Welcome... At Bebington High School Sports College, we are committed to providing an outstanding education for all our students from the age of 11-18. No school can realise this ambition, however, without working in partnership with parents/carers, the wider community, local businesses and support agencies and we place this collaboration at the heart of the work we do. Education is about providing life chances and here, at Bebington High, we pride ourselves on delivering a range of curriculum opportunities both inside and beyond the classroom. We offer traditional and non-traditional courses augmented by our farm and construction facilities, designed to provide exciting learning pathways that will enable all students to achieve in line with their interests and abilities. Our Sports and PE facilities are some of the best on the Wirral and our extensive holiday clubs ensure that our young people really do engage in lifelong learning. The school is a regional lead for leadership, coaching and volunteering. In the vital area of Health and Wellbeing, we are not only the lead school for the region but the hub of an innovative secondary school network: ‘Healthy Futures,’ working in partnership with the University of Chester, Health Education England (NHS) and 8 founder secondary schools across the North West of England. We have a primary shared aim to improve the Health and Wellbeing, employability skills and life chances of the young people in our care. Specialist Sports College Bebington High Sports College has been a Specialist Sports College since 2001. We have won numerous awards and been recognised by various bodies for the excellent work we do in PE, Sport, Leadership and Health and Wellbeing. These include:- • Merseyside PE Department Of The Year Winners 2016 and 2013 • Youth Sport Trust Outstanding School For Health and Wellbeing 2016 • AFPE Quality Mark with Distinction (2014-2017) – 1st mainstream Secondary School in Merseyside to achieve this. • School Games Gold Award (2015 and 2016) • Youth Sport Trust Gold Partner Status (2015) • Echo Schools Awards Runner Up (Health Category) – 2015 • Youth Sport Trust Health And Wellbeing Lead School • Youth Sport Trust Leadership, Coaching and Volunteering Lead School Our outstanding PE Department deliver high quality PE to support our students to become lifelong participants in sport and physical activity. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum where all students participate in PE for 2 hours each week. In addition to this, there is a vast amount of extra-curricular provision such as, school teams and clubs, active lunchtimes, inter-house competition, gifted and talented provision, Inclusion club, ‘Living for Sport’, our ‘Personal Best’ programme and much more. We also offer academic qualifications such as GCSE PE and BTEC Sport, and students gain consistently outstanding grades. Sports Leadership is at the heart of our PE department. Students start by completing the Young Leaders Award in Year 8 and go right up to the Higher Sports Leaders Award in 6th Form. Students improve their self-esteem, confidence and overall achievement. We have over 100 volunteer Sports Leaders and many have gone onto become paid employees of the School, PE Apprentices in Primary Schools and even professional coaches. As the YST Lead School for Health and Wellbeing we not only focus on physical exercise but also diet, nutrition, hydration, mental and emotional health, and developing employability skills. We have strong links with the NHS and have founded the Healthy Futures Network of schools in partnership with the NHS and The University of Chester called ‘Fit to Succeed’. We use a comprehensive questionnaire to establish our current position a range of Health and Wellbeing challenges at a school and student level and then develop action plans in response to these needs. We have a comprehensive Primary Outreach programme. We deliver high quality teaching in our 9 partner Primary Schools, and also offer them a full audit of provision, development plans, staff training, quality assurance, extra-curricular clubs and competition. We are a community school, with over 3000 people of all abilities ranging from ages 4-84, using our site every week. Our community clubs are not merely hirers, but partners who we engage with to improve and develop to become high performing or accredited clubs. We put our young people and community at the heart of everything we do. We want students to become happy, healthy and successful adults and we aim to equip them with the skills, experiences and education to achieve their full potential. 6 Bebington High Sports College

Additional Needs For many parents, the next step to high school is even more problematic if their child has additional needs. These may include medical issues, learning difficulties, social and communication issues or physical difficulties too. We endeavour to make the process as smooth as possible, as it enables students to adapt and settle into a new environment positively and quickly. There is very close liaison with your child’s school and staff from Bebington High. Specialist Support If your child does have additional needs, as part of our provision, your child could access a number of different levels of support. For students who have a particular learning or physical difficulty, we give carefully targeted support. We ensure that intervention is provided for Literacy, Numeracy, Special Educational Needs. Resourced Provision at Bebington High is designed to meet the needs of students who have an Education Health and Care Plan for Moderate Learning Difficulties. Our Resourced Provision meets the individual needs of students in a small teaching group, whilst providing and supporting access to the wider school community. Access includes supported inclusion in appropriate lessons, during extra-curricular activities and unstructured time within the school day. For students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, we have a designated Student Support Centre providing help, reassurance and guidance, where required. For students with Social and Communication needs, we have a variety of programmes available to support them which are delivered by specialist support staff. Yet, for a number of our students, there are other issues that may impact upon their start to high school. Your child may find change extremely difficult or making new friends is a challenge and they would benefit from some extra support. Another issue could be that your child has significant medical needs and requires careful monitoring or is on medication. The School Curriculum Our school curriculum follows all of the nationally agreed courses to enable the highest academic achievement. The highest ability students will be encouraged to complete courses for the English Baccalaureate but regardless of ability we aim to provide a curriculum that meets the needs and aspirations of ALL our students. Key Stage 3 Our aim at Key Stage 3 (Years 7-8) is to give a sound, broad-based, general education. In many lessons, support teachers are available, to work alongside students in the classroom to provide extra help, and to support those students who are experiencing difficulties. Students are also withdrawn from certain lessons and are provided with individual or small group help, particularly with literacy and numeracy. Our KS3 curriculum provides the foundation for years 9,10 and 11 which is known as KS4. Students will generally be taught in mixed ability groups, although some subjects will be set during the Autumn Term. These include Mathematics and Science. Subjects studied in Year 7 and 8: English Mathematics Science Modern Language (Spanish) Information Technology Design & Technology Geography History Drama Art Music Physical Education (2 Hours High Quality Minimum) PSHE (through Form Tutor time and throughout the curriculum. RE Catering for different needs Some students enter KS3 having made limited progress in KS2, we can amend our curriculum for these students to enable them to have a balance of lessons which provides them extra time in literacy or numeracy development. 8 Bebington High Sports College

Key Stage 4 (Years 9,10,11) In KS4 students follow all these courses listed below, in addition to their options choice: English Language & Information Plus other optional Literature Communications choices of Technology examination course. Mathematics Culture, Philosophy Science and Religious Education Physical Education All students will have the opportunity to study ENGLISH LITERATURE. In addition, three option subjects are selected in Years 10 from a range of GCSE or Vocational Options. There are currently a wide range of optional subjects comprising: Art Information and Sport BTEC Animal Care Communication History Computer Science Technology Geography Construction Music PE Certificate of Personal Food Technology Dance Effectiveness (CoPE) Graphics Drama Health & Social Care Spanish Psychology Horticulture In Key Stage 4, provision will be made for students to be involved in work experience and to establish links with the careers service, industry, commerce and local government. Sex and Religious Education As required by educational law, students will be provided with both sex and religious education. Parents have the right to withdraw their daughter or son from these lessons although we regard them as integral to our programme which prepares students for adult life, and we strongly advise participation. Key Stage 5 – Sixth Form (Years 12 & 13) Students may choose four Advanced Subsidiary Level courses in Year 12. In Year 13, students drop one course and continue to the full A-Level courses in the other three options. Students may combine these courses with vocational level 3 BTEC courses which enable students to achieve the equivalent of A Level qualifications. We also offer Level 2 BTEC courses (equivalent to four GCSEs) that help bridge the gap between GCSEs and A-Levels. Homework The ability to develop skills independently is imperative if a student is to produce performances of a high standard, whether in class, examinations or practical experiences. It is important that as students move through the school, they become more independent learners and homework will aid this development. All subjects will regularly set homework and parents/carers can expect this to become increasingly demanding as the student progresses. Each student has a personal planner in which they are expected to record their homework tasks. The planner forms a simple but effective communication between home and school. All students will have a homework timetable, we expect them to complete at least 1 hour per night in years 7- 9 and up to 2 hours per night in years 10 and 11. www.bebingtonhigh.com Prospectus 2017-2018 9

Caring for your Child Pastoral Support Within our school, we aim to create a harmonious and industrious environment, which supports students in fulfilling their academic potential. The progress, happiness and well-being of our students are of paramount importance to us. Considerable emphasis is placed on the provision of pastoral support. Our students are grouped by age in forms of around 25 young people with up to 8 forms per year group. Pastoral Managers Pastoral Managers are – Mrs Deans (Senior Achievement Manger) Mr Cooper Mrs Ellerington Mrs Hayes (Year 7) Miss Sleeth Mrs Payne The Pastoral Managers for each year group are assigned to manage the pastoral welfare of the students in their year. They are the first point of contact for all issues. Sixth Form is led by – Mr Johns – Director of Sixth Form Mr Ridd – Assistant Head of Sixth Form The school has a comprehensive system of rewards (Class Charts) and sanctions, which help to meet these aims. Every year group has its own Council, with each year electing representatives to the School Council, thus providing students with a voice in school affairs. Our Home School Agreement affirms our commitment to providing a quality education for all of our students. Progress Reports We like to keep parents fully informed about the progress their children are making and the curriculum they are following. We do this in several ways: Reports Students will receive a report termly, which provides information on target grades for the end of the year and current levels of achievement. In the report, students are graded on both attitude to learning and homework. This allows us to provide regular updates on progress. Personal targets are set for development. Parents’ Evening Consultations For every student (Years 7 - 13) at least once per academic year you will have the opportunity to meet your childs’ teachers. These evenings provide an opportunity for parents/carers to come into school and discuss with subject teachers the progress being made by your child. The meeting is to look at the learning and progress of your child and agree actions to allow them to make better progress in the future. The interview will focus on reviewing and setting short term targets, focussing on how your child can develop within the school. 10 Bebington High Sports College

Our School has the longest association with the University of Liverpool. Our Learning Environment We want to provide the best environment in which our students are to be educated. We are lucky to have excellent facilities for all curriculum areas and for the provision of extra-curricular activities. Therefore, we have a varied range of opportunities and learning experiences. We offer all of our students the chance to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities from outdoor educational trips, experiences, sporting tournaments, field courses and university visits. Extra Curricular Activities We are extremely fortunate at Bebington High Sports College that so many staff provide out–of–hours activities for students. An Extended School Bebington High Sports College is an extended school, opening between the hours of 8.00am to 17.00pm and from 18.00pm – 22.00pm Monday to Friday. We are also open from 10.00am until 19.00pm on Saturdays, providing a wide range of activities for young and old. International Links – European Visits Each year, students have the opportunity to travel to a European destination to learn about their culture and life. Students are encouraged to take part in the many activities offered in school, in holidays and within the community. Our students are encouraged to be ‘better than yesterday’ rather than ‘better than the person next to you.’ • Youth connect 5 (YC5) is a programme to support parents and carers from within our school community with knowledge, skills and understanding to enable them and their children to develop resilience and emotional wellbeing. The programme consists of a five-part course that: 1. Builds upon parents/carer’s knowledge, empathy, skills and attributes to promote and strengthen children and young peoples’ resilience and emotional wellbeing. 2. Strengthens parents and carers own levels of resilience. 3. Increases confidence and the ability to explore different ways to support children and improve and enhance the relationships parents/carers have with their children. 4. Ensures parents and carers are familiar with how to access information, support and services. Our first YC5 programme was completed in April 2017. Leadership, Coaching and Volunteering Sports Leadership Pathway at Bebington High Sports College. We are committed to using Sports Leadership as a vehicle for personal improvement and developing life and employability skills. The ability to communicate effectively, plan, evaluate, respond to change, possess strong inter-personal skills and be reliable, can be taken directly from Sports Leadership to any manner of different job opportunities. Our leaders practice, deliver and refine their skills in a wide array of settings. It may start within a task in a lesson and move on to working with younger pupils in our school or partner primary schools, supporting inter/intra school competition and local, regional and even national events and competitions. We are currently working with the NHS on a programme to develop young people who would consider working in the health sector as a viable career path. The piece is around changing perceptions of young people and exposing them to the benefits of working in the system. The NHS is heavily reliant on an imported workforce and we believe we can help reduce this pressure by developing competent, confident young people who would gain real job and career opportunities. The Leadership Pathway Our leadership pathway is designed to help students LEARN through a structured curriculum delivered to all students during their time here, ACHIEVE through opportunities to gain qualifications and complete bespoke courses and VOLUNTEER in the many activities the school leads and participates in within and beyond our own school community. Bebington High Sports College Sixth Form Our Sixth Form Centre has two central aims: we encourage students to achieve academic excellence by providing a rewarding post-16 educational experience. Ours is a Sixth Form where students are considered as mature young adults taking advantage of the opportunity to gain qualifications and experience which will benefit them throughout their lives. Individually tailored timetables ensure that appropriate curriculum choices are made, which encompass Government recommendations for Post 16 education. Careers guidance of the highest calibre and specialist assistance with regard to Further and Higher Education are available at all times. Work experience and community projects are actively encouraged. Our Learning Resource Centre offers a comprehensive information centre, and Sixth Form students also have exclusive access to a fully equipped Sixth Form study area with computer provision and Internet access, which enables them to enhance the quality and production of their work. 18 Bebington High Sports College

Choosing Your New Course The provisional Post 16 curriculum Courses offers courses at various levels (GCSE, A-level, BTEC & vocational). A-Level Courses For the year 2017/2018 these are: All students following A Level courses initially take the AS Sixth Form Courses A-Level Choices qualification at the end of their first year.
