Photo contributed Aili Iilonga OWNERS of privately-owned vehicles across Windhoek attempting to make an extra buck by offering transport to commuters at Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (NABTA) terminal loading points could end up forking out money in fines. Companies like Oyengombe Trading cc have been slap- ping motorists attempting to transport commuters at the Monte Christo Service Station with hefty fines and insist- ing that they have the jurisdiction to do so. Oyengombe Trading cc owner, Gotlieb Shapange, lashed out at privately-owned vehicles for illegally pick- ing up commuters from his loading point. “This is a private area which I pay rent for to Engen and I am regulated under my company to do that, “said Shipange. According to Shipange, NABTA as an association, is aware of his rights to issue fines to privately-owned ve- hicles. NABTA vice president, Jeffrey Platt, said he was not aware that Oyengombe Trading cc is fining motorists, but admitted that privately-owned vehicles should not be collecting commuters at designated loading points. “It is a common practice that private cars can be fined if seen transporting people at NABTA loading terminal points,“ he noted. Platt encouraged the public to be cautious of such regu- lations and to avoid transporting commuters in the areas created for public transport owners.

He couldn’t contain his excitement and said that he will make sure that the money the Founding Father, Dr Sam Nujoma, its echoes over the vast expansesis invested in his company. What Namibians will never forget, are the images of an aging President Nujoma outworking younger men and women with shovel and wheelbarrow, and therein lies a separate challenge for the Namibian railway entity, TransNamib, to unlock the frontier that the monumental railway achievement envisioned. With the implementation of the UN resolution 435 in 1988, the internationally supervised elections in 1989, the constitutional process and Independence on 21 March 1990, the Founding Father did not enjoy the immense popularity that he achieved then, when he handed over power to his successor, Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba. He steadily increased it through steadfastness and balancing the destiny of his party, Swapo, with the destiny of his nation, Namibia. The fact remains that on the day the South African flag was lowered and the Namibian flag hoisted in the Independence Stadium, trust amongst citizens was at its lowest and nobody, not even the returning Swapo leaders, were sure what to expect next, much less the politically conquered whose only common bond was a Namibian passport. The armed forces, previously fighting each other, opposition parties sceptical of their own 9 000 votes in the Northern power base and battlefield of the liberation war, and the remaining white community who saw their erstwhile countrymen leaving Namibia in droves after they voted in the hamlet town of Karasburg, could only hope for the best. Fortunately, they got the best in President Sam Nujoma, whose legendary discipline stayed the course of reconciliation and unity which is still today the cornerstone of the nation unshaken by the party-political factionalism that from time to time appears just to disappear again. Dr Nujoma is endowed with a special and rare skill amongst leaders of men that increased his own and his party’s popularity where today the names of his few political opponents can be jotted down on the back of a box of matches. Not many people have the privilege to have the founder of a nation alive and well amongst themselves and it is even rarer that a president who was elected by citizens with an ever-growing majority eventually becomes a citizen and a follower. This distinguishes Dr Nujoma as forever the first amongst equals and the most humble and a living example of compassion. Dr Nujoma is not the hand behind the shadows that cannot resist the power that he was used to have and could have abused were he not the man he is, never leaving his humble beginnings, but also not allowing to shirk away from challenges that seemed impossible to surmount. As much as Namibians respect his retirement, it also is assuring that he is around as part of the Presidential Advisory Council of the President, Dr Hage Geingob, and his predecessor, Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba. As a symbol of political stability there is no other society in the world that can offer a troika of three presidents whose loyalty towards each other, their party, its ideals and a nation with hope and dreams can rely on to steady the ship on the stormy waters that might be encountered from time to time. It is a modern precedent that is unequalled and a safety net for democratic growth and national dialogue that keeps the Namibian House on the rock while maintenance must be carried out. The real greatness of Dr Nujoma is especially proven when both President Pohamba and President Geingob were at one stage removed from their posts by Dr Nujoma, but regardless both became presidents with his support, because Namibia is always first. It shows remarkable political statesmanship and his choices then as now proved the best choice for Namibia and its future well-being. When the Founding Father celebrates his 88th birthday, he represents his dream for education and health for generations of vulnerable children of farm workers. Namibians must finish the Nujoma school as a matter of pride and obligation. When Namibians bow their heads it is out of respect, because greatness is measured in how low Dr Nujoma bowed in the service of Namibia. The biggest privilege that Namibians enjoy in celebrating the Nujoma birthday is that it is one of the rare unifying events and a most unique experience to share the country with its founder president and his successors who strengthen the very foundations of the Namibian House they laid. History will always remember Dr Nujoma as the greatest man amongst men.
