7 Types of Assertiveness 1. Non- Assertive Behavior: Characteristics of non assertive behaviour include not expressing feelings, needs, and ideas; ignoring personal rights; and allowing others to infringe upon them. Non assertive behaviour is usually emotionally dishonest, indirect, inhibited, and self-denying. 2. Assertive Behavior: Characteristics of assertive behaviour include expressing your feelings, needs, ideas, and rights in ways that don’t violate the rights of others. Assertive behaviour is usually honest, direct, expressive, spontaneous, and self-enhancing. Assertive persons make their own choices, are confident, and feel good about themselves while being assertive and afterward. 3. Aggressive Behavior: Characteristics of aggressive behaviour include expressing your feelings, needs, and ideas at the expense of others. Aggressive persons stand up for their rights, but ignore the rights of others; they may dominate or humiliate other people. 12 Techniques in Assertiveness Training 1. Broken Record: Refers to simply repeating requests or refusal every time one encounters resistance. The key in this approach is resistance. A disadvantage would include that if resistance continues, the requests may lose power every time it is repeated. It requests are repeated too often, it may negatively impact the authority of words. 2. Fogging: Consists of finding some limited truth to agree with in what an antagonist is saying. More specially one can agree in part or agree in principle. Fogging may be a helpful technique if people are behaving in a very manipulative or aggressive method. Fogging involves accepting with any truth that will be contained within statements, though critical. By not responding with in the expected method, indifferent words by being defensive or disputative, the other person will cease confrontation because the desire isn’t being achieved.
