Prevent suicides – connect, communicate, careThe Nation September 10, 2018 01:00A FASTER PACE of life is among factors contributing to the rising rate of suicide amongThais, according to Dr Boonruang Triruangworawat, director-genHe was commenting on the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day today. He cited a recent study that showed 53,000 Thais attempted suicide annually, averaging six peopleper hour – and 4,000 took their lives last year. The loss of life was blamed for economic losses estimated at over Bt400 million.Dr Boonruang said the pace of life in Thailand, especially in urban areas, had become faster andmany people had adopted a “quick-quick mentality” by which decisions must be made instantly andthere’s no time to contemplate. When pressure mounts, they tend to be overwhelmed by stress and are unable to recognize solutionsto their problems.Boonruang urged a collective social effort to prevent suicides – “connect, communicate and care”.It required the promotion of good relationships and communications among family members and adetermination to take care of anyone who appears mentally or emotionally vulnerable. He said the International Association for Suicide Prevention had sought the cooperation of Thailandand other member-countries to step up public awareness campaigns addressing the issue, both inconjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day and later.Families, communities and societies everywhere must work together to prevent suicides, Boonruangsaid. Annually around the world, 800,000 people deliberately kill themselves, representing one suicideevery 40 seconds, he said. The World Health Organisation’s target is to reduce the number of suicides by at least 10 per cent by2021.Most Thais who commit suicide were single males of working age, Boonruang said. The youngestvictim on record was 10 years old, the oldest 100.The chief contributing factors are relationship issues, alcoholism and drugs, and socio-economicworries.Dr Nuttakorn Chumpathong, head of the National Suicide Prevention Centre, said anyone could gethelp or advice at any time of the day or night by phoning 1323.There’s also a phone app called Sabaijai with which users can appraise their risk of committingsuicide.Nuttakorn listed nine “signals” that could indicate someone might be considering suicide. They are: talking about it on social media, self-imposed isolation, insomnia, chronic use of alcohol ordrugs, depression, and suffering from chronic ailments.http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/national/30354067

Week 3 Title : Prevent suicides – connect, communicate, care Author : The Nation Source : http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/national/30354067 SummaryThailand has a rising rate of suicide. The main contributing factors to suicideare socio-economic worries, relationship issues and alcoholism and drugs. The signal that could indicate considering suicide is talking about it on socialmedia, self-imposed isolation, suffering from chronic illness, insomnia, chronicuse of alcohol or drugs and depression. The suicide can prevent by thecollective social effort. They are connection, communication and care. Peoplein our society should communicate, take care and have a good relationship inthe family. Moreover, the communities and societies must work together toprevent suicides. The International Association for Suicide Prevention hadattempted the cooperation of Thailand and the other countries to improve andpromote the public awareness campaigns for solving the suicide issue on theWorld Suicide Prevention Day. My reaction/reflection:Nowadays, our state of society is getting worst. The Thai people live in a rushsocial surrounding with stress. The success is a social value for living in oursociety. On the other hand, an expectation of the others, stress and pressureare the cause of suicide. They aren’t considering to solve the problem but theydetermine to suicide because of the failure in their life, disheartenment andfacing a hard problem. The suicide is the social problem and I think to promotethe public awareness campaigns for solving the suicide from the InternationalAssociation for Suicide Prevention are a good campaign to reduce the rate ofsuicide. Finally, we should take care of physical and mental health.
