PCGS# 4520 | EST: $6,500+ LOT 118 10C 1831 PCGS MS66 CAC Clearly within the Condition Census of the JR-5 die marriage and this is a BEAUTIFUL, borderline SUPERB GEM. The luster is bold with intense swirling cartwheels and a hint of semi-PL underlying reflection when rotated in a light. The surfaces are bathed in a Caribbean blue that mingles with a tangerine-gold and pale green accent at the rims. The luster really brings the colors to life! The devices are crisply and fully struck with a rich, frosty texture that is a real delight to behold. A few very tiny, superficial traces of contact can be found with a strong glass, nothing too distracting, especially when taken in view of the whole package. The eye appeal is great! PCGS 7, NGC 11, CAC 5. This was the most recent example to sell in auction, realizing $20,563 in the October 2014 sale of the Gene Gardner Collection. LOT 119 10C 1833 JR-7. LAST 3 HIGH. PCGS MS66 The “Last 3 High” is a popular Red Book listed variety that was struck using two die pairs; JR-5 and JR-7, as here. The JR-5 is a common variety, listed as Rarity-1, where as the JR-7 is a challenging Rarity-4+. The authors of the JR reference (1984) noted “A very rare variety that is difficult to locate in any grade. Finest seen is VF-30.” More recently the authors of the Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide (2015) reiterated its rarity above VF grades, but “at least three MS examples are known.” Of those, this IMPRESSIVE MS66 must be FINEST KNOWN for the variety. This impressive GEM offers richly toned surfaces that are a delight to behold. Soft golden-russet and tan-gold patina at the centers blend with reds, oranges, pinks, greens and violet tones as your gaze moves to the rims. Sharply struck in general with very crisp star centers, drapery lines, and hair curls, and just showing some softness on the right side of the eagle’s neck and wing. A thick underlying frost comes out in a light, further enhancing this GEM’s superb visual allure. The placement of the TED in UNITED helps identify this as JR-7 as opposed to JR-5. The bases of TED get progressively higher on this marriage, and the bases of AM of AMERICA are joined. Since this is a later use of this obverse die (shared with JR-5), the die crack from the rim to the cap identifies this state of the obverse die. PCGS 4, NGC 0. This is the only JR-7 graded so fine, and it is the PCGS CoinFacts Plate Coin for the variety and the second plate coin for the Last 3 High type as well. There has not been an MS66 example sold sine February 2016, where one sold for $17,038 (was the much more common JR-5). The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $20,000 for the Red Book variety, the die marriage, as a Rarity-4+ should carry some premium for the advanced die variety specialist. Good luck! PCGS# 4523 | EST: $15,000+ LOT 120 10C 1833 JR-9 PCGS MS66 Among those tied for second highest graded at PCGS, there is just a single MS67+ graded finer for the date, and clearly this is a Condition Census example of the JR-9 variety, one of the more common marriages of the date. A deep, earth-tone palette of olive, tan, pewter, russet, and slate frame both obverse and reverse, accented by a thick, satiny frost belying the toning. GEM caliber surfaces are devoid of any notable marks or hairlines, even a powerful loupe fails to aid in the location of any post mint flaw of any kind. The striking definition is bold with generally crisp details on both sides. The eye appeal is quite nice. PCGS 6, NGC 3. Only a single MS66 has ever sold in auction, realizing $11,250 in a December 2020 internet only auction. The Pogue Collection had a Proof example of the “normal” date, and an MS66 example of the “Last 3 High” variety. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $15,500 and as one of the absolute FINEST examples graded by PCGS of the date, regardless of variety, this is an exceptional piece to include in a set of Bust dimes or type coins. LOT 197 $1 1885-CC NGC MS64 DMPL CAC Awesome contrast! Blinding, brilliant mirrored surfaces gleam with a remarkable flash. A very early strike from these dies, as there are lots of die polishing lines all over, especially around the letters of the reverse. Well struck devices have a marvelous, thick, creamy frost. The contrast between the reflective fields and the velvety frost of the devices, gives this 85-CC a great Cameo-like appearance. While a strong glass reveals a couple of very superficial ticks, the eye appeal approaches that of a full GEM! PCGS 478, NGC 184, CAC 70. The last one to sell in auction was back in 2017, when a coin that was not as clean sold for $1,410. Today, the market for Carson City dollars is hot. The current CAC CPG value is $1,880. A great coin that any collector would be happy to have in their set. PCGS# 97161 | EST: $1,500+ LOT 198 $1 1885-CC PCGS MS66+ DMPL CAC YOWZER! What a sensational SUPERB GEM DMPL we have here. We do rank the coin as a 66.8++! The pickiest DMPL buyer WILL love this coin. Intense mirrors are at least 8”+++ and beam boldly from all over. Just a few very tiny, scattered ticks can be seen. When you twirl this coin, the mirrors look like a freshly made sheet of glass. You can even brush your teeth using these mirrors! A light band of totally original pale russet frames some of the rims on both sides. Overall, this coin (even with the hint of toning) is a full black and white bold contrasted piece. Miss Liberty and the details are fully struck and of course have thick frost. The eye appeal is jaw dropping! PCGS 44, NGC 21, CAC 14. PCGS has graded 10 in MS66+ DMPL. The last PCGS CAC piece to sell in auction brought $32,200 in April 2021. The current Collectors Universe value is $16,000. Between the quality and eye appeal of this coin we expect it to enjoy serious bidding and possibly a record price. Be prepared! PCGS# 97161 | EST: $12,500+ 90
LOT 199 $1 1885-O NGC MS66+ CAC Dappled pastel sky blue and pale gold toning is gently broadcast across the entire surface of the obverse. A strong, radiant luster sparkles all over, making the subtle shades glimmer all over. The reverse is untoned. All the details are incredibly well struck for an O-mint dollar. The eye appeal is very high end! PCGS 3421, NGC 5000, CAC 681. There are 163 graded MS66+ at NGC. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $700 and this coin should bring that or more when it crosses the block. Good luck. PCGS# 7162 | EST: $450+ LOT 200 $1 1886 PCGS MS67 A superb 1886 dollar. While common enough in this grade to satisfy collector demand, this lustrous example has a halo of gold and azure at the periphery on both the obverse and reverse which adds character and charm. The eye appeal is great! PCGS 564, NGC 968. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $1,400 and this one should bring more for its lovely eye appeal. PCGS# 7166 | EST: $1,000+ LOT 201 $1 1888-O SCARFACE. VAM-1B. PCGS MS63 This is a remarkable, toned CHOICE Scarface. This variety, a TOP 100 VAM, called “the mother of all die breaks,” is one of the most popular and highly sought varieties in the entire Morgan dollar series. Easily identifiable by the dramatic die break that begins at the dot in between the E and P on the obverse crosses the field, breaking over the bridge of Miss Liberty’s nose, extending all the way through her cheek down to the neck and into the hair curls. Clearly this is a terminal die state; it is hard to imagine that many coins could have been struck after the die broke this badly before it completely split in half and was no longer serviceable. This is a beautifully toned example, of an issue that rarely comes so nice. An arching band of rainbow toning caresses the left side of the obverse, while the reverse has a thick halo of cranberry-red, deep violet, and tangerine-gold that yields to a brilliant silver center. For an O-mint, the strike is forceful, and the dramatic die break that gives this variety its colorful name is extremely bold. The eye appeal is very cool. VERY RARE any finer. PCGS 14, NGC 8. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $7,250 and a coin like this should bring a strong bid. Only 8 are graded finer. This really CHOICE BU Scarface is worthy of a strong bid. PCGS# 87184 | EST: $4,500+ 91
LOT 202 $1 1889-CC NGC AU55 The KEY Carson City dollar in all grades, and in AU, these become very scarce indeed. The present coin offers a bold luster, over 50% of the original brilliance remains with hints of some reflective tendencies, suggesting this coin was possibly Prooflike at the time this coin was minted. We note some minor lines on both sides, the friction accumulated over its brief time in commercial channels. This untoned Choice AU was likely dipped at one time, but the eye appeal is superior to many in this grade range. PCGS 298, NGC 253. The two NGC coins sold in 2021 have brought $8,100 and $7,500 in April and February respectively. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $11,000. With its decent eye appeal, this lustrous 89-CC will delight many collectors. Good luck. PCGS# 7190 | EST: $6,500+ NOTES 9922
LOT 203 $1 1889-CC PCGS MS63 PL CAC WHOA! What a stunningly RARE fully Prooflike and Premium Quality MS63 1889-CC! The rarest Carson City mint Morgan dollar, a date that is always coveted by collectors regardless of grade, any Mint State piece is a trophy for the Morgan dollar collector. Add to that the incredible, fully reflective luster, sharp strike, and blazing luster, this coin is a very impressive CHOICE Brilliant Uncirculated example. Untoned, and intensely brilliant with an incredible luster, the surfaces have a blinding reflection. The mirrored, icy smoothness of the fields are a delight to behold and have a bold depth of clarity. The sharply struck devices have a rich, frosty texture that at certain angles, gives a nearly cameo like impression. The visual allure is big, bold, and beautiful. PCGS 33, NGC 40, CAC 5. The last two PCGS/CAC examples sold in April 2014, both for around $65,000. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $66,000. Very well struck the devices are crisply variety so named for the small triangle shaped die chip struck up with full definition on both sides. The Luster is just below the eagle’s beak. Lustrous with frosty tan-gold bold with radial cartwheels. A few tiny contact marks are all translucent toning that can be seen on both sides. Some light that keeps this 64+ from a full GEM grade. Regardless of marks can be seen scattered about, none too serious for the technical grade, the aesthetics are exceptional and this one grade and they don’t have much impact on the eye appeal. will fit in a Gem set. LOT 208 $1 1893 PCGS MS64 Very CHOICE and BRILLIANT! Nearly of full GEM quality, this is a delightful, high end Mint State example. Sharply struck with frosty devices, this untoned example of this semi-KEY low mintage date has a spectacular luster. There are no serious scuffs or bag marks, and the eye appeal is really nice, we have no idea why CAC did not bean this lovely MS64. PCGS 1308, NGC 600. The last one brought $2,040 and before that, one sold for $2,100. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $2,500. LOT 209 $1 1893-S PCGS AU53 CAC An exceptional quality AU example of this KEY DATE. Only 100,000 were struck for circulation, the lowest mintage of the entire series. Because of its rarity, many examples have been resubmitted in hopes of attaining a higher grade, thus inflating the Population and Census figures. What is telling is how few examples have been approved by CAC. The presently offered CHOICE AU piece has a bold retained luster that swirls on both sides. Well struck with just the lightest trace of friction that can be seen in the fields and on the devices. Mostly untoned (and would fit nicely in an untoned set), there is only the faintest hint of the palest clear gold iridescence The eye appeal is fabulous for this date and grade. PCGS 88, NGC 47, CAC 7. NO CAC-approved AU53 has ever sold in auction. The current CAC CPG value is listed at $29,400, and keep in mind that an AU55 with CAC will cost between $40,000 and $45,000 in today’s market. This high end AU53 will indeed bring a very strong bid! Good luck. PCGS# 7226 | EST: $22,000+ 96
LOT 210 $1 1901 PCGS MS61 Despite a mintage of nearly 7 million, the 1901 Philadelphia mint Morgan dollar is a condition rarity in ANY Mint State grade. Perhaps dipped ages ago, this Uncirculated example boasts a fully brilliant mint luster with bold cartwheels. Well struck for the date, this piece has a very nice look for the grade with nothing but the most minute traces of contact on either side. PCGS 233, NGC 314. The most recent PCGS graded example without a green CAC bean brought $2,760 back in February 2020. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,000 and in today’s market, last year’s auction records are irrelevant. Good luck, bidding will be intense. PCGS# 7272 | EST: $3,000+ NOTES 97
LOT 211 $1 1901 PCGS MS64 CAC The 1901 has the distinction of being the RAREST Philadelphia mint Morgan dollar in Mint State, despite a mintage that approaches seven million coins. A prize in ANY Mint State grade, the closer to GEM you get on the grading scale the rarer this coin gets. Exactly three dozen have been graded MS64 or finer at PCGS--and that is after 36 years of grading operations, and many different old time hoards of Mint State Morgan dollar bags appearing-- no large quantity of 1901 dollars have ever come out. This is a very high end looking specimen of this rare date. A brilliant luster rolls strongly on both sides accenting a soft, creamy silver white iridescent hue in the fields. Well struck for the date with generally crisp, well defined devices on both sides. The eye appeal is exceptional and very bold. PCGS 33, NGC 17, CAC 4. The most recent example to sell in auction with CAC approval brought $58,800 in September 2019. The PCGS Price Guide value is $60,000 an the CAC CPG value is $63,000. Keep in mind that in GEM that the value jumps dramatically! The only PCGS MS65 to ever sell realized $288,000 in November 2020! This coin represents a great value for the collector. If you are working on a Registry Set of Morgan dollars, you know exactly how challenging this date is to find. PCGS# 7272 | EST: $50,000+ 98
