Namibians were always aware that the scars of war will heal slowly and in many cases, maybe never. They also know that peace, independence and democracy will come at a high cost and even higher than the cost of war. The only difference is the burial list or body bag number. No community in Namibia could expect that the same sides will -- in an independent country -- be at war with each other or that the fires will be stoked by Namibians who should know better. If there is one truth that no Namibian can deny, it is that they need each other and must trust the current generations to transform the future in the best interests of all, because they have seen and experienced it all. Most importantly, Namibians and the Southern African region were aware that with the departure of the South African forces, the return of thousands of Swapo fighters, and the Cuban withdrawal from Angola -- with a civil war still raging in the neighbourhood -- the future and peace of every Namibian will be in their own hands. For peace, they can only depend on each other. It should therefore be a serious wake-up call to every Namibian when factions of one of Namibia’s great communities, the Ovaherero, had to be restrained by the police to prevent violence amongst themselves. Worst is the near physical confrontation and the brandishing of a fire arm at the graves of their Ovaherero-ancestors and warriors of the past at their holiest Okahandja shrine. This should remind every responsible citizen who benefitted from a 27- year peace, or by divine intervention missed the 24-year liberation war, of the fragility of continuous peaceful co-existence. Namibia now more than ever needs Namibians to face the challenges on the way to transformation and distribution of wealth. The Ovaherero don’t deserve division and Namibia cannot afford it. The Ovaherero communities spearhead one of the most colourful Namibian traditions that was graced by presidents and leaders of all sides of the political and traditional divide. They deserve their proud legacy and legacy of war to be one of peace, reconciliation and crossing culture and maybe more than any other community, because they deserve it through their sacrifices. Geographically, the community occupies large tracks of the country and historically the Ovaherero are maybe the most integrated society of any other Namibian group, occupying land from horizon to horizon. Without knowing who is right or wrong, it should never again be allowed that the Ovaherero, paying homage to their ancestors at their holy sites, be restrained by the police, ironically, a police and defence force that is made up from enemies of the past. It is undignified and does not benefit a community or the Namibian nation with more than a century of battle scars. Namibians from all corners of the country and on all sides deal with their own demons of the war of liberation, but put their shoulder against the wheel for a free nation on the morning of 22 March 1990. Namibia needs its natural resources in the hands of its human resources who battled the elements and tamed the country to the pride of the continent and the envy of the world. Time, effort and unity must be asserted to take up the challenges of development, investment and wealth creation for a nation. To sacrifice for peace is much less painful than to sacrifice for war. Peace, unity and justice are just too beautiful but that many in the world will never enjoy in a lifetime, and Namibians should not take that for granted. It is their mark in the international world that distinguishes them as a great nation with huge potential that cannot and should not be ignored when Namibians turned swords into ploughshares and are the better for it, even in the worst of economic times, as peace is their investment in an ever brighter future.

Worst is the near physical confrontation and the brandishing of a fire arm at the graves of their Ovaherero-ancestors and warriors of the past at their holiest Okahandja shrine. Nobody should ingnore the terrible reality that Ovaherero policemen could have been put in the situation to choose between family members on diffrent sides if violence did break out. Because of the impossible choice they could have refused to make a choice with consequences too ghastly to contemplate. Luckily it did not come to that. This should remind every responsible citizen who benefitted from a 27-year peace, or by divine intervention missed the 24-year liberation war, of the fragility of continuous peaceful co- existence and their responsibility to peace. The Ovaherero communities spearhead one of the most colourful Namibian traditions that was in the past graced by presidents and leaders of all sides of the political and traditional divide. Geographically, the community over centuries as pastoral farmers roamed every corner of Namibia amongst all communities, maybe more than most. Without knowing who is right or wrong, it should never again be allowed that the Ovaherero, paying homage to their ancestors at their holy sites, be restrained by the police. The Ovaherero heroes and ancestors that should have been honoured at Okahandja would not have recognized the great nation they left behind from the factions at war next to their graves.
