Namibians and some veteran political leaders should by now come to realise that party loyalty cannot be an amnesty where, under a white flag, the leader- ship is attacked when they are under the impression that they are approached for peace. The division is amongst those who are on a party list, those whose two centres of power did not work out and those who believe they are entitled to be on the next lists. The leadership division is far from a national division threatening democracy or the constitutional order. The democratic and constitutional spirit does not only allow factions, but encourages even the smallest and most insignificant interest groups to influence policies and the composition of government. That is their right. However, this is not the Namibian reality. What is happening is an endless election campaign within the ruling Swapo Party since 2012 and, tragically, only amongst a few that did not make the various lists of the previous Parlia- mentary, Regional and Local Government elections, Board of State-Owned Enterprises and various other statutory bodies where politics and membership dictate appointments and anticipated privileges. Unfortunately, there is also a spill-over into recognised and unrecognised traditional leadership structures and with it, the shadows of tribalism will hover over party politics as a handy knife for the opportunistic to cut through the unity that democracy and choice brought. There are, however, many other examples of unity that are sometimes not so obvious and are, therefore, ignored, but should be celebrated. There is a national consensus that the land issue must be addressed and cor- rective measures taken. Namibians are united in the need to address the huge income gap and realising that, on the issue of land and the improvement of the lives of especially the disadvantaged Namibians are reconciled. Also, in the Zambezi Region, notorious for tribal division, the four chiefs of the region participated in the pre-land conference and took a more or less united position on the land issue advocating for more income from land that is allocat- ed in their respective areas. The chiefs of Zambezi by implication unanimously reject the misguided efforts of secession from Namibia. The warring factions of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority and the Maha- rero clan both claim allegiance to Swapo, but differ bitterly over the reparation processes, which is an embarrassment for both. In most households on farms, in towns and cities at least three Namibian tribes, sometimes more, are sharing the workplace with equal passion and mu- tual goodwill. Same in the private and public sectors. Domestic workers who are cleaning the house are mostly not connected by language or origin to the workers in the garden or in the fields. In some house- holds, the ironing and washing is also done by someone different from either the garden or domestic worker. The ruling Swapo Party is nearly invincible, but a nation kept hostage by political faction and infighting will be vulnerable and the first casualty in the crossfire will be credibility of governance and leadership. Namibia is not a free-for-all, but all are free and must be kept free, because it was hard-earned.
