A gaunt Wolf was almost dead with hunger when he happened to meet a house-Dog who was passing by. หมาป่าผอมกะหร่องตัวหนึ่ง หิวเกือบจะ ตายอยู่แล้ว บังเอิญมันได้พบกับหมาบ้าน ตัวหนึ่งซึ่งกำลังเดินผ่านมา

“Ah, Cousin,” said the dog, I knew it would be, your irregular lift will soon be the ruin of you, why do you not work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly given to you? “ว่าไง, พรรคพวก” หมาบ้านพูด “ข้ารู้ว่ามัน จะเป็นยังไง, ชีวิตที่มันลุ่มๆดอนๆ (ไม่ราบ รื่น) ของแก ไม่ช้ามันจะนำความหายนะมา ให้แกจนได้, ทำไมแกไม่มาทำงานที่มั่นคง เหมือนอย่างข้าละ, แล้วแกก็จะมีอาหารให้ กินเป็นประจำ?”

“I would have no objection,” said the Wolf, “if I could only get a place.” “ข้าคงไม่ปฏิเสธ” หมาป่ากล่าวตอบ “ถ้าข้า หางานอย่างว่านั้นได้”

“I will easily arrange that for you,” said the Dog, “come with me to my master and you shall share my work.” “ข้าจะจัดแจงเรื่องนั้นให้แกได้ไม่ยากนัก หมาบ้านพูด “ตามข้ามาซีไปหานายของข้า แล้วแกจะได้ร่วมทำงานกับข้า”

So the Wolf and the dog went towards the town together. On the way there the Wolf noticed that the hair on certain part of the Dog’s neck was very much worn away, so he asked him how that had come about. ดังนั้น หมาป่าและหมาบ้านจึงเดินมุ่งหน้า เข้าสู่เมืองด้วยกัน ระหว่างทางไปยังเมือง หมาป่าสังเกตเห็นว่า ขนที่บางส่วนรอบคอ ของหมาบ้าน ได้หลุดหายไปเป็นอันมาก, ดังนั้น มันจึงถามหมาบ้านว่าสิ่งนั้นมันเกิด ขึ้นได้อย่างไร

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า (Moral of the story) “ไม่มีอะไรที่คุ้มค่ามากเท่ากับการได้มี เสรีภาพ มีอิสระ” (There is nothing worth so much as liberty.) “คนมีอิสระแม้ต้องอดตายก็ยังดีกว่าตกเป็น ทาสอ้วน” (Better starve free than be a fat slave.)
