Visit your nearest Letshego access point today or call us on 061 321 6690-4 for more information. Leadership on regional, town and village level is already eroded and under siege of lost credibility, while an avalanche of unchecked social media platforms made facts a new commodity. Popular leaders are now seemingly afraid of their own shadow and try to avoid any attention lest they become targets of smear campaigns, camps or factions. It is painful to observe leaders in exile in their own parties and communities, because they cannot trust anybody or can call someone a friend. Factions and political competition are a constitutional obligation as any citizen can be mobilised and any association formed to influence government policy. To present differences of choice as a crime is the best reason to be rejected from any position of authority and responsibility. If Namibians are wrong they will be relieved, but they must be convinced. This is not the case when leaders gossip to find each other guilty and cast suspicion on each other and every action. They might be able to fool some of their comrades some of the time, while they search for a place that is left to plunge in their daggers of character assassination. It must only be the most ignorant or the most selfish that cannot see that the current campaigns are not even vaguely resembling democracy or comradeship. The recent development in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Angola should be a warning to those that act as if they are accountable to no one. What Namibians should fear is that they might win the political party war, by losing the respect and dignity that people should have and others deserve. As it stands, Namibians are not witnessing a democratic competition, but a war of political survival and a war for influence. Namibians cannot help but to wonder what happened to the nice guys in Namibian politics. Unfortunately, with the Swapo congress still more than two months away, the nation must hold its breath because all signs are there that it will get worse before it gets better. The massive support that Swapo and Dr Geingob rallied in the elections raised the expectations of the supporters, but it also raised the bitterness of losers. Democracy is best suited for those that listen rather than speak. If it is true of Namibia it will be true for the ruling party and like every challenge, common sense will prevail and not those who scream the loudest, but those that hear the faintest of need and respond to Namibia and its people. In the end, Namibians will always decide.
