Foundation for CSR @ Redington REDINGTON CSR – CONNECT September 2019 A Child Who Reads Will Be An Adult Who Thinks InitiativesOf Redington FoundationTo Develop Children Reading Habit

“My hope lies in the youth of the country. Such of them as are prey to vice are not vicious by nature. They are helplessly and thoughtlessly drawn to it. They must realise the harm that it has done them and society. They must understand too that nothing but a rigorously disciplined life will save them and the country from utter ruin.” – Mahatma Gandhi. When children fail to succeed, the whole community is harmed. Keeping students engaged in the classroom is fundamental to academic success. The use of punitive discipline practices that rely on suspension, expulsion, and other harsh consequences—often applied disproportionately to minority students—undermine the goal of success for all. Positive School Discipline is a comprehensive approach that uses discipline to teach rather than punish and, as a result, helps students succeed and thrive in school. Schools that take this approach promote positive student behaviour while preventing negative and risky behaviours. Positive School Discipline is integrated into the policies, programs, and practices of a school and is applied system wide—in the classroom, school, and community—to create a safe, supportive learning environment for all students. Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of the Students. Our Project Excellence focuses on bringing excellence in student community. The Foundation has associated with more than 60 schools and supports more than 1,00,000 students in schools. The Foundation’s association with Hewlett Packard (HP) for implementing their Digital Literacy program will equip children in the schools in rural Tamil Nadu with computer skills. Our training processes now in schools started focussing on value education. Through the remedial and career counselling program, the students are motivated and guided for their career aspects. Our support is also extended to the teachers with proven skills, know how and techniques including the differential teaching methods to address the need of the students coming from varied socio-economic backgrounds. Let’s together enable the students to evolve as tomorrow’s leaders. Saluting all the Teachers of India while remembering the Indian Soul Dear Bharat Ratna Dr Sarvepally Radhakrishnan on his 131st Birth Anniversary. Wish the Teachers a very Happy Teacher’s Day! A Child Who Reads Will Be An Adult Who Thinks Initiatives Of Redington Foundation To Develop Children Reading Habit Article By Mr. Murugan, Regional Lead An initiative to create an opportunity for the rural school children to experience reading a well-designed children magazine is successfully implemented in Madurai Zone. Reading habits in kids will enable them to articulate thinking skills and imaginary skills. My visit to Dr. T. Thirugnanam Primary School, Madurai, made me observe the concept of “Class Room Library” introduced by Mr. Saravanan, Head Master of the School. The primary class children are motivated to read the books available at the class room to develop their reading skills. As I already know about “THUMBI”, which is a well documented kids magazine, our foundation planned to sponsor the issue of THUMBI” magazine in the rural schools of Madurai including Dr. T. Thirugnanam Primary School. Thus “Reading Skill Development Program” was introduced under our Excellence Project for our associated and non associated rural schools. A children monthly magazine “THUMBI”, published by an NGO from Thiruvengikal, Thiruvannamalai, is subscribed to deliver 10 copies to 10 schools for an year. This “THUMBI” has good pictorial representations to attract the young readers and the story contents are published on bilingual (English & Tamil) in facing pages. This may also enhance the young readers to learn English language, with better understanding. Bilingual Articles 10

This initiative has been well received by recipient schools, which are primary and has under privileged students. Ms. Barbara Aro Ramya, Project Coordinator, who took care of the execution activity with regard to the issue of magazine, received an acknowledgement message from a school which is given below. Learning two languages is easier for the children. For young children, learning language is a part of their brain chemistry. Children are built to absorb information; they do this in an unconscious state of mind, like they’re learning, and they don’t even know it. Therefore providing the opportunity for kids to read a bilingual magazine will help them to develop the skills in both the languages. Creating opportunity for 11 young readers is a way of creating future leaders.
