Quinton’s often humorous tale of their journey through life accentuated the fact that Trustco had a part to play for every Namibian – and the results presented by the Group Financial Director Floors Abrahams confirmed that fact. With 25% growth in earnings to N$ 530 mil- lion for the year, and revenues doubling over the last 5 years to N$ 1.246 billion, Abrahams pointed to a group that is clearly on an upward trend. Touching on the recession, he pointed out that while existing segments are affected by the current downturn, the group had a history of making almost prescient investments and acquisitions to ensure returns in spite of it. Highlighting the said acquisitions, with the resources segment awaiting a mining license for the Huso transaction to conclude, Abrahams showed how internally generated resources had to be used to grow the asset base, with only the current liquidity shortage in the Namibian mar- ket necessitating an increase in foreign funding. However, it remains a well-known fact that the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Closing out with a review of the group’s share price growth over the past five years, Abrahams showed how Trustco had not only outperformed the General Financial Index on the JSE, but had in fact produced an increase of wealth of 254% for shareholders over that period. With results such as these, Trustco has once again provided the one-two punch that investors have come to expect.

When the private sector as loyal corporate citizens with compassion and a post-independence flagbearer of a free market system excel, it is a compliment to the private sector and government. It serves as an inspiration to international investors and developers that Namibia has the fundamental strength to create a sustainable culture of hard work, resilience and innovation. The results of Trustco do not tell the whole story. Hidden between the dazzling facts and figures in graphs and columns lies the benefit to the country and its people that is many times greater than for the company and its shareholders. Trustco speaks to Namibians and their needs, because it wanders amongst those that they serve and understood and respond in ground- breaking and pioneering innovation to ensure access to previously excluded legal, health, education, insurance and housing products. It produced a sense of justice and fairness, because it was either affordable, or a foreign concept altogether to the biggest part of the Namibian society which mostly were spectators in the game of wealth creation and improvement of living standards during the pre- independence game. Sadly, most of those who experienced a good life and enjoyed the economic advantages that colonialism was meant to create for a privileged few, left with their wealth when the polling stations opened for the 1989 Independence Elections and wondered with the rest of the world how the small nation would survive the demands of the economy that independence was to throw at them. Nobody knew and Namibians took their changes with themselves and the spirit of daring ignited the Trustco genesis which today is a result of unity and equality through its workers, members and beneficiaries on various fronts of the Namibian household. Thanks to a political commitment and a genuine desire for peace those Namibians who stayed behind, slowly rose from the ashes of a devastating war and built their trust among themselves as their destiny was in each other’s hands. The Trustco results are as much an achievement of good government and a conducive environment as the skill and resilience of the Trustco model that distinguished the need of the people. It is also not in the formulas and figures of the Trsutco results, but an underestimated and undeniable fact that the products that Trustco introduced are still the great equalisers of a society that were denied basic services and a society with access to the same, because it’s Namibian. While a nation was reconciling, Trustco developed a business model, often unnoticed, for every Namibian regardless of social, political or economic status. It attacked the misguided wisdom of the time that justice is out of reach for the less privileged, that clinics are the best health that the poor can hope for, and that if learners fail school and subjects, life is over. Through distance education and various insurance products, thousands became equal before the law and equal in opportunities and the Trustco lifeline became a believer in Namibians and their potential. In what could at best be described as a hostile workers’ environment due to the always inevitable forces of politics and the abuse of trade unions, Trustco succeeded to be the best company to work for over the past two years. A workforce of 721 people in the Trustco group, each a shareholder of the group, and its dependents, is a massive contributor to social stability and hope for the future. However, the most important message of the Trustco results of which government and the private sector can take pride in, because they are in different ways responsible for the achievement, is that a leadership that creates a conducive environment, maintains peace and political stability and creates alliances, contribute to the wealth of a nation in which democracy and values thrive. When the spectacular performance of Trustco is celebrated, the future of good governance and accountability and a partnership must be celebrated as well. The foundation of the Namibian House lies in trust and excellence of which one cannot exist without the other. The trust in Trustco is its bond with the nation that it cares for, the leadership it respects and the future that Namibia deserves.
