Unfortunately, the world ever, on our watch!the ripple effects on the economy was all too soon felt by every otherdivision. We had to close the branch in Otjiwarongo, and even natureheld no quarter – the Walvis Bay office flooded as well. Sales were downacross the board, from Air Services, to IOL, Trustco Finance andInsurance. Even the staff were not spared – lots of our colleagues leftfor what they think are “greener” pastures, while we stood fast andbattled the oncoming storm. In our darkest hour, some even paid withmore – the loss of Oom Karl’s leg struck a blow close to Trustco’sheart. As always, though, the day is darkest before the dawn. Those fortunateenough to batten down and survive can always look forward to the raysof sunlight as they peer through the clouds once again, to brightenour day and light Trustco’s way.Too frequently we forget to look at the light shining from within us.The signs were there that Trustco would prevail, like it always has. Anew Media segment materialised in our midst, to capitalize onTrustco’s successes even when others won’t – and it started to providea combined legacy and digital media footprint, ranging from radio andnewspapers through to a new all-encompassing digital presence.Properties managed to make several revenue targets and expand theirconstruction services division even in the midst of other companies inthe industry going under. InSouth Africa a new mobile initiative was rolled out with minimalfunding, to great success.Insurance flushed out those lawyers trying to game their claims, andestablished stronger relationships with ethical lawyers, improving ourservice by a magnitude. With the local media only trumpeting thelawyers’ claims, it was clear Insurance needed a different champion –and it arrived in the form of a new minority shareholder. In alandmark deal that showed Trustco’s strength and growing foreignconfidence in our operations, Riskowitz Value Fund LP invested andacquired 20% of Legal Shield Holdings for a total of N$ 1.2 Billion, showing all our stakeholders the inherent value in Trustco. Our continued excellent performance of Trustco shares on thebiggest stock market on the African continent, the JSE, also earned usRoyal status at the prestigious annual Sunday Times Top 100 listedcompanies. Trustco also scooped the prestigious Platinum Seal ofAchievement in Deloitte’s 2017 annual “Best Company to Work For”survey in the large size category and winning second place after thecompany has previously won the competition consecutively. If we could manage all this when the tides were turned against us,just imagine what we’ll accomplish next. Namibia and President Geingob have an overwhelming mandate of power to restore the faith in, and credibility expected of self-sacrificing leadership. The national interest is best served by leaders that can trust each other, because only then can they expect Namibians to trust and support them and their decision-making. Tolerance and trust is the balance that will keep the nation on the faint line to progress and prosperity.
