National Events Classic events from around New Zealand MINI DOUBLE HEADER — TAKING ON TE ANAU By Josh Kelly The annual Mini Nationals in May was another casualty of Covid cancelations, but Mini owners were not to be denied. They organised a special event at Labour Weekend for Mini owners to socialise, enjoy their Minis and, more importantly, to support local tourism which has been struggling. The New Zealand Mini Owners put together two events, in Te Anau and Taupo, so both South Island and North Island Mini owners could get in on the fun. Weekend activities started in Te Anau with a get together and barbecue at the event HQ, Aden Motel. On Saturday morning, everyone went for a cruise through the centre of Te Anau before convoying to Manapouri to take part in the Manapouri Classic Car Show. This is organised by the Manapouri Art Group, as part of their annual art show. It is a small, but well-organised show, and a lot of people loved to see all of the Minis lined up — everything from a Mini 1000 to a late-model Countryman and even a twin-engine 4WD Moke! It was then onto The Church Bar and Eatery for a late lunch before a second barbecue at Aden Motel. The previous night’s event had gone so well that everybody wanted to do it again! Sunday was the real highlight of the weekend with the drive to Milford Sound followed by a cruise on the Sound itself. Not long after visiting Mirror Lake, it started to rain heavily, creating thousands of stunning waterfalls. There were regular stops along the way to check out the amazing scenery, and in the Homer Tunnel there was the compulsory horn-tooting! Once at Milford, it was onto the Cruise Milford boat for a cruise, taking one hour and 45 minutes. Rain and swells did not stop most of the Mini owners from heading onto the bow of the boat, which nosed in close to the waterfalls, meaning a few people had a wet trip back to Te Anau and the Olive Tree Café for dinner to finish the official weekend activities. The Olive Tree, The Church, and Aden Motel are all owned by members of NZ Mini Owners, so it was also good to support fellow members. Cruise Milford is also long-time supporter of the Pork Pie Charity Run. Numbers were small due to other events which clashed, but the weekend was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody who attended. 100 NEW ZEALAND CLASSIC CAR

National Events Classic events from around New Zealand THE BATTLE OF BLENHEIM By Steve Reid It was a weekend for the Aussie muscle car fan to relish in Marlborough, as both the GT Falcon Club and the Chrysler R/T Six Pack Owners Club converged on Blenheim at the same time. Twelve Chyrslers made the journey this year, with an equal number of entrants from both islands, including four E49s. Unfortunately, the club was down by two cars, one member missing out with an injury and another suffering from mechanical problems. The weekend kicked off with a meal on Friday night followed by the AGM, which was held at the convention headquarters at the Quality Hotel Marlborough. Saturday morning saw everyone cruise through town on their way to Allan Scott Family Winemakers for a guided tour, wine tasting, and lunch. The drive saw the cars pass through the township of Renwick, where the daring Renwick 50 road race took place annually during the 1950s and ’60s. In the afternoon, everyone visited the world famous Omaka Aviation Heritage centre and the Omaka Car Museum. There they crossed paths with the GT Falcons, which were also doing the same thing at the same time. The weekend wound up on Sunday morning at the Farmers Market, with the cars on display for the public to enjoy and vote for their favourite. The club even picked up a couple of new members, one local turning up in his car which he only takes out three times a year. This year’s convention badge was designed to honour the memory of Gary Bridger, a long-time member who passed away just over a year ago. Gary was an expert on the R/T Charger and co-wrote the book Hey Charger. His family kindly allowed the club to take his much-loved silver E49 to Blenheim to be part of the festivities. Next year, the celebrations will be held in the North Island. It will be the 50th anniversary of this much-loved Aussie Icon. 106 NEW ZEALAND CLASSIC CAR
