HOW TO DEVELOP A COMPETENCE? For everything we are going to learn, we go through levels, where each level represents our learning state. To develop a competency it is necessary to go through all stages of learning. The difference between someone who has studied professional makeup and learned and one that has studied and has not learned is not in the gift, the ease or any personal privilege, but because one has learned correctly and the other hasn’t. 1. Unconscious incompetence - it’s when the one doesn’t know that he doesn’t know. It is at this stage that many find themselves, it is the most critical level because without the awareness of what they do not know, they will not be able to seek the necessary information. It is literally being on the wrong path and not even realizing it. It is impossible to have any result at this level. 2. Conscious incompetence - it’s when the one knows that he doesn’t know. The success that someone can have is not linked to a “supernatural gift” or “a divine gift” I do believe in gifts, vocation, aptitude etc. But, if you take this as a maxim, you will be relinquishing the responsibility of building your success and developing your skills because you simply believe that you don’t have a divine gift, for example. The fact is that some found a path of success alone through sheer trial and error or because at some point they realized that something needed to be changed and committed to that change. From 19 to 25 years old I learned the basics of makeup that is taught in traditional schools and courses, let’s say that’s the tip of the iceberg. This “way of learning” encompasses some pillars that, if put into practice, will ensure your success in the journey of developing your competence. Are they: Immersion in content Knowledge comes before skill Enthusiasm Persistence Performance management Immersion in content It’s necessary to create an environment of immersion in the content you want to learn. That is, if you’re looking to develop a new skill, (be a makeup artist) or go to the next level, you will need to be in contact with this knowledge as long as possible. Remember that I mentioned the pillars of skills development? I know that reading can sometimes be a challenge, I myself spent many years of my life wanting to read several books, but because I was a very visual person I found those white pages full of boring letters, but when I started to read and imagine what I was reading as a visual and colorful scene, as if it were a film, it became much more interesting. I also discovered that the biggest mistake that people make when they can’t read books, is that they want to read too much pages in one day, or finish the book fast. This doesn’t work most of the time, because there are large books of 200, 300 pages or even more and if you go with the “8 or 80” mentality you will not be able to develop the reading habit, however if you only read half an hour per day, or in the morning or at night, before going to sleep, it is very likely that you will be able to read one book a week and four books a month depending on the size.
