Final Project NCM 117 LEC Care of Clients with Maladaptive Patterns of Behavior, Acute and Chronic Mercado, Kianna BSN - 3201
In general terms, eating disorders (EDs) are illnesses that affects a person's food relation and body image. The three types of eating disorders include: Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa, and Binge-eating. Those who have these disorders have excessive thoughts of food, their body shape or weight, and the control about their food intake. According to Anna Hindell, a psychotherapist in New York, one may experience these disorders as an anxious state of mind, a depressed mood, or may have a mix of both anxiety and depression. In the current times, studies show that the rate of people having eating disorder has increased during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Global statistics show that in the current year, the numbers have increased from 3.4% to 7.8% (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2019) or 70 million people internationally live with eating disorders (National Eating Disorders Association). In terms of sex, these disorders are more prevalent among young women than men but men have an increased risk of dying because they are diagnosed much later than women. The stigma associated with EDs has highlighted stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination.
On the other hand, another mental health issue in mental health nursing practice is the substance use disorder (SUD). This generally involves the behavioral patterns in which a person continues using a substance despite having problems caused by its use. Moreover, it is uncontrolled and they are intensively focused on using certain substances. Genetics and environmental factors are the main causes for addiction. People with mental health disorders are more at risk for SUD. Statistically, 22 million people suffer from active substance use disorders worldwide. SUDs may take contribute to personal and family distress, additional healthcare costs, social withdrawal, and other psychosocial dysfunctions. Just like any other disorders, the stigmatization about SUD involves humiliating and rejecting those who have these disorders as most people believe that they have moral failing and the defects on their character are to blame for the disorder.
So with all that, what are the future trends in the nursing practice that are related and would alleviate these issues?
