Navigate to the drive you have saved your image in, click it and choose Open. 2. If asked whether you should convert to RGB working space, accept and choose Convert. Image banner in GIMP | An overview 3. Ensure you can see the tool options by clicking Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options. A little dialog box will appear as you click on any tool in the toolbar with further options about using this tool. 4. We will now crop the image to select an area we will use in our banner and at the same time resize the image. In this project the banner has got a width of 960 pixels and a height of 200 pixels. Please select the crop tool from the toolbar and note the options that appear as you click it. ALIA_PD_Sep2014_v1 3
Image banner in GIMP | An overview 5. In the tool options dialog box check the box for Fixed and from the drop-‐down menu choose Size. Then enter the dimensions as 960x200. 6. As you draw the crop area in your picture, note that the crop remains constrained to the dimensions you have specified above. When you are happy with your crop selection, press Enter. Image banner in GIMP | An overview 7. Choose the text tool from the toolbar and type the name of the institute on your banner. 8. Adjust the font, colour and size as you wish. I will sample the colour of the red leaves using Adobe Kuler and use it as my font colour. ALIA_PD_Sep2014_v1 5
Image banner in GIMP | An overview 9. Highlight the text and click in the colour picker area to launch the Text Color dialog box. Copy the hex value from Kuler and type it in the HTML notation area of the Text Color dialog box. Click OK. Colour picker 7. From the file menu choose Save. Image banner in GIMP | An overview 8. Finally save your composition in an image file format, such as .jpg, .png or .gif. In this case we will choose .jpg. From the File menu choose Export and type the jpg file extension behind the name of the image. Click Export. 9. The Export image as jpg dialog box will appear. Check the Show preview in image window option. This will enable you to preview your image as you choose a quality. The aim is to compromise the quality as little as possible while bringing the file size down as much as possible. The preview window will give you information about your file size as you adjust the quality setting. With a quality setting of 55 I was able to reduce the file size to 46 Kb. 10.
