Humpy The Monkey Goes to the Bakery

This is Humpy. Humpy was a good little monkey and always very curious. Humpy lived with his friend Mary Louise in Danville, Kentucky.

Today, Humpy and Mary Louise were walking into town to visit Mr. Burke’s Bakery. They were picking up a cake for the annual Garden Club luncheon.

When Humpy and Mary Louise got to the store, there was a long line of customers waiting to be helped. “Hello!” said Mr. Burke. “I’m sorry the line is long. We are so busy, I haven’t even had a chance to decorate these birthday cupcakes for Little Jane.” “We understand,” said Mary Louise. “Humpy, why don’t you look at the treats in the case while I wait in line for our cake.”

Humpy looked around and saw all sorts of wonderful cakes, cookies, and pastries. He also smelled something delicious. But where was it coming from? Humpy was curious. He followed the smell to the kitchen at back of the bakery…

…and found a room full of delicious sweets! There were chocolate-covered candies, baskets of cookies, and a table full of cupcakes waiting to be frosted. These must be the cupcakes for Little Jane’s birthday party, thought Humpy.

Then Humpy saw a strange green cake. He had never seen a cake quite like this one. What was it? Humpy was curious and leaned forward to touch it. The green cake was cold and jiggled! Humpy was surprised. He jumped back and . . .

CRASH! Humpy knocked into a rack of colorful frosting and sprinkles. Cake decorations flew everywhere, even onto Little Jane’s cupcakes.

“Oh no! What a mess!” cried Mr. Burke as he and Mary Louise rushed into the room. “Now how am I going to decorate Little Jane’s cupcakes?”

Just then, Little Jane walked into the kitchen. “Look at my beautiful and colorful cupcakes!” she exclaimed. “They’re perfect for my rainbow birthday party.”

“Well, Humpy,” said Mr. Burke. “You certainly made a mess! But if you hadn’t, I never would have finished Little Jane’s cupcakes in time for her party. “Would you like to take a gingerbread cookie home with you?” he asked Humpy.

And Humpy did. The end.
