About FAMU Founded in 1887, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public, historically Black university located in Tallahassee, Florida. What distinguishes FAMU from other universities is its legacy of providing access to a high-quality, affordable education with programs and services that guide students toward successfully achieving their dreams. The Social Mobility Index recognized FAMU as a top national university for its commitment to providing pathways for social and economic mobility. CAMPUS LIFE Housing During your first year of college, you will be thrust into a new environment with new people, decisions and responsibilities. University Housing can help you through this transition, as well as better enable you to take full advantage of what the University has to offer. The application deadline for priority housing is June 1. Accommodating 2,300 students, our eight residence halls offer safety, convenience, special programs and camaraderie. All freshmen are required to reside on campus unless their parent or guardian resides within a 35- mile radius of campus. Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) help students create a strong link between their lives in the residence hall and learning experiences in the classroom. Students with similar interests, goals and academic programs are placed together on designated floors for a unique learning experience. The LLC program emphasizes faculty and student engagement, service learning, career-related experiences, leadership development, mentoring, study groups, global education, cultural activities and other programming for student success. FAMU LLCs include education, agriculture, food science, environmental sciences, engineering, science and technology, allied health, business, journalism and honors, with more on the way. 6

Coleman Memorial Library and its branch libraries house nearly one million cataloged volumes, more than 12,000 serial subscriptions, about 192,000 microforms and 76,000 non-print items. Clubs and Organizations At Florida A&M University, there are a number of organizations, clubs and activities that offer lifelong friendships, leadership skills, community engagements and social activities. Center for Disability Access and Resources (CeDAR) The Center for Disability Access and Resources (CeDAR) provides services for registered students who have a documented disability. Students applying to the University as incoming freshmen for the fall semester that have a documented disability may be interested in the Center for Disability Access and Resources (CeDAR) Admissions, Retention and Transition (ART) Program. The CeDAR ART Program, in conjunction with the College Study Skills Institute, is a six-week tuition-based program designed to provide services and support, including taking up to eight hours of college credit, that will benefit the student’s transition to college life. FAMUATHLETICS 5Mascot The Rattler mascot is based on popular folklore. When the school relocated to Highwood Plantation in 1891, the rural landscape had an abundance of snakes, especially rattlesnakes. This is how the mascot name, “The Rattlers,” was chosen. 10

Intercollegiate Athletics As a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), FAMU sponsors 16 NCAA Division I teams for men and women, and participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Varsity sports consist of baseball, basketball, bowling, football, golf, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. 11

OVERVIEW The COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SCIENCES (CAFS) serves as an integral part of the history of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), as the College provides the foundation for the land-grant status. CAFS enjoys a rich educational legacy because of the tripartite land-grant concept that integrates teaching, research and outreach to prepare well-trained graduates for professions in agriculture and food sciences. OVERVIEW The College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (CoPPS) Institute of Public Health began with course offerings at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1949. A legislative enactment in 1951 established the Division of Pharmacy at FAMU and the program evolved from one student to more than 600 today. It is one of the largest colleges of pharmacy in the country and the nation’s top producer of African-American doctorates in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The faculty prepares students for leading roles in the practice of pharmacy, research and public health. The College has developed patents that address the treatment of AIDS, cancer and many other diseases that disproportionately impact African Americans. The simulation lab has a total of six simulation rooms, three control rooms, two skills lab and three debriefing rooms. The simulation suites are designed as hospital rooms and provide real-life simulated experiences for the students in the health professions programs. A variety of simulators are available to students. The simulation lab currently has five adult, two pediatric, three infant, two newborn and one maternal simulator. These simulators allow faculty to present case scenarios to students that incorporate the use of team work, communication, and psychomotor skills. Each simulator is unique and presents different features that can be used when training students on specific skills. The simulation lab is located on the ground floor of the Lewis-Beck Allied Health Building. Through use of this virtual hospital, the School of Allied Health Sciences has future plans to offer health care services to students and citizens of the neighborhood and surrounding areas. OVERVIEW With a vision for active local, national and global engagement, the School of the Environment (SoE) offers several innovative and exciting programs. The School is a multidisciplinary unit that offers a wide range of research and educational programs in environmental sciences and environmental studies and policy to students, governmental agencies, private sector companies, communities and other organizations. SoE’s mission is to provide instruction, conduct research and engage in professional and community service on the local, national and international levels. The School facilitates technology transfer, which results in protection of the environment and the development of remedies for existing environmental problems. A culturally diverse school, SoE is committed to providing unique multicultural experiences for its students while still maintaining its reputation for being a leader in the training of African Americans and others under- represented in the sciences. The School remains the largest producer of Black doctorates in the environmental sciences. FAMU School of the Environment is a part of the Oil Spill Academic Task Force. Through this partnership, SoE provides a breadth of expertise and capabilities, as well as access to key strategic partnerships related to Deepwater Horizon oil spills. The School assists with short- and long-term assessments of oil- associated impacts affecting coastal ecosystems, water quality, public health and coastal communities. 32

OVERVIEW As the first accredited program among the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities, the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) sets the standard in its field. Since its founding in 1982, SJGC consistently has received high marks for the quality of its graduates. SJGC is composed of two divisions—journalism and graphic communication. The Division of Journalism offers instruction in broadcast, print journalism, digital media and public relations. The Division of Graphic Communication offers instruction in graphic design. OVERVIEW The FAMU School of Nursing (SON) is the oldest continuing baccalaureate nursing program in the State of Florida and the oldest continuing baccalaureate nursing program at a historically Black institution in the United States. Established in 1904 as a hospital-based program, it became the first baccalaureate nursing program in Florida in 1936. The nursing program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The School of Nursing is ranked among the top 20 best value nursing programs in the U.S. by BestValueSchools.com. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE PROGRAM The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is a limited- access, upper division major. Admission to the program is competitive. The program provides students with a full scope of professional nursing training and advanced education in specialized clinical practice. The RN-BSN program is specifically designed for registered nurses and provides the flexibility to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. OVERVIEW The School of Graduate Studies and Research is working collaboratively with all academic units to educate and train future leaders, scholars, teachers, researchers and professionals to conduct research and produce knowledge in their working disciplines, especially in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) areas. Our graduates are equipped to solve future state, national and global issues. If you would like to work on new and exciting technology, FAMU’s faculty has the knowledge and expertise to train you. They give students in the STEM areas the freedom to work on solutions to “real world” issues that can change the world. The Graduate Feeder Scholars Program (GFSP) in the School of Graduate Studies and Research is an official partnership agreement arranged by FAMU with more than 40 participating universities located throughout the United States. The GFSP affords FAMU students the opportunity to receive advanced study in graduate programs not available at FAMU. Several of these institutions allocate funding for FAMU students. The mission of the School of Graduate Studies and Research via the Graduate Feeder Scholars Program is to: (1) Promote graduate education, scholarship and research; (2) Equip students with the knowledge and tools to become highly motivated successful professionals; (3) Provide students with a mechanism to pursue graduate study in areas not available at Florida A&M University; and 38 (4) Act as a liaison between the feeder institutions and the students to advocate for a quality graduate experience.
