A slave named Androcles once escaped from his master and fled to the forest. As he was wandering about there he came upon a lion lying down moaning and groaning. ทาสคนหนึ่งมีนามว่า อันโดรเคิลส์ ครั้งหนึ่งเคยหนีเข้าไปหลบอยู่ในป่า ในขณะที่เขาเดินเตร่ไปมาอยู่แถวนั้น เขาได้ไปพบกับสิงโตตัวหนึ่งกำลัง นอนร้องครวญครางอยู่

Soon the lion was let loose from his den and rushed bounding and roaring toward its victim, but as soon as he come near to Androcles he recognized his friend, and fawned upon him, and licked his hands like a friendly dog. อันโดรเคิลส์ได้ถูกนำออกมาที่กลางสังเวียน ขณะนั้นสิงโต ก็ถูกปล่อยออก มาจากคอกที่ขังไว้ มันวิ่งออกมาในสนามพร้อมกับคำรามใส่เหยื่อของมัน แต่เมื่อมันได้เข้ามาใกล้อันโดรเคิลส์ มันก็จำสหายเก่าของมันได้ มันจึง กระดิกหางเข้าคลอเคลีย และเลียมือของเขาเหมือนหมาที่เป็นเพื่อนกัน
