A good example will be the Ministry of Trade and Industry which now must - Africa Renewal lead the charge in an alliance with the Namibian private sector for every cent available anywhere, but it became so absent in everyday life that normal Namibians will find it hard to find the building if sent there. The ministry should have been a twin brother or sister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a willing slave in the service of the nation, but they will surely find new competition from South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe tough if not impossible to counter. The visit of the new Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Munangagwa, to President Geingob, is far from a courtesy call, information sharing or a meeting of minds about the challenge of leadership and government in Zimbabwe. The Munangagwa visit announced that there will be competition for investors rather than confirming old friendships. Events in South Africa where Cyril Ramaphosa replaced the beleaguered and enormously unpopular ANC president, Jacob Zuma, and the wrestling of power from Grace Mugabe, by retiring President Robert Mugabe, as well as the Angolan dismantling of the Dos Santos dynasty must put Namibia on notice that competition for investment is inevitable and will be unforgiving. Namibians must once again prepare themselves to adapt to the regional political changes additional to the changes in the Swapo leadership that the delegates of the Congress voted for. The political gears that are changing in Namibia must be synchronised with the unforeseen changes in the regional leadership. Namibia is fortunate. Dr Geingob can revise a strategy, because the events in neigbouring countries will have a profound impact on the future of all Namibians. With the wisdom of hindsight it now seems that the one centre of power decision by the Swapo Congress and victory of the Geingob slate were a ground- breaking event in the independence and liberation politics of the whole of the Southern African community. Namibia is fortunate that Dr Geingob is the current deputy chairman of SADC and the chairman-in-waiting. There is no one more qualified and experienced leader in SADC to steer the ship of the region through choppy waters of change. It is an opportunity for Namibia to lead transformation of the whole of the SADC region and its citizens – an opportunity that might never repeat itself in the future. Namibia has the best chance ever to assume a leadership role in Southern Africa, the African Union and the beleaguered United Nations. The country deserves its status as the first amongst equals, but should not rest on its laurels, but remain united with the Namibian House making the best of every opportunity that comes its way and benefitting from the immense potential of the region. That will not only define the nation, but a region and eventually the African giant that is waking up.BACK TO SCHOOL: Children attending school. Photo Contributed

Creating awareness for these issues through the arts, the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN), in collaboration with the Cardiff University from Wales, is currently running its Phoenix Project exhibition presenting works to improve health and reduce poverty in Namibia. The key themes of the exhibition include empow- ering the youth of Namibia in science, health and national development. Health issues targeted in the photographic exhibition include heart disease, anaesthesia, critical care and first response in trauma care. Perusing through the stock of images presented by the main photographer of the exhibition, Paul Compton, one is confronted with images that do little to capture the carnage created by lifestyle illnesses and poor health in the country as the photographer merely captures portrait photographs of students and medical staff, some aloof, some engrossed in group conversation and some engaged in technical training. Compensating for what the camera could not capture through its lens in the plight of Namibian health care, Compton highlights key issues raised by the Phoenix Project, detailing that Namibia lacks anesthetic care professionals, and a rise in conditions such as high blood pressure related to heart disease. Commenting on the exhibition, Project leader Professor Judith Hall said: “Working hand-in- hand with the University of Namibia, Phoenix is making a real impact so I’m delighted we have an exhibition to give people a flavour of what makes the project so special. One of the main themes of the exhibition is the power of youth – we can, we have done, and we will go forward harnessing this power. Youth energy, goodness and enterprise will make things better for all Namibians.” The phoenix exhibition will be on display at the NAGN until 18 February.
