Let’s Learn English www.LetsLearnEnglish.co.uk How does Let’s Learn English deal with writing and speaking? Whilst it is possible for the program to automatically mark students’ tests on reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary and receptive pronunciation units, the program cannot mark students’ writing, or listen to their voices and mark them on their accuracy or task fulfilment. We therefore invite members to write compositions and send them in to us. These compositions are marked and sent back to the student, together with feedback on their errors. Similarly, students are invited to record their answers to the tasks assigned to them in the speaking units. The recordings are sent to us and are marked, feedback given and the results sent back to the student. Here are two examples: Writing Writing feedback sheet Dear sir, I am writing to complain about the attitude of your staff working at the Heathrow airport. I am really very disappointed to (in) your country as I am just a visitor to (the) UK. On the day I arrived, your staff searched my luggage. I truly understand the important (importance) of luggage searching after 911, but this should be done carefully to reduce the inconvenience to the user of the airport. How could they break my vase from Hong Kong without apologizing? I really don’t think this is the manner they should have. And I am very angry about this. I really hope that you can have some follow up on this problem by teaching your staff a correct attitude on working and the suitable manner to customers. And I hope that you can pay for the vase which cost $320 Hong Kong dollars. Heathrow is said to be an international airport, every thing (everything) should be done in a smooth and user-friendly way, so I really hope that this won’t happen again. Yours sincerely (faithfully), Clarice Chiu Notes 1. We always use the preposition in with the adjective disappointed. 2. UK, USA etc, always have the before them. 3. Because of the article, we need the noun not the adjective. 4. Everything is one word, not two. 5. We use faithfully when we begin a letter Dear sir or Dear Madam.
