Amazon S3 uses the same scalable storage infrastructure that Amazon.com uses to run its global e- commerce network. Amazon S3 can be employed to store any type of object, which allows for uses like storage for Internet applications, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, data archives, data lakes for analytics, and hybrid cloud storage. S3 offers industry-leading scalability, data availability, security, and performance. Customers of all sizes and industries can use Amazon S3 to store and protect any amount of data for a range of use cases, such as data lakes, websites, mobile applications, backup and restore, archive, enterprise applications, IoT devices, and big data analytics. Amazon S3 provides management features so that you can optimize, organize, and configure access to your data to meet your specific business, organizational, and compliance requirements. AWS Fundamentals: AWS Simple Storage Service 4.3 Key features of Amazon S3 Data Management: Amazon S3 offers a range of storage classes designed for different use cases. For example, you can store mission-critical production data in S3 Standard for frequent access, save costs by storing infrequently accessed data in S3 Standard. We can use to manage costs, meet regulatory requirements, reduce latency, and save multiple distinct copies of your data for compliance requirements. Data protection: Amazon S3 provides a highly durable storage infrastructure designed for mission-critical and primary data storage. S3 Standard, S3 Intelligent-Tiering, S3 Standard- IA, S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval, and S3 Glacier Deep Archive redundantly store objects on multiple devices across a minimum of three Availability Zones in an AWS Region. Ease of use: Amazon S3 is easy-to-use object storage with a simple web service interface that you can use to store and retrieve any amount of data from anywhere on the web. Security: Store your data in Amazon S3 and secure it from unauthorized access with encryption features and access management tools. S3 is the only object storage service that allows you to block public access to all of your objects at the bucket or the account level with S3 Block Public Access. Event Notification: Amazon S3 Event Notifications feature to receive notifications when certain events happen in your S3 bucket. To enable notifications, add a notification configuration that identifies the events that you want Amazon S3 to publish. Make sure that it also identifies the destinations where you want Amazon S3 to send the notifications. You store this configuration in the notification subresource that's associated with a bucket. 4.4 History of AWS S3 Amazon Web Services introduced Amazon S3 in 2006. Amazon S3 is reported to store more than 100 trillion objects as of March 2021. In November 2017 AWS added default encryption capabilities at bucket level. 4.5 How Amazon S3 works Amazon S3 is an object storage service that stores data as objects within buckets. An object is a file and any metadata that describes the file. A bucket is a container for objects. Following are the process about how an Amazon S3 works: 1. Create a Bucket to store your data. You can choose a Region where your bucket and object(s) reside to optimize latency, minimize costs, or address regulatory requirements. Page 2 of 5 All Rights Reserved. Vol. TLE001/03-2022

AWS Fundamentals: AWS Simple Storage Service 2. Upload Objects to your Bucket. Your data is durably stored and backed by the AmazonS3 Service Level Agreement. 1. Optionally, set access controls. You can grants others access to your data fromanywhere in the world. 4. Create buckets, upload objects, and set access controls using the AWS ManagementConsole. 5. The console provides a point-and-click web-based interface for accessing and managing all of your Amazon S3 resources. 6. The Amazon S3 Getting Started Guide shows you how to start using Amazon S3 from the console. Developers building applications can use the AWS SDK for .NET, the AWS SDKfor Java. 4.6 Amazon S3 classes Amazon S3 offers four different storage classes that offer different levels of durability, availability, and performance requirements. • Amazon S3 Standard is the default class. • Amazon S3 Standard Infrequent Access (IA) is designed for less frequently accessed data. Typical use cases are backup and disaster recovery solutions. Page 3 of 5 All Rights Reserved. Vol. TLE001/03-2022

AWS Fundamentals: AWS Simple Storage Service • Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access is designed for data that is not often needed but when required, needs to be accessed rapidly. Data is stored in one zone and if that zone is destroyed, all data is lost. • Amazon Glacier is designed for long-term storage of data that is infrequently accessed and where retrieval latency of minutes or hours is acceptable. \"Glacier Deep Archive\" is an alternative with retrieval time of at least 12 hours, but 1/4th the price. It is intended as an alternative to magnetic tape libraries, and is designed for long term retention of data for 7 to 10 years. 4.7 Summary • Amazon Simple Storage Service is a service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that provides object storage through a web service interface • Amazon S3 provides a highly durable storage infrastructure designed for mission-critical and primary data storage • Amazon S3 Event Notifications feature to receive notifications when certain events happen in your S3 bucket • Amazon S3 is an object storage service that stores data as objects within buckets • Amazon S3 offers four different storage classes that offer different levels of durability, availability, and performance requirements 4.8 Glossary Infrastructure: the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities Scalability: the capacity to be changed in size or scale Configuration: an arrangement of parts or elements in a particular form, figure, or combination 4.9 References • Amazon Referral Link: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/Welcome.html • Wikipedia Referral Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_S3 Page 4 of 5 All Rights Reserved.
