Real men don’t do to women that they would not dare to do to their mothers, sisters and grandmothers. His intolerance for political opposition of how misguided the radical youth movements with social media skills might be, would have normally disqualified him from trust of any President. But…. In the interest of fairness and justice and in spite of the sensational tribalist attack on fellow Namibians, Governor Endjala should not now be the biblical sacrificial lamb whose blood must wash away the sins of his fellow governors and leaders who set the tone of tribalism and got away with it. Additionally, even the most casual visitor and consumer of social media platforms would have noticed that these platforms that were abused to settle personal and political scores are the very same social media platforms that accept his apology. If political short-sightedness and self-importance were punishable crimes Endjala would have served a life sentence without parole. Ironically, justice and fairness which should be a sacred right of every Namibian, are mitigating circumstances for the governor who deserves no sympathy, but deserves the same treatment and tolerance than his fellow comrades and past tribal offenders at the very least. In spite of his inexcusable behaviour, Endjala presented a unique opportunity for a Swapo leadership held hostage by a factional power struggle to untie the legendary Gordian knot or move out of the political checkmate they find themselves in. The leadership is paying the price of going on the defensive since 2012 instead of the offensive when party discipline was challenged at very corner and by every political botjotjo parading as potential leader. The immunity and impunity list is long, but to mention a few. A former deputy minister, Bernardus Swartbooi, accused his own government of advantaging the “Wambos” in resettlement programmes and neglect the Nama- speaking community. Swartbooi also said he is not Swapo. The previous governor,Ms Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, was the first to declare that her Hardap Region is not for Caprivians but for Namas, when the current Deputy Minister of Works, James Sankwasa, blew the whistle on a tender for curtains for the Hanse-Himarwa-residence. A member of the politburo and central committee of Swapo, Kazenambo Kazenambo yesterday said Namibia is a false democracy demonising Namibians of the Northern power bases of Swapo. Kazenambo notoriously got away with the most unspeakable behaviour in Parliament against the Deputy Prime Minister, Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, following her to her car in the parking lot after an argument in the National Assembly. He was in the forefront of the “Kwangarra”- debate. Another Governor, Festus Uietele called the Ovaherero backstabbers and cowards. While the late Abraham Iyambo said the people of the South have nothing, because they drink too much. The Rukoro onslaught against the Wambo government is well documented and the Meatco woes look now to be more tribal than agricultural. If Endjala came under the impression that all is fair in love and war in Swapo factional and leadership fights, he cannot be blamed. The silence of his leadership speaks volumes and his idea might have been strengthened by physical fights that broke out at Swapo, and ironically, meetings that were just a footnote to proceedings. The Swapo leadership should get out of this checkmate position of double standards by laying down the law to the past or latest transgressors who received amnesty due to political convenience. The only way forward is that a red card goes to the next offender, whoever it might be. The party’s tolerance for those outside of the law are now used as weapons against the leadership who showed mercy when no mercy should have been shown. The sad fact is that the tolerance of tribalism by leaders demonised every other community in the Namibian society. The correction needed is that governors shake off their Bantustan mentality that is on display right through Namibia in varying degrees. Governors are the presidential selected few who should break down borders between communities and must not create walls, but break down barriers in their respective communities. They should not be the ones that built defences around their own preferences and isolate their communities from the rest by creating a false pride.
