> > > CSuhseteasineability CEFLEX Initiative Flexible Packaging: Working Towards a Circular Economy CEFLEX is a collaborative project of about 50 European companies representing the entire value chain of flexible packaging. Wipak joined the project in early 2017 and is now working with these companies towards the common goal of increasing the collection and recycling of flexible packaging by 2025. This will take “end of life” technologies and processes, which deliver the best economic, technical and environmental outcome for a circular economy, into account. To achieve its goal, the Ceflex project intends to develop Euro pean-wide guidelines for flexible packaging and an “end of cycle” infrastructure by 2020, which will enable used packs to be collected, sorted and recycled. These guidelines are intended to influe nce decisions during the early stages of package design e.g. which materials are recyclable and which materials could potential- ly be substituted. Ceflex will also identify technologies, infrastruc- ture, business models and markets for recycled material. Susan Janssen, Sustainability Manager at Wipak, said: “The initiati- ve is not only relevant to the packaging producer, but it encoura- ges collaboration among all companies that are part of the supply chain to find common solutions – from raw material producers, to manufacturers of packaging and consumer products, and waste management and recycling companies.” A dditional information: www.ceflex.eu C ontact: Susan Janssen [email protected] – 16

SustainCahbeielistey > > >Myth/ Perception Flexible packaging cannot be recycled. Flexible packaging is not relevant in a circular economy, as it is assumed that it is not recyclable. The environmental impact of packaged food is mostly due to the packaging. Flexible packaging isa cause of land and marine litter. Flexible packaging is a waste of resources. Reality Flexible packaging is increasingly recycled, especially in countries where it is collected. Flexible packaging adds valuein a circular economy through very efficient use of materials and energy resources. The environmental impact of flexible packaging is typically 5 to 10 times less than the food it protects. When flexible packaging is not collected, there is a risk that it might leak into nature. Collection of flexible packaging waste can significantly reduce the risk of it becoming land and marine litter. With flexible packaging, customized barrier properties and appropriate portioning reduces the risk of food waste thus saving many resources. WePack – 17
