2019 COMMUNITY REPORT The Sunshine Foundation of Canada is a national charitable organization that makes dreams come true for children living with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses.

MESSAGE FROM SUNSHINE A message from our CEO, Nancy Sutherland Dear Friend of Sunshine, While this report is a backward glance through the rear-view mirror at our impact and results in 2019, as I write this, we are already in the fourth month of 2020. The global pandemic has arisen rapidly, dramatically changing all aspects of life. Initially, we cancelled all dream programming that involved travel of any kind. And now, we are looking forward through the windshield at our programs and our funding opportunities for the remainder of 2020 and beyond. I am happy to say that we are still completing Sunshine Dreams for many youth, such as bedroom makeovers, technology to connect with friends, and adapted sports equipment to stay active and reach their goals. We have created a new, virtual event for June, The Great Canadian Splash for Kids. And we continue to work with our donors and partners whose unwavering support has been truly inspiring. As an organization that exists to promote and facilitate positivity, we have rallied and will continue to be creative and to act with courage. Our dreamers are at a higher risk than most for anxiety, depression and isolation at the best of times. They really need us now, more than ever. Thank you for your past support. New Opportunities Sing True for Maddy When I walked into London’s Country 104 Radio Station last summer, I was walking into the final piece of my Sunshine dream come true. I was surrounded by my family as I met my favourite radio host and sat down for a live interview. This was the moment that would change me forever. At the age of 7, I developed macular dystrophy, a severe low vision condition. For me, this meant that I would learn to take on challenges in my own way. As I grew up, I discovered my passion for country music. But I didn’t know how to take it any further. I was confronted with a dream to become a country singer and thanks to Sunshine and supporters like you, you helped me take the next step. Now almost a year later, I’m proud to say that my dream carries on and my song continues to play on more radio stations. Thank you for giving me the gift of confidence and belief in new possibilities. Forever grateful, Maddy McKenzie

SUNSHINE DREAM PROGRAMS Sunshine Dream Programs Sunshine has two dream programs that help change the lives of kids and youth: A Sunshine Dream is as unique as the child who dreamed it. From meeting a hero to having an elephant in your backyard, these dreams are a launching pad to realizing one’s greatest abilities. A Sunshine DreamLift is a whirlwind adventure that transports a plane full of kids to Disney and back in one day. It’s an unforgettable experience that connects kids to friends, new possibilities, and a taste of independence away from parents. It’s a day where kids can just be kids! Sunshine DreamLift Vancouver: 20 hours, 400 lives On December 11th, 2019 Sunshine DreamLift kids Dean and Walker were ready for their adventure to Disney along with their volunteer Marco. But why Marco? He lives with a severe physical disability just like the kids in his group. Marco took part in a Sunshine DreamLift as a child and says it impacted his life. Now a motivational speaker and accessibility consultant in Vancouver, he shares his belief that positivity has power to change others’ perceptions and was able to share this with his new buddies. These two boys, ages 7 and 9, were at a critical stage in their development. Sunshine knew that pairing them with a positive role model like Marco and kids with interests just like them would give them the confidence boost they needed to lead a brighter future. The day at Disney was seamless. The boys had the opportunity to take charge and lead their day. “To show the boys that I was an adult with a disability and together we could go to Disney independently, experience the rides we wanted, and just enjoy time where we weren’t thinking about how we were going to make things happen, brought out a confidence in both boys that I’ll never forget.” - Marco. Thanks to supporters like you, the futures of the kids, their families, and the community is enriched with new possibilities and a brighter future. With your help, Dean, Walker, and even Marco’s lives have been changed. Thank you! Right now we are working on plans for the next Sunshine DreamLift.
