INTRODUCTION 5 Tourism Industry Scenario Tourism industry is one of the main contributor to the world economy the recent growth trends of the industry has grabbed all the attention towards the industry. The present scenario of the industry is estimated by economic contribution, tourist arrivals, foreign exchange earnings, countries rankings, employment creation, benefit to society and environment at large, alongside the infrastructural development with Govt initiatives and policies. PRESENT SCENARIO OF THE 6 TOURISM INDUSTRY: GLOBAL The global tourism industry has shown a growth of 5% in tourist arrivals in the year 2018. UNWTO has recorded International tourist arrivals as 1.4 billion. The number of tourist arrivals are two years ahead compared to forecasts. During the same year total international tourism exports grew by 4 % recording an international export of 1.7 trillion US dollars. 2018 is the 9th consecutive year of sustained growth of global tourism industry. UNWTO also states that a favorable and strong economic environment is the key to the growth of tourism. Global Tourism Regions Scenario 13 Europe Leads the growth in 2018 by having 51% share (710 million) of International tourist arrivals and 39% share (570 billion USD) of International tourism receipts. Followed by Asia Pacific having 25% share (348 million) of International tourist arrivals and 30% share (435 billion USD) of International tourism receipts. Next in the list is America having 15% share (216 million) of International tourist arrivals and 23% share (334 billion USD) of International tourism receipts. While Africa shares 5% (67 million) of International tourist arrivals and 3% share (38 billion USD) of International tourism receipts. Government Initiatives Ministry of Tourism launches Audio Guide facility App called Audio Odigos for 12 sites of India (including 25 iconic sites). Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi urged people to visit 15 domestic tourist destinations India by 2022. Statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, also known as ‘Statue of Unity’, was inaugurated in October 2018. It is the highest standing statue in the world at a height of 182 metre. It is expected to boost the tourism sector in the country and put India on the world tourism map. The Government of India is working to achieve 1 per cent share in world's international tourist arrivals by 2020 and 2 per cent share by 2025. Government Initiatives 26 Under budget 2019-20, government introduced a Tax Refund for Tourists (TRT) scheme like in countries such as Singapore to encourage tourists to spend more in India and boost tourism. Under budget 2019-20, the government allotted Rs 1,160 crore (US$ 160.78 million) for development of tourist circuits under Swadesh Darshan. Under Union Budget 2019-20, US$ 82.27 million was allocated for promotion & publicity of various programmes & schemes of the Tourism ministry. In September 2019, Japan joins a band of Asian countries, including Taiwan and Korea among others to enter into the Indian tourism market. PRESENT SCENARIO OF THE TOURISM INDUSTRY: 28 REGIONAL (Punjab) Deriving its name from five full-bodied rivers–Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Jhelum, and Chenab–which flow through its vast plains, Punjab is representative of abundant things. Located on the north-western edge of India, it is one of the smaller albeit prosperous states of the nation, and home to a lively, hospitable and dynamic people. Widely acknowledged as the cradle of civilization, it is a land of ethnic and religious diversity, having borne and shaped a number of religious movements that include Sikhism, Buddhism and Sufism. The Punjabi language, too, finds its origin in the Indo-European linguistic family that includes Persian and Latin.
