In early 1961, less than a year after the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered to assist the new Republic in its first steps. The Government of Cyprus, particularly the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, believed a study of the potential for tourism on the island would be of great help to the Republic. Once the project’s framework was established, the French Societe Centrale d’Equipment du Territoire (SCET) was chosen to implement the study. French architect Eugene Beaudouin, member of the French Institute and Head of University of Geneva’s School of Architecture, was nominated to direct the project. Beaudouin, in turn, selected two of his former students to carry out the mission: Manuel Baud-Bovy, a Swiss architect (appointed as head of the mission) and Aristea Tzanou, a Greek architect.
