‘NATSUKAHII’ 07 a sculpture by jeff elings '88 Jeff Elings '88 is a local artist whose sculptures have twice been displayed publicly in Santa Barbara County Arts & Culture’s ‘State of the Art’ (Igiyagi in 2006, Gooto in 2008). He worked at Santa Barbara City College under Ed Inks, where he met his beautiful wife, Eunju. His background in engineering informs a surreal post-industrial style mar rying organic forms with complex welded structures, often in stainless steel. This sculpture is called Natsukashii, which loosely translates to \"Looking back beauty.\" Natsukashii – which derives from the verb “natsuku” and means “to keep close and become fond of” – indicates joy and gratitude for the past rather than a desire to return to it. In Japan, natsukashii is a reminder that you are fortunate to have had the experiences you’ve had in life. The fact that you cannot return to those experiences makes them all the more poignant. Natsukashii is a collaborative piece with Gabo, and is the first piece crafted from the art collective Rancho Relaxo Estudio. Generously donated by Jeff Elings '88
