It is a message that we Slice of the Parklandshould not have to keep repeating, but we have tokeep saying it over and over again, especially at Getting caught in the actthis time of year. Not drinking and driving should be a no-brainer,yet so many people still take part in this high-riskactivity. In Manitoba this year 35 per cent of trafficfatalities have involved impaired drivers. That is 25people who will never return home to theirhusbands, wives, children and parents. In most, if not all cases those accidents werepreventable. It is a senseless waste. RCMP have charged 1,479 impaired drivers so farthis year, with more to come. The RCMP’s holiday checkstop program is upand running and is always successful in rooting outthose people who still do not get the message thatdrinking and driving is unacceptable anddangerous. Last year, the program checked 10,000 vehiclesas part of 357 checkstops which resulted in 110people being charged with Criminal Code impaireddriving offences. Undoubtedly a lot of heartachewas avoided because of those charges. Christmas is festive time, full of visiting withfamily and friends. Often that celebrating involvesalcohol. When it does, make responsible decisions aboutgetting yourself home. Take a cab, call thededicated volunteers at the RIDE program, lean onfamily and friends or rely on the kindness ofstrangers. Just don’t drink and drive. Remember, somebody at home loves you. Don’task me why. •••The Herald accepts letters to the editor for publica-tion on this page. Gift Cards The Kings played one of their best games of the season, last Tuesday in a 6-2 win over the Waywayseecappo AvailableWolverines at Credit Union Place. On Friday, theydropped a 4-0 home ice decision to the Winnipeg Blues, then beat the Virden Oil Capitals, 4-3 Saturday in Virden. Kings head coach and GM Marlin Murray really likedthe effort in the win against the Wolverines. “I thought we were very, very good for most of thegame. When you’re up a bunch of goals, sometimes youcan be critical of them not working hard enough. Butthat’s just the mentality of anybody in any sport. But over-all, I really liked the game on Tuesday,” he said. Murray felt the effort was still there in the first periodof Friday's game, where the Kings had six or seven gradeA scoring chances. The difference in the game, he said, was the two goals the Blues scored in the last 90 secondsof the second period. “We needed to get to the dressing room and didn’t doit. I thought the third period, we were just okay. Again, ifwe capitalize on our chances in the first period, I think itmay be a little bit of a different outcome,” he said. “In the third period, there was too much individualefforts and there wasn’t enough team concepts.” Tuesday’s game marked the halfway point of the sea-son. In evaluating the team and where it is at now, thereare several players who have improved since the start ofthe season, becoming good junior A players. “When you see it on a day-to-day basis, maybe youdon’t see it as much. But we know that there’s been sever-al accomplishments here and guys have taken the rightsteps. But you never want to get used to a losing effort,”Murray said. The Dec. 1 deadline, in which teams are reduced to 25player cards, resulted in the Kings being active on thetrade front. After acquiring Jamie Miller and Troy Rapuano Nov.26, the Kings dealt Tanner Hepp to the Winkler Flyers forfutures. “(Rapuano) is a forward that works hard. He’s a depthguy that gives us significant minutes and he can be used ina lot of situations. He’s a good character kid, so we’rehappy to have him,” Murray said.
