Leçon – 3: Mon pays, France Adjectives • Like in English, adjectives serve the same purpose in French as well. But they are very different with respect with the English adjectives. Characteristics of French adjectives: 1. Modify noun. 2. Must agree in gender and number with the nouns. 3. Usually follow nouns. 4. May be modified by adverbs. Gender and number of French adjectives: • English adjectives have a single form, but in French they can have upto 4 forms, according to the gender and the number of the nouns they modify; Masculine singular Masculine plural Feminine singular Feminine plural • Masculine singular is the default form, to which the feminine or plural endings are added. Par exemple: 1. Le petit verre Les petits verres 2. La petite tasse Les petites tasses • When a default form of adjective ends in s or x, the masculine singular and plural forms are as follows; Par exemple: 1. Il est surpris Ils sont surpris 2. Elle est surprise Elles sont surprises

• When the default form of the adjectives end in a, e, or o then it’s as follows; Par exemple : 1. Un homme calme Des hommes calmes 2. Une femme calme Des femmes calmes Répondez aux questions 1.) Nommez les pays voisins de la France. → Les pays voisins de la France sont : la Belgique, l’Angleterre, l’Allemagne, La Suisse, l’Italie et l’Espagne. 2.) Nommez deux fromage français. → Les deux fromages français sont : le Camembert et le Brie. 3.) Nommez deux fleuves français. → Les deux fleuves français sont : la Seine et la Rhin. 4.) Nommez deux montagnes en France. → Les deux montagnes en France sont : les Pyrénées et les Alpes.
