Source Monitor - Allows you to make adjustments to individual clips . 3. Program Monitor - Allows you to view your project as it plays. 4. Timeline Panel - Video clips and other assets are placed on the Timeline and can then be rearranged, layered, trimmed, and edited in multiple ways. An asset is not part of a movie until it is placed on the Timeline. 5. Tools Panel - Holds tools that can be used to edit a video or audio clipthat has been placed on the Timeline. Each of the panels also has a panel menu. The panel menu icon is located on each panel’s tab. The panel menus give us additional options for working with a specific panel, and the menu button only displays when a specific tab is active. Understanding the tools panel Art E-Magazine | 42
All of our tools can be found in our Tools Panel, and most tools can be accessed with hotkeys. Some tool icons are drop-downs (look for the arrowhead in the lower-right corner of the icon to access everything) • The Selection tool allows you to select and move (unlocked) clips in the timeline. It can also be used to trim clips by clicking and dragging on the end of a clip. • The Track Select Forward tool allows you to select all (unlocked) clips after your selection. This is useful for making major changes in your edit. • The Ripple Edit is a trim tool used to trim a clip and “ripple” the rest of the clips in the timeline. • The Rolling Edit tool allows you to extend a clip into an adjacent clip by overlapping. • The Rate Stretch tool edits a clip by adjusting the speed of the clip. • The Blade tool allows you to split a clip wherever you click. • The Slip tool allows you to maintain a clip’s duration, but change which part of the source is being displayed. • Slide tool moves a clip while trimming and extending adjacent clips to compensate for the move. • Pen tool is used to draw keyframes in the timeline, or add points to an effect’s mask. • Rectangle and Ellipse tools are used to create a new motion graphic layer. • Hand tool can be used to drag the timeline or Source/Program Monitor viewport around. • Zoom tool is used to zoom into parts of the timeline. • Type tool can be used to add a new text layer. 43 | Art E-Magazine

Symbols & Tweens In animation, tweening is short for in-betweening, which is the process of drawing the frames that transition one keyframe or major pose to another. In Adobe Animate, tweening refers to the several automated processes of creating those in-betweens. Symbols are really the foundation of interactive project development. They help keep file size down, aid in organization and allow you to use ActionScript to manipulate their appearance. Saving and Exporting Files Before using any of our content on public platforms, we first need to export it to a usable format. Animate allows us to export single images, animated GIFs, video files, and more. What we’re going to be doing is looking in the File menu and here we can see the export options under Export.
