IFFCO PATRIKA if=dk Agri Innovations Bullet Santi Inventor : Mr. MansukhbhaiAmbabhai Jagani District & State : Amreli, Gujarat Category of Innovation :Agricultural equipment Innovation Description: For farming operations, tractor is not an affordable option for farmers having small land holdings. Increase in the cost of fodder for bullock, regular occurrence of drought and shortage of farm labor forced the farmers of Saurashtra area of Gujarat to look for an alternative to Bullock. Inspired by a local mode of transport, the three-wheel taxi chakdo, (common transport in the Saurashtra region) innovator has developed an innovative multipurpose farming machine which can do all the operations which can be carried out by a pair of bullock. Using the self fabricated chassis, drive and power of an Enfield Bullet motorcycle in front the innovator has retrofitted an attachment with two wheels at the rear with a tool bar to fit various farm implements. The rear wheel of the motorcycle has been removed and an innovative assembly unit has been attached. It can also be designed and attached to locally available Chhakdo rickshaw or assembled vehicle having minimum 6.5 HP engine. This meets various needs such as ploughing, weeding and sowing seeds and spraying. It can improve productivity and reduce operating costs for farmers, who currently use bullock-driven plough and cannot afford the tractors or power tillers. Award Status: Innovator has been awarded National Award from NIF's First National Competition for Grassroots Innovations and Traditional Knowledge in 2001. Innovator had visited South Africa as a part of a delegation led by SRISTI on the invitation of CSC. Intellectual Property Status: Patent Granted in India (No: 205097) and USA (No: 6854404B2) 5

IFFCO PATRIKA if=dk Women in Agriculture Gitaben : Flying Against the wind For this story Team IFFCO went to the Sabarkantha in Gujrat. With GDP per captia of just ₹1.45 Lakh most of residents are small and marginal farmers which constitute 71% of the population. According to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj it is one of the country's most backward districts. These farmers are mostly engaged in the cultivation of Cotton and Wheat. Well, there was one woman who was not afraid to stand out of the crowd and fly against the wind. Resident of Bhambhudi Village in Vijaynagar Taluka of Sabarkantha Dongri Gitaben Harshbhai decided to move away from Cotton farming and take a calculated risk to sow a new crop. For this she chose Peas. Gujrat is not among the major producers of pea Yet, Gitaben had decided to take the risk. In conversation with Shri N S Patel (then SMM, IFFCO of Gujrat) Gitaben revealed that two years prior (Rabi 2019-2020) to shifting to Pea farming Gitaben, like other farmers of the region was involved in Cotton farming. She realized that she was not getting the best out of her 1 Bigha plot. She highlighted that cotton might be a commercial crop, but it is a very labour-intensive crop, and her 5-member family can't keep up with needs of the crop and are dependent on the external hired labor which expensive and time-cunsuming. She highlighted cotton crops are also prone to diseases and it is also dependent on the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Due to all this she was only able to make a profit of ₹25,000 by its cultivation. With the aim to make the most out of her small plot she decided to shift towards the cultivation of Peas. When she went to the market to procure the seeds, she immediately realized that the cost of seeds for Peas is considerably less than that of the cotton seeds. Also, the time of maturity of the Pea crop is much less than that of the cotton crop and can be harvested multiple times. The labour needs of the Pea crop is not more than that of the cotton crop, as the Pea crop requires only 15 days of intensive labour most of which is required during the harvesting stages. For the fertigation needs she has only used Farm Yield Manure (FYM) which is not an added cost for most of the time as it is easily available in the surrounding areas. Pea which is prone to sucking pest needs to be protected through pesticide, of which Gitaben used two sprays in a crop life cycle. Thus, shifting towards Pea cultivation immediately saved the fertilizer and pesticide costs. Gitaben was able to get a crop harvest of around 300kg, for the past three crop cycles. W h i l e keeping some of the produce for her own household she then takes the produce to the nearest Mandi (market) in Vadali Here she was able to get ₹31/kg in the first cycle, then ₹20/kg in the second and ₹18kg in the third cycle. On being asked whether the profitability has declined due to less amount per kg each time she said she was able to keep the profits running . Gitaben informed she has been making a profit of ₹40,000 to ₹45,000 per crop cycle which is almost ₹15,000 more than what she was making while sowing cotton in her plot. Gitaben is source of inspiration for the farmers in her village and other areas who are slowly falling into her footsteps. Story of Gitaben can serve an assurance to many more women farmers in the country to take risks in order to run agriculture profitably. Astonished by the willpower of this woman Team IFFCO & v¡d v¡tyhnhi salutes Dongri Gitaben Hareshbhai. - Ank Anjalideep 9

IFFCO PATRIKA if=dk Giving back to society Restoration of Pratapgarh Thirsty land craves, make the clouds rain O Lord! Give millets to birds and sweets to children they crave too, O Lord! You may or may not get the answer : why this call of the people living in the villages of Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan was not reaching to God. The farming community, which was always eager to see greenery, was losing its happiness and peace in the famine-stricken land. The fertility of the land was afflicted by a curse. The barren fields had created an atmosphere of mourning in the lives of the farmers. This condition of poverty could be seen on the physique of those rural land worshipers. Lack of sustainable means of livelihood caused a large scale migration. Nature has been kind to everyone, but when it gets angry, life gets into trouble. The same was happening in the villages of Pratapgarh. All this changed when the Western India Rainfed Agriculture Project of IFFDC, a subsidiary of IFFCO, turned towards those villages of Pratapgarh in the year 1999. The aim of this project was to conserve surface water, develop ground water sources and provide sustainable livelihood through soil water conservation. IFFCO constructed a dam and anicut (of average height of 6.5 feet) in that area. This construction work was done over the seasonal river Irav. This construction with an average water storage of 67600 cubic meters led to the development of an average irrigated land of 95 acres. Soybean, maize, mustard, wheat, gram, cotton, paddy and vegetables are being grown where there was no food grain. The yield of the area has increased up to 60 percent. Due to the continuous availability of water, cotton cultivation became surprisingly profitable. Earlier the production was to be 2.5 quintals per hectare which has now increased to 40 quintals per hectare. The yield of Rabi crops increased from 7 to 27 percent. IFFCO formed 939 Self Help Groups and 22 Primary Livelihood Development Cooperative Societies (PLDCS) in nine villages which are still functioning. Women were creating employment through self-help groups by making incense sticks and with the help of sewing machines. Now there was no need to travel 15 km by carrying the grain on the head for selling. Grain could be easily sold at the committee level at a good price. Societies got deposits which made it possible for them to help each other and take loans from banks. 925 trained experts help in the implementation and monitoring of the plan prepared by the rural community. Under the project, 104 anicuts, 49 earthen dams, 230 ponds and 515 farm ponds were constructed. Started in 1999, this project had transformed the lives of 1,50,000 poor Bhil and Meena tribes living in 400 villages in just 6 years till 2006. This effort of IFFCO in Pratapgarh district was awarded the 'Social Impact Award' in the year 2011-12 under the livelihood category by The Times of India group. This was the story of human life where now greenery spread all around. - Rohit Kumar 13
