15 September - 21 September 2016 EDITORIAL INFORMANTÉ |7 Five of the seven pups look at the camera with curiosity and fear. Chris Jacobie Several minutes later they are given pieces of meat containing an anaesthetic so that they can be weighed and taken to their destina- GEINGOB PHILOSOPHY TAKES OFF tion. One of the pups died soon after its arrival in Etosha. THE Namibian President, Dr Hage Geingob, is slowly but surely strengthening his own brand and philosophy of leadership. Namibians will have to get used to it, but at the same time Dr Gein- gob also has to remind himself that even within his party leadership and cabinet there might be comrades and colleagues who will not become used to his leadership style as quickly as he might have ex- pected. There will always be a danger that some individuals who do not understand the demands of Dr Geingob and his transformation agenda will only tell the president what they think he would like to hear. This is the thing. His leadership must engage them, because Dr Geingob is more than capable of convincing his opponents because he has proven that he has compassion for Namibia, the constitution, democracy and the people. Some of his appointees will be inspired, others will have to be pushed and some will have to be pulled. Ideally, the President will have to ensure that he does not move so fast on the journey of modern governance that some in the traditional heartland of Swapo feel like luggage that fell off a fast-moving car and is left by the side of the road. There is not a lot that can still be said about his frank engage- ment with the Namibian nation on the eve of his and his delegation’s departure for an extended working visit to the United States of Amer- ica and the United Nations. Because of his frankness in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, the Minister of Finance, Mr Calle Schlettwein, and the Minister of Education, Ms Katrina Hanse-Hima- rwa, Namibians may forget the rare demonstration of honesty and transparency that is unusual for politicians. It must be welcomed and encouraged as a fresh breeze in the political landscape and the begin- ning of a culture of honesty, sincerity and compassion that bodes well for all Namibians and the reputation of the nation. Namibians, friends and foes alike, must not forget that the Presi- dent received a historic election victory from Namibians of all back- grounds, because of their belief that he is the most suitable candidate to make a difference in their lives over the next few years. The party that nominated Dr Geingob, the ruling Swapo party, also has a re- sponsibility to the close to 80% that voted for Swapo. In this regard there will always be those that feel that they must be specifically rewarded for their support. In politics, it is wise to pay attention to the reasonable and the unreasonable. Dr Geingob had many messages to the nation on the eve of his de- parture, but the most important message is that he is not going to back off from challenges and that he will continue to lead by example. In short, it is clear that the President will not ask things from the nation that he is not prepared to do himself. He is setting the example from the smallest entities, like cost-cutting and his personal efforts to cut down on spending, to the more serious issues like Fitch credit ratings, the NEEEF debate and media regulations that were addressed decisively by the President. In doing so he assisted and removed ob- stacles that his delegation and a team of private business people might have encountered in strategies to secure markets, investment or de- velopment projects for Namibia during the US visit. Namibians know and should appreciate that the heart of those who obviously prematurely and without proper consultation earlier initiated the draft NEEEF legislation, requiring that 25% of all male white owned businesses must be given or sold to unspecified previ- ously disadvantaged, was ripped out by a public declaration of Dr Geingob that it is off and will not happen. However, it now places a huge responsibility on the private sector and Namibian businesses to come up with proposals and strategies to address injustices and ad- dress poverty through development and investment. In this regard, Dr Geingob kept his word by listening to public opinion and acting on submissions from the private sector, churches and civil society. He addressed the serious issues of pay demands from a Swapo-affiliated teachers union and, after appealing to their common sense, asked to accept the offer that Namibia can afford and admitted that more could have been done earlier to curb unnecessary government spending, but also told them that government will not be blackmailed into submit- ting to unreasonable demands and will also exercise its right to with- hold pay. He was also decisive in announcing that government cannot correct the plight of fishermen who insisted to go on an illegal strike and were dismissed after a competent court found them and their un- ion in breach of the labour law. Dr Geingob confirmed his belief in all instruments of the Constitu- tion by rejecting any form of government regulation of the media and, instead, appealed to their own sense of fairness and accuracy. It takes a form of political bravery, confidence in justice and com- passion for a country to do what is not popular, but what a leader believes is in the best interest of a country and its people. Leaders who recognise that and citizens who appreciate a democ- racy where they are heard will always be sure of overcoming any challenge.
