshine. Without the involvement of Sunshine, many young people see themselves as having a disability first and being a societal contributor second. Sunshine shifts that paradigm and helps them gain confidence and see themselves differently as someone who can vs. someone who can’t. Results of our programs include an increase in confidence, resilience, a willingness to try new things, and a positive outlook that continues to fuel them through life’s challenges. In some cases, their dream was the catalyst into friendships, a potential career, or advancing their education. These dreamers become positive examples and leaders to others, as to what is possible. A recent Deloitte study indicated that enabling a diverse and future ready workforce is critical to a thriving society in 2030. Specifically, 500,000 Canadians with disabilities will be added to the workforce. It is incumbent on all Canadians to recognize we have an under-utilized segment of the population that can and want to do more. Sunshine programs are actively acting on this gap. Sunshine is working to change lives by empowering young people in the disability sector. Sunshine is excited for all the impactful projects that we are working on this year, all thanks to you and your support. With gratitude, Nancy Sutherland

SUNSHINE DREAMS Life-Changing Sunshine Dreams Our Sunshine Dream Programs helps young people gain confidence and see themselves differently as someone who can vs. someone who can’t. We are changing lives by working to empower young people living with severe physical disabilities see a future of possibility and contribution.  Sunshine alumni, medical professionals, families, and even communities are impacted by a Sunshine Dream. They tell us that these experiences are transformative and often include an increase in confidence, resilience, a willingness to try new things, and a positive outlook that continues to fuel young people through life’s challenges. Viewing the selection of dream stories below, you’ll find that these experiences with Sunshine mark just the start of a greater future ahead for a young person. Karissa is Excited to Break Barriers Karissa’s all-terrain wheelchair has removed an existing barrier for her. “She struggles with some mental health challenges and having this just kind of sparks some excitement and joy for her. It takes away some of these feelings of inadequacy and apprehension about keeping up and getting to where she needs to go. It's got her more excited about trying new things.” – Karissa’s mom, Asia. Pierce’s Air Traffic Aspirations Growing up, Pierce loved everything to do with airports and dreamed of becoming an air traffic controller. He wanted to learn about the differences of the role around the world and learn how one day, he could work in a control tower while living with a spinal cord injury. Sunshine arranged calls with air traffic specialists worldwide, which inspired him to apply to NAV Canada and has motivated him to keep in shape for recruitment.

SUNSHINE DREAMS Social Connections Make Waves for Dominic Dominic’s caregivers were concerned about him becoming depressed. The pandemic had stripped him of all of his social activities. But on his Sunshine Dream day, everything began to change. \"Dominic got to gel with his friends that he invited on the water slide experience, and they bonded like they never had before. It was a heart-warming experience for the entire community; from the staff, to Dominic and his family. Anyone that was involved in this dream, had their lives impacted in a positive way. It made everyone feel better and it was beautiful.\" – Karen, Dominic’s caregiver. More Than a Puppy for Marielle Before her dream, Marielle was struggling to manage her frustrations and feel motivated in life. Her new dog, Baloo, brought her positivity, a sense of calm, and an opportunity to interact with her community. With new responsibilities, she shares, “I have more confidence in myself and genuinely like myself more. Thank you so much for doing this for me and my life. I have my best friend and now just want the best for him too.” Brayden Gains Muscles and Motivation Brayden's life-changing dream gave him independence, confidence, and motivation to continue pursuing his passions. He will soon be able to drive to and from the gym and his newfound friendships with pro-bodybuilders will help him get ready for his next competition. “I was anxious about my ability and the cost of driving lessons. I wouldn’t have overcome that without your help. It's gonna take me further not only in body building, but in life.” Personalization Inspires Raena’s Creativity Once her bedroom was painted and the furniture was in place, she was excited to show off her new space – which became an extension of her personality. She now has the confidence to invite her friends to sleep over and can’t wait to come from school each day to chill out in her favourite place. Thanks to the experience working with Sunshine, Raena is inspired to learn more about fashion and interior design.
