It is not about the reputation of the cleanest country on the continent alone, but it is to transform Namibia from clean to pristine. Owners, employees and employers have the opportunity to show how tall they are by how low they are prepared to bend to pick up the dirt and thrash of somebody else, and not only their own, and doing so in solidarity with the workers. It is the one historic opportunity where every Namibian, the blessed and the cursed, are contributing equally to the common good and the only measure is comradeship as the greatest equaliser. It is such a unique and revolutionary initiative of May Day celebrations that it can change the spirit of volunteerism and cooperation in the common good forever and is therefore an opportunity not to be missed as it might never present itself again. There is hardly anything more humbling and more unifying than a national clean-up day which includes the workers, the bosses and owners of business, as well as the unemployed and marginalised, to be equal in their service delivery to their country and fellow man than bending to pick up a piece of paper. It also makes those that litter think about their actions if they have to pick up that which was left for the winds to blow into all corners of a most beautiful country, with vast horizons, waving grasslands and woodlands where the mighty rivers of Africa cut their course from the Atlantic to the Indian oceans. Trade Unions in Namibia have revolutionary and adversarial relationships with governments and the private sector in their roots. The past 28 years saw legal battles, strikes and the loss of thousands of jobs, leaving unions rendered powerless by political factions and infighting. The contribution to independence is for the public record and to keep the country clean by those who were liberated is an act of patriotism and love of one’s country Workers Day on 1 May will be a new chapter and a building block of mutual trust that Namibia needs to get nation building back on track which seemed to have lost its way through interest of faction and again strengthen the foundation of nation building. There are too many interest groups suddenly retreating to their corners, looking for defence in- and among themselves and even isolating themselves from the rest of Namibia. The hands that clean the country will pull the teeth of political faction that tears into the soul of the Namibian nation. The May Day revolutionaries are leading a revolution of attitude. That is the greatest victory already. The President, Dr Geingob, and the NUNW-leadership have stirred the soul of patriotism and Namibia will be the cleanest, because the land where all will find their eternal resting place is pristine, and because national interest and factional pride was set aside on May Day 2018. Namibians are looking further and hope more, because the promises of the future are far greater than the agonies of the past.
