NFCPT NEWSLETTER - January - March 2022 3

EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Readers With utmost welcome, we are bringing you the fourth quarter Trust News external newsletter for the 2021/22 financial year to keep you updated with the latest activities, programmes, and initiatives of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT). This quarter has been nothing but extraordinary and will be remembered in many ways as The Trust significantly achieved its strategic targets. We are hopeful that you will find this peace of reading resourceful and informing. Follow us on social media and refer to our website for up-to-date, relevant updates on our comprehensive business network. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] or through our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Twitter) for comments or suggestions Mr De Wet Siluka Public Relations Officer 4 NFCPT NEWSLETTER - January - March 2022

CEO’S MESSAGE The 2021/22 financial year was remarkably significant for The Trust, as we witnessed a substantial growing demand for our fish and fish products across the country. This demand subsequently increased our revenue generation. All credit is bestowed upon you all. The fish distribution throughout our fish shops and regional promotions remains significant to our operations. Therefore, we pursue the industry partners in the fishing sector, SMEs, retailers, and individuals who contribute to the value chain in the supply of fish to continue contributing significantly to this strategic focus. Awareness and promotion At the core of the work we do is to educate the nation on the nutritional value of fish and various ways of preparing it while improving the accessibility of fish to all regions of the country by setting up retail fish shops. The awareness initiative was done through the educational seminar conducted in Gobabis. In addition, fish promotions and educational campaigns were undertaken in Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa, //Karas, Omusati Omaheke, and Zambezi regions. While most of our promotional activities during the year focused on the areas where fish is less known and eaten, we also promote fish consumption in the Zambezi Region, where fish is accepted as part of the daily diet. The Trust also launched the educational fish consumption advertising campaign in May 2021. The campaign aimed to create better consumer awareness of the benefits of eating fish and how to prepare well and cook it properly through radio live reads, billboards, TV cooking demonstrations, and bulk SMS. In addition to brand recognition and increasing market awareness of the brand, the campaign also promoted the contribution of fish to food security, income generation, and the consumption of fish, particularly by vulnerable or food-insecure groups in our society. Annual per capita consumption target The Trust and stakeholders in the fishing industry were instrumental in increasing the consumption of fish per person from only 4 kg per person at Independence to 16.59 per person at the end of March 2021. As informed by Government, our target is to attain a 20.4 kg per capita fish consumption per person, which is the current world average. Finally, it will be remiss if I do not remind fellow Namibians about our dream for Namibia to be a fish-eating nation. To attain this dream, we must collectively embrace the culture of consuming fish (either from our Atlantic Ocean or from our freshwater bodies). Therefore, let us consume more fish to derive the nutritional and healthy values and income generation, employment creation, and poverty alleviation benefits that fish can offer, thus making Namibia a “fish-eating nation”.
