Outapi in Omusati is of extremely important political significance and the region where the myth of the Omusati clique had its origin during the Pohamba-succession and the Founding father, Dr Sam Nujoma, himself being the most famous son of the Omusati soil. It was in this region where the community blocked off the road to opposition parties who wanted to hold an election rally signifying their undying and unchallengeable political authority. Most importantly and of far more unappreciated importance is that Omusati is the only region that in the traditional Aawambo territory can truly be described as a melting pot where all the sub-Aawambo tribes, the Aakwanyama, Aakwambi, Aakandjela, Aakwaaludhi, Aakonlonkadhi, Aandongona, Aaambalantu and Aaambadja share geographical territory. The Outapi Swapo Elders Congress, the first main political event this year, shattered the Omusati myth or alternatively, the Omusati-clique supported the endorsement of the Geingob-presidency as the Swapo presidency. There is no other possibility available to consider as the SEC now also set the course towards a near inevitable outcome and demonstration of party unity isolating those who ignored political reality from future leadership roles, regardless of their talent that could have been an asset in the future. Already it shows that it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for any of the other Swapo affiliates to deviate from the route the Swapo Elders pointed to in the march towards the November congress. The Elders’ solidarity also confirmed that the mainstay of the Swapo party, that managed to secure an 80% majority in the elections, are united behind the Swapo tradition and culture. If anything, the Outapi congress of elders exposed a Swapo youth that is in disarray, but not infecting the whole of the Swapo party as the intended impression that social media platforms tried to create amongst Namibians. The issues of the Swapo Youth and factions at work are clearly issues that will have to be solved by the youth as it is isolated from Swapo. The upcoming Swapo leadership contest will not be for President, but for Vice-president, Secretary-general, Deputy-secretary-general and delegates to the management structures. It is also no coincidence that there is complete silence about the universally respected soldier and retired general, Martin Shali, who according to the social media campaigns would have entered Swapo leadership through the Elders Council. To the credit of the immensely popular general Shali, he declined and demonstrates his commitment to his party and, by declining, Genl. Shali kept open the door to politics and leadership through the normal Swapo culture, conventions and customs. His refusal robbed those who wanted to use him as their vehicle without one of their imaginary trump cards, because they underestimated the responsibility and loyalty of a soldier, commander and traditional chief. It is also noteworthy that the Minister of Home Affairs, Ms. Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana, hailing from Omusati herself again demonstrated national interest above factional interest and will surely contest for a national leadership position again according to the culture of Swapo. The national commitment of Ms. Iivula-Ithana who was appointed by her then political opponent, Dr Hage Geingob, as minister of Home Affairs is evident in the spectacular rise of the image of the troubled ministry to one of the most effective after it suffered the humiliation of being the worst of all and a laughing stock under her fellow Omusati descendant and minister of Youth and Sport, Jerry Ekandjo under which the youth became more divided. The aftershocks of a seismic political shift in the campaigns towards the Swapo Congress at the end of the year is inevitable and might reach all corners of society. The most significant legacy from the Omusati Elders Congress is that the huge value of political stability was confirmed in 2017 by the Swapo generation who was inspired by the events of 1966 to sacrifice life itself for their party and ideals. Omusati ignited the revolution of rededication that must launch the nation forward on all fronts of political, economic and social development and keep Namibia tall amongst the great and responsible nations of the world.
